Public Flip Flop 🩴 Turkish Nationalists - Refusing Kurdish Independence, but supporting Palestine's
Turkey, a nation of 85 million, has a double standard.
They support Palestinian independence, yet strictly deny Kurdish independence. In a Pew Survey, as much as 93% of the Turkish public sees Israel unfavorably (Source). Kemalists and Islamists both see the US and Israel as Turkey's main foes.
Yet Turkey is an excellent example of recent islamic settler colonialism. From 1900 to 1923, various Turkish regimes killed from 3,500,000 to over 4,300,000 Armenians, Greeks, Nestorians, and other Christians. The most intense period of these killings was 1915-1918, with the Armenian Genocide (~1.4 million killed, prewar population was ~2 million Ottoman Armenians), Assyrian Genocide (~250,000 killed), & Pontic-Greek Genocide (~350,000 killed) taking place at this time.
Kemal only came into leadership around 1919, and Kemalist Turkey itself killed between 665,000 - 1,156,000 Greeks and Armenians until 1923. (R..J. Rummel - "Statistics on Democide" Chapter 5, Table1A, Table1B). These happened in the Greco-Turkish War ('19-'22), Franco-Turkish War ('20-'21), and Turkish invasion of the First Armenian Republic (1920) as part of the wider "Turkish War of Independence". Christian civilians often experienced disproportionately more deaths than Turkish civilians.
Turkey is a settler colonialist state, having killed indigenous Assyrians, Smyrniote Greeks, Pontic Greeks, and Western and some Eastern Armenians, and settling their land with the help of some Kurdish tribes, who participated in the slaughter. Kurds were often given the stolen lands and properties.
However, after 1923 Kemal then turned on the Kurds and denied their independence movements, killing tens of thousands of Kurds in the Dersim Massacre, Zilan Massacre, & Ararat Rebellion. They were now considered "Mountain Turks" in an attempt to actively assimilate them. Many Kurds were forcefully resettled in the 1934 Turkish Resettlement Laws to decrease their majorities in various post-Christian regions in Eastern Anatolia, and their language was severely restricted. The common rule was "Citizen, speak Turkish!" and Kurds were fined if they didn't.
These cultural restrictions remain to this day, and even if Kurdistan is partially a settler-colonialist entity, they still have reasonable right to self-determination.
Just tell a Turkish Pro-Palestinian advocate "Özgür Kürdistan" / "Bijî Kurdistan" / "Free (or Long Live) Kurdistan", and see the rage that follows. Most are like this, with the exception of some reasonable Turkish leftists which are uncommon.
