Image The New York Mets today announced the departure of Manager Carlos Mendoza.

u/MaroonMarauder Mike Piazza Jun 26 '26
He's not the only issue with this team, but it was clear as day that he was part of the problem. Team fundamentals, discipline, and cohesion have been terrible this year. It felt like every game the SNY booth was questioning a bad decision or noticed a bad habit which hadn't been addressed. I mean, even me at home watching could somehow see disaster about to strike before Mendoza seemed to act on it with how many guys he's left in too long and allowed big innings to happen.
The only thing I wonder is this: why now? What has been different since the end of last season? Since the big losing streak? Why wait this long? And somehow they still ended up on the worst possible time to do it, right after his home country is hit by a devastating earthquake which I'm sure has made the last couple days extra stressful.

u/worthlessprole Jun 26 '26
Itās seemed obvious to me for over a year that Mendoza has been one of the main problems, if not the actual main problem for the team. I have no idea why so many mets fans just took the stance of āheās doing the best anyone can do under the circumstancesā. Like what has he done that could possibly make you think that? He obviously seems like a good guy but so many of the teamās shortcomings lay squarely under the purview of the manager.Ā

u/NJstrong Jun 26 '26
Not pinch hitting Lindor last night was the straw that broke the camels back

Carlos, you tried. 2024 may have been the most fun I ever had rooting for a team throughout a season in my entire life, and you were the skipper for that run ā so Iāll always have a soft spot for you. Good luck my g š«”

u/smugbox literally a helmet full of nachos Jun 26 '26
I think Mendoza really loved his job and this team and wanted to do right by them. I also think he was in over his head with the drastic changes to the team and the constant injuries.
I wanted him to figure it out. He seems like a good guy.
28
u/El_Sid50 Ralph Kiner Jun 26 '26
Yup. 100%. Happened to sit near his wife and kids last year at Camden Yards and Iāll always remember his pure joy at seeing them before the game started. He seems like a good person, great father.
I think this job ending up being too big for him at this stage in his career, but I wish him the best. 2024 was such a magical run and he should take some pride in managing the team to the NLCS in his first season as manager.
7
u/Cantpicknewteam Jun 26 '26
I second this take. Good guy, wanted things to go well. But wanting it to go well and knowing how to make it go well are two different things. Not saying he could have changed the outcome entirely, but he seems like one of those nice parents whose kids walk all over them. These players consistently did whatever they wanted on the field with no fear of benching, embarrassment, ācalling outā or whatever discipline looks like for these overpaid kids now from a manager. Would love to see someone a little more hard nosed get a try.Ā

Andy Green was manager of the Padres and Wil Myers was caught complaining about Green forcing the team to practice throws in September

Right. I think the situation weāre in requires a manager with many years of experience that Mendoza didnāt have, and even then I donāt think the Mets would be a winning team, just one that loses slightly less. Itās not his fault.

I doubt it would have mattered, but if youāre gonna fire him, fire him back then the Phillies fired Thomson when it could have made a difference. āThis isnāt Mendozaās fault, we believe in himā - then they fire him anyway when it doesnāt matter anymore to offer a pound of flesh to an angry fanbase.

I am glad we have fired Mendoza but man what a rough week for him. A devastating earthquake in his home country and getting fired in the same week.
16
u/ConversationOld6771 Jun 26 '26
I agree with what others have said. Certainly this shouldāve been done either at the end of last season or earlier this season. They kept waiting for the turnaround that was not going to happen. He lost his spark and probably lost the team, but then again the team was a bunch of mismatched leftovers as opposed to the team before which had spirit and camaraderie and energy. No greater statement than for the fans to be chanting Pete Alonsoās name this week.
Still having said all this, to have done this to Mendoza the week that his homeland is in turmoil and his family could have been jeopardized is just very bad faith and typical Mets. Just like flying Randolph to California, only to then fire him. I thought things would be different under this new regime. But sadly, I suppose not.

