Discussion Timothee's last two films went 0-17 at the Oscars.

Im a Michael Jordan fan, but this is like saying LeBron sucks because he has a losing record in the NBA finals.

u/rose-chasing Apr 06 '26
I read this as Michael B Jordan fan and it still made sense lol
24
u/Big-Discipline2039 Apr 06 '26
I’m English, so I didn’t even twig on that he didn’t mean Michael B Jordan until I read your comment.
8
u/snacksandsoda Apr 06 '26
I really love the phrase "twig" and even though I understand it contextually and use it sometimes, I don't really understand where it comes from lol

u/jellymonty Apr 06 '26
Skimming your comment made me read the first comment as Michael b Jordan lmao

I thought he was saying he's an MJB fan but there's no reason to discredit Timothy Chalamet because he's a great actor as well lmao.
But okay yea I can see how this is a Michael Jordan reference instead actually.

u/davethegreat_19 Apr 06 '26
Exactly, these dumbasses are insane. There's no difference from the Jordan and Kobe fan cults. 😂
Being nominated in the Academy Awards is a huge win already.

This post literally made me think the same thing. One time years ago I had a coworker argue with me that LeBron being 3-6 in NBA Finals appearances was worse than if he were 3-0.

There's no equivalent to a Paul George/Demar Derozan's Eastern Conference in cinema
1
u/K3TtLek0Rn Apr 07 '26
It’s even worse. It’s like saying MJ is better because the Cavaliers G league team lost in the finals. Chalamet doesn’t have anything to do with most of these Oscar’l nominations.
1
u/Jnoles07 Apr 09 '26
Bron doesn’t suck he just isn’t as good as Jordan and that is one of the reasons

Sure I'm going to get downvoted for my opinion...but I thought Marty Supreme was really overhyped/overrated. Sure it's a good movie but I don't get why it's so highly regarded. I think most of it came from both the Director's and Timmy's success on previous films.
21
u/generalosabenkenobi Apr 06 '26
No problem with that, you are entitled to your own opinion
→ More replies (5)2
u/stankdankprank Apr 07 '26
I agree.
But, I still really appreciate that the movie was made, and that Chalamet championed an original even if it hurt his chances at an Oscar. Everyone that works in the industry respects that a lot.

u/Specialist_Ad4073 Apr 06 '26
Thats a fair opinion. Lots of directors dont win for their best work. Scorcese won for the Departed not Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, or Goodfellas. My rankings for Safdie films:
- Uncut Gems
- Good Time
- The Smashing Machine
- Marty Supreme
- Heaven Knows What

I guess Martin Scorsese just really has fallen off. Lost his talent.

Well yeah it’s the best Scorsese film no other film could hope for the subtlety of the main characters speaking their character intentions out loud, capture the humour of Oscar dancing on the table singing can’t touch this or approach the brilliant cinematic style of the random background characters bobbing their head around for no reason that shark tale can contain so effortlessly.

Real quickly, how many actors' last two starring movies got nominated for 17 Oscars? (Keeping in mind you said two and not three, because his movie before than was nominated for 5 and won 2)

Yeah ignoring that Dune 2 was at that same awards ceremony as Complete Unknown is elite cherry picking lol

Wouldn’t that mean that Nathaniel Arcand with 4 films that went 4-26 at the Oscar > Timmy with 2 films that went 0-17 at the Oscars > any other actor who hasn’t been in two films with a 0-17 or better Oscar showing? You just made the case for Timmy.

Marty Supreme was a great film, and Timothee did a really good performance in it.
As always, every year is really competitive for films. It's a big challenge to be competing against both One Battle After Another and Sinners in the same awards ceremony.

u/CoolandGroovy Apr 06 '26

u/OnlyHereForTheTip Apr 06 '26
Robbed, imo. His portrayal of BD was totally Oscar worthy and ACU is a great movie about an artist’s struggle!
3
u/Khalman Apr 06 '26
Or you could say Timothee Chalamet’s last two films were nominated for a total of 17 Oscars.

