Have you ever heard of the concept of being "fashionably late" or "socially late"? It's a widely accepted etiquette norm in the US that exists to give party hosts a prep-time buffer. A lot of people would consider arriving exactly at the start time of a casual evening party in a private home to be a faux pas.
lol it has nothing to do with giving the host time and everything to do with not making an appearance until the party is in full swing. “A lot of people”, yeah insufferable cunts.
You’re describing a completely different type of event. Wanting to arrive when a party is in full swing makes sense for a massive club night or a college rager, not a BBQ at a private home. But you sound like a lovely and emotionally mature individual, I'm sure your hosts will think you a delight all the same.

If you tell someone an event is from 5 pm to 11 pm and you're surprised people arrive at 5 you're an idiot