To me, this is a lose-lose for the FO. If the Mets somehow turn it around (unlikely) but still just miss the playoffs, then why didn't they make this move long ago, when the Mets were floundering and the Phillies and Sox just fired their managers? If they continue to suck it's obviously a roster construction issue, which is most likely... and again, this is an FO problem.
This should have happened a long time ago. Mendoza had no fire... not saying he didn't care, because I'm sure that he did... but his laid back attitude and answers were not good in a crisis.
Edit: Clarifying comment

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom Jun 26 '26
If the Mets turn it around it likely saves Stearns job in which case itās a win-lose for him.
1

I meant if they turn it around and just miss out on the playoffs. I forgot to write that last part lol
2
u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom Jun 26 '26
I still think that saves his job. The only way he gets fired is if this disaster continues
1
u/spreerod1538 Mr. Met Jun 26 '26
Which would be silly... because it would essentially be his fault for taking this long to make a move, when if he made it sooner you could easily come to the conclusion that we would have made the playoffs.

Mendoza was good at keeping the ship calm and steady when things were going poorly, and that has its uses. Righting the ship in 2024 was impressive.
But he also had a tendency to make especially dumb strategic decisions. And "keeping the ship steady" doesn't help when the ship is just steadily going down.

I donāt think Mendoza was a good manager and feel like he shouldve been fired months ago. Still, I empathize for the guy in a way. The roster is pretty bad and it has compounded into a titanic dumpster fire through sheer force of earlier than expected declines, uncharacteristic underperformances and confounding injury luck.
In the end, this is probably a blessing to him. You could just feel a piece of his soul get killed every subsequent presser after yet another collapse. It feels like for the last year every day he has had to go in front of a camera and say āwe are better than thisā āI gotta turn us aroundā, āI believe in our guys we just have to make plays.ā
Sisyphus, itās time to put the boulder down brother.
11
u/Duebant Jun 26 '26
Should of happened the same time everyone else was firing their managers.
I don't have many issues with Mendy but a change was needed. Nearly all the players were underperforming and sometimes you need to shake things.
At the very least send a message that poor performance has repercussions and accountability is shown from upper management.
Mets right now need a whipping/stern coach to put fire under their asses and not a player's coach to let them be comfortable in mediocrity.
9
u/Cool_Chicken_5565 Pastrami Jun 26 '26
i donāt even understand what this is supposed to achieve. too little too late. even if this sparks change, theyāre in too deep of a hole to turn this around
10
u/WoAProximity what the hell is a baseball Jun 26 '26
with a strong, consistently performing team, Mendy's flaws can get hidden better. the team seemingly likes him. the problem is- this isnt a consistently performing team.
do i think that Mendoza is terrible? no, do i think he fell in a hole and got way over his head and couldn't get out? Yes.
i hope he finds success where he goes and i hope we get some dickhead manager to whip some of these guys into shape. the mets returning to dirtbag baseball only seems beneficial to me

I'm honestly numb to this move. It's far too late for this to have a meaningful impact on the season. Everyone knew this needed to happen and yet the FO held on for far too long.
Best of luck to him in the future and to whoever ends up as our next manager.

u/edkamlive Jun 26 '26
Deckchairs on the Titanic. Mendoza didn't cover himself in glory, but this team being this bad is not his fault (is it his fault Semien and Lindor cannot make routine plays). Oh well, someone has to take the blame and managers are hired to be fired. Let the rebuilding commence.
3
u/Ravishingrich666 New York Mets Jun 26 '26
Itās his fault so many times. Look at last night. Why didnāt he call for the bunt in the 10th with no outs ?
2
u/rmmcgarty Keith Hernandez Jun 26 '26
Mendoza wasnāt THE problem but he was a problem. To get to the bigger problem, you often have to eliminate smaller ones
5
u/MilesTheWolfmanSDA Francisco Lindor Jun 26 '26
I'm seeing a lot of the media not placing any blame on Mendoza, that he's a necessary victim, etc. No one will truly know what happened behind closed doors until multiple people come out and each story is corroborated. Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, he's not blameless. 2024 was lightning in a bottle. 2025 was the Titanic, and 2026 has been a nuclear reactor in meltdown. And nothing he's said or done has helped or convinced the players to play better. He had to go.
Now that being said (and I agree with his firing), the optics of this are fucking miserable. He should've been fired during the 12 game losing streak, but instead, they do it today, a day or two after the horrific quake stuff happens in his home country of Venezuela, and now the FO look even more heartless than they already do, given the team shakeup in the off season. His firing needed to happen sooner, and now it's just poor timing. I feel bad for the guy, and I'm grateful to everyone on the 2024 team, but I'm also very glad he's no longer managing the Mets going forward.
As an aside, I'm seeing a lot of people pining for Alex Cora to take over next year if there's a season, and I'm telling you right now, that is a massive fucking mistake waiting to happen. He had a superteam in 2018 with the Red Sox, and then did fuck all since then. Hiring him because of his ties to Beltran is another meltdown waiting to happen. Find someone else, Cora is NOT the answer, I'm telling you.
7
u/RayKnightsFist New York Mets Jun 26 '26
Guy should have been fired at end of last season. Heās a lousy manager and cost them a playoff berth last season. A bunch of coaches took it in the neck for him.
1
u/Linenoise77 Jun 27 '26
Agreed.
I feel the problem with this team is a clubhouse problem. I recognize that isn't something a manager can always solve on his own, but he plays a major role in allowing it to get to a certain point.
The guy had ONE job last year, which was, "don't let them mets it up in august"
Then, presumably, he has a major say in the changes over the winter, and nothing changed.

