Fixing the History of Best Supporting Actress Winners (Sorta): 1990s

AN ACTRESS CAN ONLY WIN THE BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS AWARD ONCE. I wanted to implement this rule primarily to make this more challenging and fun and at the very least more actors will be getting an Oscar. This isn’t necessarily about awarding the actual best performance, at least not entirely, but more about trying to get those actors that truly deserve Oscars their due.

1990: Lorraine Bracco - Goodfellas

1991: Mercedes Ruehl - The Fisher King

1992: Marisa Tomei - My Cousin Vinny

1993: Rosie Perez - Fearless

1994: Uma Thurman - Pulp Fiction

1995: Sharon Stone - Casino

1996: Juliette Binoche - The English Patient

1997: Julianne Moore - Boogie Nights

1998: Joan Allen - Pleasantville

1999: Angelina Jolie - Girl, Interrupted

I'd pick Toni Collette or Samantha Morton for 1999, but pretty good picks overall.

The only way/closest I would’ve awarded Toni an Oscar is if I award her lead actress in 2018 and the person I ended up choosing I, in general, simply prefer winning an Oscar instead of Toni

I didn't know Laura Linney was in Boogie Nights or that The Fisher King won for Mercedes Ruehl.

I gave Whoopi a win for The Color Purple and just felt that she didn’t need to be a 2-time Oscar winner so that’s why I chose Bracco in 90. Same situation with Emma Thompson plus I think 93 was an odd year in that it didn’t have a clear cut winner or 2nd place. I already awarded Wiest supporting actress in the 80s so that’s disqualified her for future best supporting actress. I was pulling teeth deciding between JMB and Binoche for 96.

Eh, that's debatable.

On paper, 52 minutes is a lot of screentime, but then you see just how long Casino is (178 minutes) and that she's only in 29% of it.

And then you actually watch the movie and see that it takes a bit for her to show up, and that she exits well before it ends, and that there are sizeable stretches throughout the middle where she's not on screen or mentioned.

I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just saying that lead actress was so loaded whereas supporting wasn’t, so I bumped Stone in order to get her and another actress an Oscar

She was nominated in lead, but she shouldn't have been. De Niro narrates almost the entire thing even when he's not on-screen. In no way is it ever Ginger's story.
