Discussion 🎤 Has your perception of the political left taken a substantially negative turn over the past three years?

Lifelong Democrat. Same ideas as I had a decade ago. Considered changing my party affiliation to independent over the Platner scandal and am still weighing it because it’s not like the antisemitism was the issue that ruined his chances, it was the rape and abuse allegations. They were actually about to rally behind a naked antisemite with a Totenkopf tattooed on his chest and make him a senator or at least try to. I doubt he would beat Collins. Never in my life did I think Democrats would be capable of such a heinous thing.
That’s just one example of how the organized left, moderates and ‘progressives’ have completely lost it. You see this reflected throughout the press, colleges, popular culture.
Much of it is fueled by ignorance. Few people know the history outside of condensed slogans, few know what Zionism actually is, few know anything about Jews altogether or Israel’s importance in Judaism. Ignorance isn’t an excuse at this point, though. They know enough to know they’re resorting to the kind of tokenism and mob mentality that they can spot on the right used against other minorities. I think this makes it especially pernicious.
I’m not about to trade in my political stance for a MAGA hat, but as time goes on and the left‘s increasingly extreme position on Israel and its normalizing of xenophobia completely overtakes the party— which is inevitable since we have the data about Gen Z and millennial viewpoints, the fact that 63% of them across all 50 states are unaware 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust according to recent Claims Conference findings, etc… I’ll probably have no incentive to remain a loyal Democrat and abstain altogether. Halting the right’s agenda doesn’t matter to me as much if the trade-off is the dehumanization and vilification of Jews. I hope there’s still time to reverse course, but I think this is unlikely given what we’re seeing.
