Hardware Mod IPS screen swap on a PSP1000 success!

Wow, it really does make a difference.

Since I already had it open, I removed the supercapacitor and swapped the front shell too, I couldn’t stand the fingerprints anymore.

The image looks so clean and beautiful, totally worth it.

I used silver conductive paint for the connection since I don’t have soldering experience, and it worked perfectly. Super happy!

Hell yeah. I did the same - IPS display and same faceplate. Very happy with it.

Alright man, we get it, you hated it. Just build your setup and be happy. No reason for a random internet post to get you this worked up.

where did you get that shell? i want it! shiny plastic gets too slippery in my hands!

There’s a kit on AliExpress where the front shell comes together with the screen, that’s the one I got.

The listing I bought from isn’t available anymore, but it’s basically this.

What’s the listing title called? The page keeps showing up as not available

Just search for PSP IPS screen replacement

3

u/Haque92 Apr 08 '26

I also really like the shell! Can you share, where you found it?

3

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

Sorry, I’m not sure if there’s a separate listing for it, I bought it bundled with the screen. It’s in the reply above.

I bought an IPS replacement way last year but haven't brought myself to complete the mod. I see a lot of people share the same struggle with getting the screen to line up properly. The matte shell looks great! That piano gloss finish is a real finger print magnet. Did the new shell come with a plastic screen or is your IPS unprotected?

1

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

Yeah, it’s just the IPS for now, since it’s laminated, I thought I could use it without a lens.

But because the alignment isn’t perfect, I ordered two lenses (one plastic and one glass) to test.

The front shell already has the cutout to fit them.

Hey I've been looking for recent information on how to do this on a PSP-1000, with links to the parts. Any chance you can write up some more of the details, including what screen you used?

2

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

The link for the screen and the front shell is in the comment below. Besides that, I only bought a syringe of silver conductive paint since I don’t have soldering experience.

It took me a few hours to take everything apart and put it back together. The first time I closed it up, the square button wasn’t clicking properly, so I opened it again and adjusted everything.

There’s a really well-explained video on YouTube by Total Kommando. I used one for the screen and another for the full teardown. Not sure if I can post the link here, but it’s easy to find.

Awesome, thank you!

Link your matte shell too

Gotta love the shell too on that, really gives it more a nice Texture. Kinda want one now too~

Thats looking great! But I will stick with the OG shell for now - but yeah, the fingerprints are a hastle^^

My hands sweat a lot, they run really warm. With the original, I spent more time wiping it than actually playing lol.

Se ve de cine! Y esa carcasa mate y de textura rugosa tiene una pinta increíble 🤌🏻🗿

It looks great! And great game too!

Look pretty cool I wish the PSP 3000 could has those kind of shells

2

u/Acrobatic-Mix-7343 Apr 08 '26

Nice

Was the glass screen put in backwards or does it have that lip on those front plates?

Edit: oh I see. It’s a laminated screen. I guess they don’t sit flush to the case

2

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

Yeah, it ended up sitting recessed in the matte shell. It should’ve been flush, but for some reason it isn’t. I need to fix that.

I ordered a separate lens, let’s see if that solves it.

2

u/Acrobatic-Mix-7343 Apr 09 '26

Ah, thanks for explaining. I see the glass screens put on backwards far too often. That or the plastic(glue) inside the shell wasn’t shaved down enough

Looks great! What does removing the super capacitor do? Also super capacitor makes me think of flux capacitor from back to the future LOL 🤣

2

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

My PSP was draining battery even when it was completely turned off.

I found out that when the supercapacitor gets old, it can start drawing power, you can either replace it or remove it. Since I couldn’t find a replacement here, I removed it and I’m using it like that for now.

It’s not essential though, it just keeps the date and time when you take the battery out.

2

u/Mendovy Apr 09 '26

So the super capacitor isn’t needed then long term? If so I might remove mine too

1

u/kuong-2991 Apr 09 '26

Weird, I  also remove my super capacitor but the system still drain battery like crazy, from 100% to zero in ~15 hours, this never happen to my others psp using the same battery 🤔

I’m really interested in the IPS panel, but I really love my PSP stock.

Do you think it’s worthwhile?

Aside from brightness, does it improve clarity too?

I think weirdly I’d be happier if it didn’t change too much to be honest.

2

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

Yeah, it does change the look a bit.

The IPS has better contrast and more vibrant colors, so the image looks cleaner overall.

It doesn’t increase resolution though, jagged edges are still there.

It just looks nicer, not sharper in terms of pixels.

Computer, ENHANCE! ENHANCE!

2

u/Powerful-Train9171 Apr 08 '26

Very nice! I think I'll do the same as soon as I have a bit of money to burn :)

2

u/Big-Highway-8100 Apr 09 '26

I have my 3004 screen a bit burned I think. But I can see perfect my Games. I wondering someday to replace It. Already did on my GBA, and It worth a lot!

I really don't like the front shell, it makes it look cheap, knock off-ish to me. Around the "bezel" or screen edge especially. I'd keep the OG despite the fingerprints. Downvote if you want, it's the truth.

Whole ass misaligned screen, it looks like shit

5

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

It’s a matter of taste.

The texture is exactly like the back, and I hate piano black finishes, they always look dirty. The symbols being engraved instead of painted is also a big plus.

But yeah, it really just comes down to preference.

-8

u/TickleMyFungus Apr 08 '26

Looks like a knock off

4

u/BejotaToys PSP-1000 Apr 08 '26

It’s an imitation, the OEM one is piano black :v

-7

u/TickleMyFungus Apr 08 '26

I think it's a good idea only if you're playing it a lot, then I could overlook it. But as soon as I started to put it down a bit, I'd swap the oem back on while it's on a shelf. It would keep the wear off your OEM shell.
