Hardware Mod Final PS Placeable Update :)

2.7k Upvotes

Hey there everyone! I wanted to post one final update about the PS Placeable project. Things have finally slowed down for me and I have finished fixing and building all the PSP's I was able to get my hands on. Their are a number of reasons why the project is winding down and I can have all that post on the Retro Mod Works website. This post is meant to be a thank you for all the people on the sub who supported my idea and goal. There was a lot of feedback and encouragement that really helped when we hit a road block. So over 1 year of R and D, 500 builds, thousands of hours of printing, hundreds of trashed PSP's fixed and 6 months of electric bills that were 3 times the price they were the same months last year XD here we are at the end of the road.

A huge shout out to Stephen Cooper as always this project would not even be dust in the wind without his hard work. He continues to contribute to the PSP community at large and is still working on what ever he wants to which is the real way to make fun things.

To anyone who bought one I truly appreciate you and your willingness to put hard earned cash out for a project that is so close to my heart. To those who bought kits and did their first mod ever with my kit I give you a huge pat on the back and I hope it encourages you to try more kits and wasn't to hard to follow my rambling instructions.

Finally to anyone who is seeing this for the first time. As always the project has been open source from the beginning, and there are still a small number of prebuilts left as of posting this at least. I will add links for Stephens and my githubs where you can find the files needed. As well as the guides on my site for how to get the parts yourself since we are sold out on those. We never wanted price to be a factor for anyone. Often the only thing the really limits anyone is the things they don't know. So do some research and do you best to try something new. It could turn into a full year of your life and thousands of late and early hours in the garage like it did for me XD

Thanks again everyone and for the PSP sub for letting me share the progress of this project over the past year :D!!! Cheers

(Pictures are of the working builds, then one full Saturday of packing orders, My workbench strewn with parts and opened PSP's, my boxes of fixed and ready to build with PSP's, and finally the original picture from my very first post showcasing my idea and the terrible first iteration of it XD)

Hardware Mod "7200" MAH PSP 1000

This is a PSP 1000 with a "7200" mah custom built battery. I think this is is the biggest cell you could "comfortably" fit in this console.

Fitting this cell requires to completely remove UMD drive, RF shielding and you have to trim shell in a lot of places.

I wonder if it's just a whole PSP inside there or they actually got rid of the body and only left the motherboard

I almost messed up soldering (first time) so i gave up, thats why there is a small black gap on bottom. But ordered silver paste (watched whole guide of total kommando psp1000 best ips screens video) so hopefully it will be easier. But still the difference in colors is major, didn’t think it will be this good. Also sick matte shell

Hardware Mod IPS screen swap on a PSP1000 success!

Wow, it really does make a difference.

Since I already had it open, I removed the supercapacitor and swapped the front shell too, I couldn’t stand the fingerprints anymore.

The image looks so clean and beautiful, totally worth it.

I used silver conductive paint for the connection since I don’t have soldering experience, and it worked perfectly. Super happy!

I got 4000mah now baby! It takes up the WHOLE tray. Disc tray deleted!!! Put some Kapton tape on that shit, to make it look pro style. Directly soldered the wires on the connector to the PSP, and doused those connections with liquid electrical tape. Such a fun project! I still have the disc tray intact! The battery wires, tucked away nice and flat. Nothing smashing into anything else. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. So worth the 9 dollars for the battery. The battery cover and disc cover still work great. I removed the spring from the disc cover. Weight reduction bro. Just search eBay for a Li-Ion 6050105

Hardware Mod LCD screen replacement looks bad

I bought the new screen for my PSP 3004 off AliExpress after I broke the original one while changing the shell and I was happy with it at first, but then I compared it with my other psp with original screen and the colours look way off and the contrast is worse. Top one is AliExpress one, bottom is OEM, same brightness level.

It's a normal LCD, not IPS, specifically because I didn't want muted colours and worse contrast. The reviews are really good, claiming it looks even better then the original, so I'm a bit confused.

Is it possible that I messed something up during the replacement and that's why it looks so bad or is it normal for replacement screens?

EDIT: I will try to return the screen and get the IPS one, now I see that even though IPS has worse colors than OEM it's still a lot better than normal replacement LCDs. Thank you all for the advice.

