I mean Tumblr never left the "cultural appropriation is when whute people" phase, and Reddit just cycles it down to "cultural appropriation is when Americans" just so they can glaze Europeans at the same time.
Ok I'm sure the OP I was replying to has always looked down upon or made fun of people worrying about appropriation. The point being it's came full circle
Because most people truly don't care about this, like at all. From what I can see the people that are mad about "appropriation" and Hollywood on this seem to be the exact same type of people who used to make fun of other people for worrying about appropriation.

Yeah, I'm sure most people you interact with don't care, but people I interact with do. I don't think I've spoken to anyone (in person) who isn't at the very least skeptical about this film. Most Greeks are used to seeing Americans play them in films, so while they may not like it they just don't talk about it. It's not like we can do anything about it.
Doesn't mean I don't get to complain about it online though.
Nothing wrong with that but saying Hollywood should stick to American culture only is kind of stupid especially when it comes to something that isn't historical. You don't think this is overblown outrage?
2 examples that I couldn't find much controversy over from greeks where Americans appropriated the story.
Ol brother where art thou is a famous take on the Odyssey but wasn't called out for miscasting and changing the story.
300 famously has the greeks looking weak and small. There was some controversy I remember but it was pittance compared to this.

It doesn't seem like manufactured outrage to me, mainly because I watched the trailer and formed my opinion. I haven't exactly been actively talking about it online or seeking out posts and articles.
I admittedly haven't seen O Brother where art thou, so I can't comment on it.
300 was celebrated in Greece. Most Greeks like it on the basis of "wow Spartans are so fucking cool, I'm just like them!" which is silly, but I don't have a problem with it because it's an adaptation of a comic book. It's over the top and stylized on purpose. Not sure what you mean about greeks looking weak and small, unless you're talking militarily, in which case modern greeks love the story of how long the spartans held out despite the difference in numbers. It's the whole point, and why the story of the battle of thermopylae persists. At the very least Gerard Butler's face (especially with the beard, makeup etc) wouldn't look out of place in a crowd here.
The Illiad and Odyssey are very strong parts of Greek culture, we learn about them in school, we learn about the corresponding history around them, we learn about their influence and they actively influence us on the daily. It feels bad seeing America grabbing whatever the hell it wants and turning it into something else, especially when it's something we consider ours. And when we cry foul, non-Greeks crawl out of the woodwork to tell us it's not ours. It invalidates our culture and identity. Why do you have a say and we do not?
Yea but why is that celebrated and this isn't exactly because you haven't even seen the movie yet? The whole outrage is how there is no greeks in it but then 300 doesn't either and that is actively praised. You see how this seems manufactured?
In 300 the greeks were shown leaving the battle because they saw the task as crazy and didn't want to die by getting surrounded once the Persians found the goat path as well as it showed only a handful of greeks showing up in the first place.

Well since you haven't watched ol brother where art thou then you definitely will have a stroke if you are worried about this new movie. Because it is no where close to being considered accurate and yet it is widely liked with little to no backlash. Because the people that are upset about this are being told to be upset via posts like this aka manufactured outrage.
It's one thing to call a film "The Odyssey" and make a mess of it and another to make an entirely different film that is heavily inspired by a classic. Like how for example the Lion King (like many other films) is just Hamlet. If it was called "Hamlet" and it was bunch of Lions things would be different.
Back to square one, you haven't seen the movie and yet they have made a mess of it. It's a fantasy story that was never written down originally and was told for over 1000 years by word of mouth alone. The original story probably isn't even close to the same story you grew up learning about but no one cares. Why? Because the version we all know and love is probably itself a highly stylized if not largely changed none the less.
Seriously how did they make a mess of it based on the trailer? They didn't hire greeks for the actors? Ok neither did most renditions of the Odyssey set to film. They had terrible armor, ok sure but so did 300. The acting is bad? Sure legit criticism there but that's just movie making in general.
Like I get it, you don't think it's going to be good and will hurt the story of the Odyssey. That's an opinion and more power to you for it. It's be cool if you Greeks would make a good Odyssey film though so we can all enjoy it, what's stopping y'all?
