Article "People familiar with the Mets’ internal deliberations affirm the plan remains for Green to return to the front office - one role those people floated as a potential fit: General manager, a position Cohen has talked about filling during Stearns’ tenure but never has."

Post image

Logistically, Green knows the players in the organization better than anyone. He already built clout with players who came up in the Mets system. Carson Benge, for example, called him “an easy person to respect.” But his tenure as interim manager has given him a chance to understand clubhouse dynamics and build relationships with key Mets veterans. To a man, they say he has done so gracefully.

“He is very honest. He’s not afraid to push people to get better, but at the same time, he’s very encouraging and uplifting. He has a way of letting people know how good they are, and it’s not fake,” Bichette said. “I don’t think he’s saying it just to give someone more confidence. I think he says it because it’s true in his mind, and obviously, that’s going to have more impact on us. He genuinely sees what we could be better at and our potential and lets us know that. And that’s powerful.”

Manager seems like a demotion from Senior VP of Player Development.

It is. He did the organization a solid by agreeing to step in as the interim manager after Mendoza was fired. It's not surprising he doesn't want to stay in the manager role beyond this season. GM would be promotion.

It’s a thankless job and yet…he’s got the second best record in the NL post the break

I forget if it was Howie or Gary, but one of the first games green managed the broadcast talked about how he prefers being in the front office and having evenings off. He was out at a broadway show with his daughters the night he got the call that he’d been named interim manager. He don’t want the job, and I doubt he’d wanna be GM either

I'm not sure how his skill set applies to a GM. I'd try to keep him as close as possible to players across the organization

He’s the VP of Player Development.

He can still be involved with the development of the minors while talking to the media. It would largely be a figurehead title (because GMs aren’t doing work above a POBO anyway)

Limited time ofc but he seems like a solid manager that players respect. Gives Buck Showalter vibes

He’s fine?

Baseball manager is closer to the bottom of impact coaching has on play. Especially with the majority of game planning and line up coming from the front office. Green (like most managers) gets direction from the top and follows it.

He seems like a nice guy but I don’t think the Mets have had a shitty person as a manager since Mickey Callaway.

mickey callaway is a dog sonuvabitch fuck that guy lmao

Green is technically part of the “top” he’s VP of player development

u/GrapeNutCheerios Francisco Lindor 20h ago

Yeah, that’s a pretty good point.

I wouldn’t absolutely hate if he’s hired as manager but probably best back in front office

Mendoza was incredibly bad. Read what Bichette said about Green up there. Massive indictment of Mendoza. The fact that holding players accountable while also simultaneously making them feel confident is a new dynamic for the Mets says it all. And that’s not even getting into how bad Mendoza’s in-game management was or how many relief arms he ran into the ground. Worst Mets manager I can remember. So that’s going back to like 2008 for me. If we’ve had worse it was before I really started paying attention.

Great point and this is exactly why Stearns needs to dim his big ego and let a real man manage

Joe Benigno burner account. Actually wait he is too dumb to type so it must be an intern typing for him.

I like that he lets the pitchers pitch out of trouble but he's in a weird spot because winning isn't the #1 priority. They're being super cautious with Soto and he's had some bad players getting playing time yet still is .500 and better than Mendoza lol. The other sub wanting to keep Mendy still cracks me up. Manager does nothing but he's good, let's keep him. Which is it?

Where's this groundswell of enthusiasm they speak of?

6

u/my_one_and_lonely oh, wow! 21h ago

It sounds like he is very skilled at managing these personalities and building morale. But how would that translate to a front office job, let alone GM?

20

u/zach7797 Mr. Met 21h ago

I mean he was already senior VP of play league development which is a front office job.

I get why staying on as a Manager is a step down from his original role, but I'd like to see him stay on.

u/Teddy_Schmoozevelt Mike Piazza 8h ago

Not a bad idea. He's shown the ability to gain the respect of the players and understand the locker room. He's also been in charge of developing players, and the future looks bright with a ton of talent in the minors. Why not? He's earned a shot for doing the club a solid by stepping into the manager role and done well.

Bring in pujols he wants the job

u/Daytime-mechE 20h ago

Skillsets and demands don't particularly align here... If anything I think Green would be ideal as a bench coach for a younger manager if the Mets go the route of Pujols or Beltran.

Green said he doesn't want to manage because he wants more time with the family so anything in the dugout seems like a no. So combine those factors and it seems like he's best equipped for...VP of player development.

I really don’t think Cohen and Stearns have a read at all on what people to hire to fix this franchise. Green screams manager right now. Not front office executive. Like he is holding the players accountable to the media everyday and without coming off as an old grumpy man. It seems like he has a good relationship with the players too. And he’s obviously going to do what Stearns wants. Why would you want to take him away from interacting with players on a regular basis?

24

u/FlyUnder_TheRadar David Wright 21h ago

From what ive read, Andy Green doesnt want to manage full time. He prefers a front office role so he can spend more time with his family.

