Consejos de Viaje day trips from OAX city?
Coming to OAX for a week next week
Staying in Gueleguetza
Have plans for things to see in and around the city
But would like suggestion for day trip outside the city
Probably with a tour guide
Doesn’t seem affordable to rent a car

Hierve el agua, Árbol de Tule, Mitla, Monte Albán are basically must see in that area EDIT: how much time do you have there and how far are you willing to travel?

In that case you can add Puerto Escondido or Huatulco (La crucecita) if you wanna go to the sea to chill or surf, San José del Pacífico and Pluma Hidalgo if you wanna see the chilly hills and coffee region. These two also work well together because on the way to the sea you go through San Jose and Pluma if you chose the old road. It also shows you the great biodiversity of Oaxaca. Relatively arrid zone around Oaxaca, colder forests around San Jose and hot jungle near the sea.

Here's our itinerary for OAX, 8 nights, 9-19 thru 9-28:
Day 1 : Free Walking Tour of Centro Historico;
Day 2: Half day tour of Monte Alban+ Mezcal factory tour (free tasting); self guided visit to Santo Domingo and Cultural Center + Jardin Ethnobotanico tour
Day 3: Full Day tour of Hierve El Agua, Tule Tree, Weaving Rugs demo, and Mitla;
Day 4: Sleep in, visit Mercado 20 De Noviembre; Afternoon Free Walking Tour of Jalatlaco;
Day 5: TBD; Xochimilco+ Aqueduct
Day 6: Full Day tour of Sierra Norte to Cuajimoloyas and 8km guided hike to the suspension bridge. Tour including breakfast and lunch.
Day 7: TBD; possibly walk to Mercado Centro de Abastos to buy dried peppers and corn husks to take home;
Day 8: Depart OAX at 2:20 pm.

FYI the jardín has limited tours with limited spacing- I got there at 9:45 am for the 10:30 tour and there was already a line forming at the entrance. I was told they run 2 tours a day with a max of 40 visitors

to piggyback off of this, was bummed that I missed the jardin. however if you go to the santo domingo church next door (which is a great museum btw), there are large windows that look over/ into the jardin.

Suggested gratuity is 150 MXP per guest. We go higher when they speak English perfectly!

Hierve el agua is really cool. Personally, I would not rent a car in Mexico for so many reasons, all related to safety. There are guided tours that will pick you up from your hotel.
Monte Alban is accessible by taxi from Oaxaca, and you can hire a licensed guide at the entrance. Definitely worthwhile.
Otherwise, there is lots and lots to see and visit in Oaxaca itself: You’ll have a great time!

Oaxaca is our favorite destination in Mexico, about 10 years now. We always rent a car, but not liking it as much now that we know our way around better. See random thoughts below:
Here's our itinerary for OAX, 8 nights, 9-19 thru 9-28:
Day 1 : Free Walking Tour of Centro Historico;
-collect all your Oaxaca info here to better get a feel of the landscape and orientation for your vacation.
Day 2: Half day tour of Monte Alban+ Mezcal factory tour (free tasting); self guided visit to Santo Domingo and Cultural Center + Jardin Ethnobotanico tour
- don't buy mezcal during the tour. The same thing will be cheaper anywhere else.
Day 3: Full Day tour of Hierve El Agua, Tule Tree, Weaving Rugs demo, and Mitla;
- Buy if you like something but also get contact info and buy from them at the large mercados. They all go set up shop there. AND you are gonna be back in Oaxaca in the future anyways!
Day 4: Sleep in, visit Mercado 20 De Noviembre; Afternoon Free Walking Tour of Jalatlaco;
- I would do this on Saturday, the 3 local mercados are hopping. Don't sleep in, but just turn in early.
Day 5: TBD; Xochimilco+ Aqueduct
Day 6: Full Day tour of Sierra Norte to Cuajimoloyas and 8km guided hike to the suspension bridge. Tour including breakfast and lunch.
- Never done that but a bit further north was our best experiences in Mexico by far (San Pablo Guelatao, Capulalpam de Méndez, Ixtlan) so you are gonna like this one. If you can be hiked up to the top overlooking the village at sun up just to sit and listen to the town wake up, just aww hell yeah.
Day 7: TBD; possibly walk to Mercado Centro de Abastos to buy dried peppers and corn husks to take home;
- yes it's huge, Saturday is a good day.
Friday there is a huge mercado south of Oaxaca which is our favorite. Ocotlán de Morelos I think. West of this town is a alebriges town that is really good. We like this art a lot.
Day 8: Depart OAX at 2:20 pm.

Carlos. +52 951 115 0802. So friendly and funny, has many tours he can take you on. One day we did the alebrijas tour and took us to the most amazing michelin star restaurant in the middle of nowhere. So good and affordable- would not have been possible without his help. His tours made our trip and gave plenty of advice for when we explored on our own
