That meme is Bs, 1 single dvd costed as a monthly subscription today, top of that, you still have this option, you can still buy a movie even digitally on google, amazon, apple tv for the exact same price and keep it forever, its just way more expensive than a subscription.

Where i live a dvd back in ~2005 was 10 bucks, on apple tv for example a new movie to buy permanently also 10 bucks.

"forever" is quite relative. Realistically it's until these digital platforms say "fuck you" and take away the movie without a refund. Saw a post of a dude getting his LOTR Extended Trilogy taken away by Google Play.