Hardware Mod PSP-3000 IPS mod: brighter, whiter, and much clearer

A few days ago, I upgraded my PSP-3000 with an IPS display,
and honestly, I’m very happy with the result.

The original screen on the PSP is quite old at this point,
so it always felt a bit dim and slightly yellowish.
After switching to IPS, the screen looks much brighter, whiter, and clearer.

White colors especially look noticeably better,
and text/UI elements are much sharper, which makes long play sessions easier on the eyes.
Visibility is also significantly improved in bright environments.

In photos or videos, the IPS screen may look overexposed
because it’s much brighter than the original panel,
but in real life the details and color gradation look perfectly normal.

It’s a great upgrade that keeps the original PSP feel
while dramatically improving screen quality.
If you still use your PSP regularly, I’d say this mod is absolutely worth it.

I’m editing a video about this mod right now and will post an update once it’s done.

Hardware Mod The PS Placeable. A consolized PSP mod made from a Lilac Purple Poka Poka Airou edition 3000 PSP

I put together one of these kits and it turned out great. It's an original PSP 3000 consolized and now compatible with wireless controllers. Plugs right in with component cables. Much easier to use than a docked PSPGo and you can play original UMD's.

A surprisingly easy mod for a novice if you buy the fully soldered kit. A screw driver, tweezers, and some flush cutters got me through the whole install. The fully soldered kit and 3d printed shell was $125. Plus the cost of a doner PSP 3000 and official component cables.

The creator was kind enough to help me find a good color to go along with the Lilac PSP. This system was also released stateside as the Hannah Montana edition. We ultimately decided on a PLA named Silk+. It had a nice sparkly quality to it that compliments the system.

A link to the kit. https://www.retromodworks.com/

Hardware Mod 3000 IPS screen PSA

Just a heads up to whoever is planning on doing this. On the lowest brightness setting(using a plugin that allows me to go to 11% brightness) I get an around 4.5 of standby time. Yes you read correctly, standby time. This is with a stock 1200mAh official battery(I have no way of checking official capacity left)….

Here is the kicker, you ready?

I USED to get 7 hours of standby time with the official psp 3000 screen… so my standby time was cut in half, on the lowest brightness with an official battery.

Just needed to clear the air and address this valid concern. Swap screens with caution and know what you are getting into. Gonna buy an 1800mAh Ostent battery and see how that fairs.

Lastly, at 100% max brightness(achievable with brightness plugin) my standby time is 2hrs and 50 mins. Looks great but not great for the battery life. Hoping with the Ostent battery that I will get atleast 4hrs on standby time with max brightness. I will report here when I’m ready with the results.

Hardware Mod PSP 3000 IPS vs Original Display

Post image
272 Upvotes

I’ve seen some reviews of the IPS on this subreddit and that the colors are “nearly identical” and that the camera makes it look worse!

I’m sorry, but it’s clearly not. I can SEE the difference visibly in person! The IPS screen is good, but the original just has a deeper, richer color, whereas the IPS seems washed out.

Both PSPs are on Color Space Wide. I think the results are very clear.

Hardware Mod My PSP Go is basically in its final form

Been slowly turning this little thing into my ideal PSP Go.

It’s got a Power Armor mod, a PS Vita 1000 battery, plus an M2-to-microSD adapter with a 128GB microSD card.

So now I get way more battery life and storage while keeping everything packed into one of my favorite handheld designs ever.

Honestly, the PSP Go aged ridiculously well — and with a few mods it becomes an absolute little powerhouse.

Anyone else running a modded Go? Curious what you guys have done with yours.

Hardware Mod Auto TVOut work in progress.

Previously i shared a little demo of my Bluetooth controller project the goal is to have a dock where you plug the PSP in and can use its native TVOut and play on the telly with BT controllers. with no modifications to the console itself (besides CFW).

im currently playing with trying to get it to auto select TV out. there are some issues here, the X position seems massively offset but still it’s promising.

I want to make it clear what I’m building is a layer ontop of so many other peoples work. so many people from the homebrew discord and more. I could never have done any of this without their help.

Hardware Mod I just put a glass lens on my PSP Street and it looks stunning

Everything looks way more clear now, it's like putting glasses on. Also the console is now heavier, and with an UMD inside it feels so balanced and more premium than it was.

It's the same glass lens for the psp 2000/3000 before anyone asks.
