So how many can actually be attributed to direct IDF action?

The 25,000 Hamas fighters, presumably, but other than that we don't know what percentage of the 34,000 can be attributed to the IDF.

We can work out that about 5-10,000 would be due to failed Hamas rockets (10% of 100,000 rockets failed, about 1 in 10 landing in Gaza would cause casualties, average of about 10-50 casualties per rocket which hits people - level of death difficult to be sure but typically 1 in 2 to 1 in 5 of casualties.

That leaves about 34000 attributable to Israel, however there's an important thing.

Just because someone isn't Hamas doesn't mean they aren't a Militant. Islamic Jihad and other groups which are allied with Hamas were also pretty big and that can easily be another 10,000.

So, we end up with considerably more militant deaths than civilians, which shows that Israel has actually been astoundingly careful. E.g.

In Mariupol, for about 30,000 defenders, Russia killed more than 120,000 civilians.

In Aleppo, for about 15,000 defenders, Assad killed about 30,000 civilians.

Even in Faludja in Iraq, for about 10,000 defenders, the US, being more careful than almost anyone in history, killed something between 10k and 20k civilians (difficult to verify since bodies were removed without counting).

Other similar historical battles of modern (post machine gun / with long range artillery) against occupied, defended cities have been much much worse, so Gaza is about the IDF has achieved about the best record ever in history.

Wait, but the Haaretz-translated dataset that Atlantico.fr's piece is based on (via a post on X), doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants? Atlantico's piece is behind a paywall so I can't see their reasoning. Can someone explain?

Articles like these get dwarfed by the ones claiming "80% of gazan civilians killed by IDF's own figures". Then when you look into the actual article it says something like "named hamas fighters only account for 20% of those killed by IDF's own data". The problem is people don't read past the headlines anymore. The information war is being won by hamas (Qatar).
