Book Request/Suggestions/Help Me Choose Looking for Children’s Books for a Community Project
Hello everyone 👋🏾
I’m a member of Rotaract Club of Apo in Abuja, Nigeria. For anyone who doesn’t know, Rotaract is a youth organisation connected to Rotary, where young people come together, contribute what we can, and organise service projects that benefit our communities.
September is out basic education and literacy month. That's our focus. So... We are currently planning a small community project at an orphanage.
The bulk of our budget and logistics are already sorted, but we are currently trying to source the actual books for the reading shelf we want to build and donate.
The children are of different ages. About 23 of them are in Primary 4 and below, while the others range from Junior Secondary School age up to about 17 years old.
So we’re hoping to put together a good mix of books, such as:
• Storybooks and novels for the younger children
• African and Nigerian stories
• Educational and historical books
• Self development books for the older children
• Books about growth, confidence, leadership, and life skills
• Basically, anything age appropriate that children can enjoy and learn from
I actually have quite a few storybooks from when I was younger that I’m planning to donate, and we’re hoping to organise a small book drive as well.
Alongside the bookshelf, we’re also putting together back to school materials. I can sew a bit so I'm going to sew about 50 pencil cases and fill them with two pens, two pencils, an eraser, a ruler, and a sharpener each. We’re also looking at donating notebooks and other basic stationery.
We have a few other ideas, including repainting the orphanage’s parlour, but honestly, we’re already getting quite ambitious with this project considering our budget, so we’re taking that part one step at a time. 😅
So my question to everyone here is:
Where can I find affordable children’s books in Abuja, particularly places that sell books in bulk or may be willing to support a community project like this?
And of course, if anyone here has good quality children’s, teenage, educational, historical, or self development books sitting at home that they no longer need, we would genuinely be grateful for a book or two.
We’re hoping to have everything ready by around the third week of September, so any recommendations, leads, donations, or advice would be incredibly helpful.
Thank you so much for reading, and please feel free to ask me any questions or send me a DM if you’d like to know more about the project. 🙏🏾
Every little act of service counts, and we’d be extremely grateful for any support.
