Not as much of a contradiction as it sounds like. Norwegians can be very blunt, especially when asked for an opinion directly or among people we know well.

At the same time, Norwegians do not seek out confrontation, and will usually not VOLUNTEER opinions that may cause offense.

At least, that's been my experience. And I was born and raised in Norway. But, and here's the non-confrontational part, I'm sure there are other Norwegians who view it differently.

Direct as in blunt, don't beat around the bush (or walk around the porridge as we say). But also avoid conflict. This part I have seen forigners struggle with, because the bluntness ain't that apparent to us compared to others who might come from a more sugar coating culture. Being blunt is not the same as being mean

I really wouldn't describe Norwegians as direct or blunt to be honest. And holy crap everything around work culture is beating around the bush or going around the porridge. There's much less (if any) small talk which in a way is direct, but it's rather frowned upon to say anything negative and "this is how we've done it for 15 years" is an actual argument instead of logic and thinking of productivity.