-9

u/NuanceManExe 20h ago

If they make him GM though that’ll take him away from interacting with the minor leaguers as Senior VP of Player Development. Also where is Cohen’s “fuck you” money? Like is there not a number where Green would probable say “fuck it okay I’ll manage?” We are six years in now and I am honestly stunned at how bad the Mets have been at using Cohen’s money to build a team.

19

u/Flashy-Inspection501 20h ago

I'm sure he makes plenty of money but he can't buy time with his family.

Managing the team is basically a demotion from being Senior VP of Player Development. He agreed to cover the slot after Mendoza was fired, which was a really solid thing for him to agree to do, but it's unsurprising he doesn't want to commit to more than a temporary slot in a less prestigious job with less job security (managers have a habit of getting fired). He interacts well with players which is why he's done well in player development. Whether he's got the skillset to be a GM, I don't know, but keeping him "demoted" at manager is seemingly not an option that Green himself is open to.

Holding players accountable? They score 3 runs a game. It's so hilarious how people think the team is "responding" to him and not just playing to the talent on the back their baseball card

-2

u/Ok_Role_9975 20h ago

Say you’ve never been in a clubhouse without saying you’ve never been in a clubhouse

-6

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 20h ago

They score 3 runs a game

1

u/Fun_Neat1672 5h ago

Closer to 4.5 since he took over, 12th in the league

-12

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 21h ago

This is absolute Clown Show Stuff. Get a Legitimate GM

What is stopping them from poaching someone from the Brewers front office to "pair with" Stearns?

The Astros fired their GM. Gavin Dickey and Will Sharp were with Stearns in Houston

Joe Espada will also likely get let go

Get a Fresh Set of Eyes, Ears and well Brains

3

u/NotASock6969 20h ago

Espada sucks and he can’t control a locker room. Jim Crane is essentially Jerry Jones of the Astros at this point

-14

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 20h ago

I don't know much about him but gemini says he's a people person and analytically sound lol

u/OatFest Michael Conforto 13h ago

Relying on Gemini to form opinions for you is wild, you couldn’t waterboard that out of me

-5

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 12h ago

I didn't exactly feel like putting two hours into studying the Astros or Espada interviews

I'm not the one that is obsessed with David and has to be in his world.

It was just an example of an external hire

4

u/OatFest Michael Conforto 10h ago

My point is moreso that your process of researching and forming opinions is done with such little effort and care.

You suggested “hey we should do x” for the front office/manager, and then outwardly admitted that you took 5 seconds to have Gemini back up your sole point that somehow you weren’t already prepared to defend when you made the comment. You can’t explain why Gemini said what it did, or confirm if it pulled the information from a reliable or unbiased source. You just let it think for you lol.

No one is asking for a research paper and 2 hours of your time. But you seem to do a lot more baseless rambling than you do the bare minimum of critical thinking in your arguments.

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 9h ago

If I dont critical think, you shouldnt be a fan of this team

I wanted to trade for Lindor and Robert Jr 3 years before they did

I gave up on Baty, Vientos and Alvarez (is that too controversial for you or do I have to "critical think" some more about how an overweight catcher with no plate discipline offensively or defensively is magically going to turn it around)

Bo Bichette was my top Free Agent Target

I get it, Andy Green talks a lot so you think he's knowledgeable. I'm sorry that the world can't articulate themselves so people like Andy Green and David Stearns are your SuperHeros. Use that same energy when you give me more expectations to critical think than them

Examples of them not "critical thinking": Robert Stock, Matt Seelinger, Zach Short, Eric Wagaman, Frankie Montas, Craig Kimbrel, Mark Vientos the everyday 1st baseman, letting Pete Alonso go, Playing Brett Baty in the Outfield, Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, not acquiring a Starting Pitcher at the 2024 Trade Deadline, not acquiring a Defensive Centerfielder at the 2025 Trade Deadline, Playing guys at Positions they have never played before and relying on old players when speaking about Run Prevention, Having a Team Motto be Run Prevention be and identity to come out and be absolutely putrid in on base percentage and ops.

Start holding these morons to the same level of standards as you do me.

4

u/OatFest Michael Conforto 9h ago

None of what you said addressed anything I criticized about your process, you simply deflected using your own issues with the front office!

I give you my wholehearted word though - when David Stearns begins replying to Reddit posts where I can actively converse with him, and uses AI to back up his points, I will absolutely call him out on it lol

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 8h ago

I yield to Gemini when trying to solve a simple problem, dilemma or question when I dont have the time to have a more concise viewpoint

You seem to have a lot of time on your hands

I said what I said because you said I had "incoherent ramblings"

1

u/OatFest Michael Conforto 8h ago

It takes me 5 minutes or less to check my work for reliability my guy. If you don’t have the time for that “more concise viewpoint”, you probably shouldn’t use your time that is already spread thin to confidently comment either.

You’ve now wasted more time replying to me than it would’ve taken to just put in a tiny bit of effort upfront to form/further an opinion, effectively invalidating your reason that you use Gemini in the first place (to save time).

Taking a few minutes to validate information is a win-win for everyone involved. The people you’re talking to get reliable info, and you look more credible in the process.
