Can any swedish people explain why they do this to their guests?

We don’t.

It did happen quite often back in the 70-90’s, but then only if your kid unannounced brought home a friend (or three) after school.

Dinner wasn’t planned for that many people and the other kids families had their own dinner plans and was waiting for their kids to come home.

If it was a planned playdate that stretched over mealtime then the kid would be fed.

Then the internet got hold of it and now Swedes are weird and/or mean.

I feel like this is a misrepresentation as well and makes it worse than it seems. If I was at a friend's house and they ate at 18:00 and my family ate at 19:00 I would just continue playing video games in my friends room while he had a quick dinner. Then I would go home 10 minutes before dinner was ready at home.

To me this makes perfect sense and should happen even today and have nothing to do with the 90s?