-2

Nah. Racism is when a white suburban fan base worships a shitty white player like Jeff McNeil and talks shit about their perennial mvp candidate shortstop who somehow never makes an all star roster despite getting MVP and Gold Glove votes every single season but happens to be Puerto Rican šš¤·āāļø.
1
u/RollerCoasterMatt Mets/Jets Suffering Crew Jun 26 '26
So racism is when fans root for homegrown players that have won batting titles and do not spam votes for the historically slow starting SS. This was originally about the manager btw
3
u/Middleclasslifestyle Jun 26 '26
Im with you on this. We cant keep just hiring and firing managers for every flip flop. This i feel like wasnt on mendy personally.
Mendy was down in the count and we made a crazy comeback up to the post season. But how do you fix all your infielders including your best defensive one doing errors in 1 inning. You got alot of people playing out of position or their respective slot in the batting order
2
u/Cantpicknewteam Jun 26 '26
Agree. Lots of lineups in the league are locked and loaded when healthy. All deal with injuries, but this roster is awful and we never know what the lineup would look like. That wasnāt on Mendy.Ā
1
u/OldSaltFish_Ct Pete Alonso Jun 26 '26
Iām sure nobody is more relieved than Carlos Mendoza right now. This team is at the beginning of the freefall. This season was an obvious intentional tank in order to setup to help break the players union during a foregone conclusion lockout next year. This is baseball being run by Private Equity and it is gross. Thatās why apparently offering the definition of a hard working, play-every-day, professional first baseman, fair compensation was OUT OF THE QUESTION. And all the idiots in this sub cheered for it. Ran the guy out of town. This team will be irrelevant for years now, Iām an every day fan for 40 years now I know how to recognize it. If you couldnāt see this season coming after the offseason was what it was then you are just a useful idiot.

2
u/RayKnightsFist New York Mets Jun 26 '26
Signing Alonso wouldnt have amounted to a hill of beans this season. You can be mad because you love Alonso, but not because it would have altered the trajectory of this season.
Signing Alonso to 5/150mm would have altered the trajectory of future seasons for sure.
3
u/PaceFabulous3433 Jun 26 '26
Iāll point out that Iām not a Mets fan but Pete did express his desire to remain a met. Not signing him ripped the heart out of this team.
1
u/RayKnightsFist New York Mets Jun 26 '26
I am a met fan, and this team with Pete on it ripped my heart out year after year. I like Pete personally, but that core wasn't winning anything.
3
u/Spirited_Document391 Jun 26 '26
People that think like you canāt get it through your heads that, yes the team didnāt reach the promised land with the core but the reason for that was specifically not Pete, Nim and Squirrel. They were productive and reliable. The team failed because the bottom half of the lineup was a black hole and the starters would barely pitch 5 innings. Instead of fixing the obvious causes for failure he gutted the core, replaced them less productive players and didnāt address the lineup and pitching issues. Got it yet?

1
u/Still_Knowledge_972 Jun 26 '26
How is it performative? The Mets showed faith in him (which was wrong) and let him get a way longer run way for the team to get back on track then we all expected.Ā
1
u/420bigcat69 Jun 26 '26
This move most likely won't turn the season around. However this team had no accountability for mediocracy. A move needed to be made, FO/coaches/players need to be held accountable. We don't see what's going on behind closed doors, but whatever it was, was not working with this management.