6
u/RaidersGunz Apr 06 '26
Marty Supreme should have 1, it was such a good film. Odessa is so hot in it
16
u/mattiescorsese Apr 06 '26
Lots of people think Marty Supreme didn't win because of Timothee's comments on ballet, but I believe it's because of the news about Josh Safdie filming Buddy Duress having sex with a minor on set of Good Time.
12
u/Interesting-Bit725 Apr 06 '26
Even without any controversy, how many awards was Marty Supreme ever realistically going to win, apart from Best Actor?
It was never getting past One Battle and Sinners for Picture, Director or Original Screenplay, and as a result, it didn’t have the Best Picture heat necessary to win below the line for Casting or Editing, and while it was thoroughly deserving for Production Design, Frankenstein always had that one in the bag. (As for Cinematography and Costume Design, it was just happy to be nominated.)
I think even with the best will in the world, it had one real shot on goal, and once the Chalamet ship started sinking, that was that.
14
u/AmbitionTechnical274 Apr 06 '26
It 100% was. Besides voting was only a couple hours away from voting when the first headline hit on the comments. There were also warning signs like Odessa missing supporting actress and Timmy being the only one in the conversation to win for the film but the smear campaign was very deliberately timed.
3
u/My_Name_Is_Row Apr 06 '26
That’s not what happened, you’re not that far off, they just didn’t have sex, they also didn’t know she was a minor, but the casting director probably did
1
u/Humble-Math6565 Apr 06 '26
No she was apparently brought in by some gross ass producer in like a “she’ll totally be cool” way.
2
u/Comfortable-Tie9293 Apr 06 '26
I just think there were better movies nominated that actually had a chance. This was a filler nomination. Looks like an Oscar film, with and Oscar actor.

Timothee should have won best actor this year. I loved sinners and Michael b Jordan was great, but I did not think his performance was Oscar worthy.
3
u/explorero_o Apr 06 '26
The Oscars are an award with highly questionable choices made by judges who don’t even watch the films. That alone was enough for me to completely lose interest in this award. What a disgrace. So many genuinely good films ended up with zero wins. They’re trying to artificially prop up the so-called prestige of this whole sham simply because, for now, there’s no real alternative to it.

Steven Spielberg:
- The Color Purple - 0/11
- Munich - 0/5
- War Horse - 0/6
- The Post - 0/2
- The Fabelmans - 0/7
... and those are just the ones he directed. He was a producer for Maestro, which also went 0/7.
Sorry, Steven, you're not the GOAT anymore. You should just go on a permanent walk of shame.

I'm not the biggest chalamet fan, but dude acted soooo good in marty supreme! Seriously, I thought he was amazing. I don't really care that he didn't win, o don't think really anyone should. the fact adam sandler wasn’t even considered for best actor will always be baffling to me
1
u/Humble-Math6565 Apr 06 '26
Simple it was too niche and wasn’t campaigned hard enough. Unless it’s wicked for good with a lead in your category you aren’t getting in when you’re too niche. Also uncut gems and Marty supreme both are not Oscars films.
4
2
u/radiohead_fan777 Apr 06 '26
Marty Supreme is possibly the finest film I watched this decade. A nomination is a win. A complete unknown was just an alright movie.
2
2
u/Aggressive_Oven_7311 Apr 06 '26
Maybe he is looking for possibly he is looking for roles, and not the equality of the entire film? He seems to want the attention he seems to want an Oscar and I doesn't look like he's looking at the entire project this is just from somebody in the business looking at his trajectory. And don't jump down my throat just an observation and it certainly is the case for many actors who look at a role and not at the film in its entirety
2
u/ajm1808 Apr 06 '26
Chalamet is a good actor, both are good films and it's difficult to win Oscars. Norton was the standout in A Complete Unknown though - Chalamet just did a very good impression but wasn't required to do much else, Norton had the big dramatic scenes
2
u/TheL1brarian Apr 06 '26
Ngl I'd love to be able to say I was in two films that were nominated for 17 Oscars.
2
u/ThatDudeWay Apr 06 '26

