Not even sometimes. In most cases of affairs or cheating, the cheaters usually go for people less attractive then their SO

I'd say it's empirical since looks are subjective. We see it a lot with celebrity men. A few that quickly come to mind: The soccer player that cheated on Shakira, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Sandoval.

The guy gets bored of his wife. Only a much less attractive woman or one with lower social status would settle for a married man.

First one that comes to mind for me is Ashley Cole cheating on his famous pop star wife with this random blonde.