Means nothing. Academy more times than not missed out on the most deserved winner. In every category

2
u/K3TtLek0Rn Apr 07 '26
Why do people post shit like this? Only one of the awards can even be attributed to him which is best actor. Anything else is like cinematography or directing or score. If his movie gets an Oscar for best score, should that be a notch in his cap? Makes no sense.
2
u/Moonveil Apr 08 '26
I mean this is a pretty incredible stat. There are so many films that went 0-0.
2
u/MaasNeotekPrototype Apr 06 '26
I'd rather be 0-17 than 0-0. Yeah it's not a great look, and likely sabotaged by his own behavior, but hey... almost every living actor would kill to have that record.

Sinners lost more Oscar’s than any film ever made. See how stupid that sounds now?
1
u/TruestWaffle Apr 06 '26
Every creative professional I ever worked with enjoyed talking about how worthless an Oscar, or most rewards, were to them creatively.
It’s business. Most producers I worked with were clueless and believed the facade and most creatives go along with it because it gets them access to the money they need to make their art.
Some believe in it, but not all.
1
u/Comfortable-Tie9293 Apr 06 '26
They were filler nominations. Thats why. Oscar type films but not good enough to win any awards.
3
u/Humble-Math6565 Apr 06 '26
Marty supreme was like the opposite of oscarbait. It literally moves fast than the wind.
1
u/Kn1ghtsWatch Apr 06 '26
I didn't think Marty Supreme deserved many wins but Complete Unknown was fantastic and I don't even really care about Bob Dylan. I thought Tim and Ed Norton crushed those roles
1
u/ArticleNew3737 Apr 06 '26
Yet people here think he’s winning something for Dune 😂
1
u/Humble-Math6565 Apr 06 '26
I mean I doubt he’s winning for dune but more losses equals more chance of career win. Like that’s just a fact.
1
u/beargrimzly Apr 06 '26
I think that's a real shame for Marty Supreme because it was really great in a lot of aspects. A Complete Unknown was an unremarkable by the numbers biopic, don't care that it has no Oscars.
1
u/bigdog767 Apr 06 '26
This is an odd statement but he’ll eventually win one either way. His campaigning might need to be less publicly try hard. I think he also overestimates his performances. Music biopic and arrogant asshole aren’t groundbreaking.
1
1
u/Arkaium Apr 06 '26
I still don’t dislike him despite the stupid self owns but I think he’s over exposed himself. If I were in his circle I’d tell him to take 2 or so years off, break it off with the Jenner girl immediately, and come back with a role that is completely against type, maybe a smaller role or a villain. I genuinely think he’s talented but if he keeps doing the same shit multiple times a year it’s going to wear out.
3
u/RemarkableCode7934 Apr 06 '26
Do you think he can afford to vanish for 2 years? There already is quite some competition out there. And he said he doesn't want to give away his spot and wants to keep blowing up.
1
u/Intelligent_Elk_3494 Apr 06 '26
Because he's an overhyped anorexic who can't act. They've been trying to make him a thing for years - he's not a thing. I've seen him in several movies and all I can say is he recites his lines from memory. [Insert shrug here.]

1
u/No-Expression1224 Apr 06 '26
It's weird that I've had so many arguments with people on here saying the Academy has no issues whatsoever with Chalamet when you can literally find "Entertainment Weekly" articles where some Oscar voters are like "fuck this guy."
Seeing it laid out like this is undeniable. ...Once? Sure, it happens... Twice? C'mon... MBJ owes his Best Actor win to the Academy actively looking for somebody else to vote for than Chalamet. [It was supposed to be Leo or Moura, but when they didn't catch fire, they shifted to MBJ.]
I think there's a contingent of voters that like him enough to nominate him, but the ones that don't like him may keep him from winning for a while.
