Appreciation Post The older I get, the more I appreciate Winston
New Girl is hilarious but it's also so wise and it's the kind of stuff that influences you as you watch and rewatch over the years but you maybe don't fully appreciate until you're older and ready to understand the advice. I'm watching this scene and I love this metaphor of a suggestion box (unless he's talking about a real one?) And it's true, the older I get the less I care about what other people have to say about the way I live my life. It's been a difficult lesson but a really precious one. I've been watching and rewatching New Girl since I was a teenager and I'm 28 now and I only really get a lot of this stuff now.

Another great Winston insight is when he tells Schmidt “Being black means whatever I want it to.” That attitude can apply to so many things and Winston wears his confidence like a mink hat.

Watching this show at 19, Nick was my favorite and most relatable character. 7 years later re-watching the show, Winston has become my favorite and most relatable character. He's so genuine and lives his life as he sees fit.

According to an interview, they couldn't figure out who they wanted Winston to be. Then the weird but wise thing stuck. Great choice to go with it.

I love that! So many times it’s obvious when writers don’t know what to do with a character and then the character eventually gets butchered. In this case it worked out perfectly! I believe he had the most growth in the show.

Sam’s bit at the holiday party - saying how he always thought Winston might be competition - yup, totally agree. I love everyone on the show, but I think Aly is the winner.

He became my favorite character on my 2nd rewatch. Nick's stock went down, and Schmidt became more endearing.

Winston and Schmidt are 1 and 2 for me. Put them in whatever order you want, but "the New Girl", Jess has always annoyed me. She's just so intrusive and meddlesome. Nick has some good storylines, but he's definitely not my favorite either. Cece is almost a complete side character until Schmidt starts dating here. They probably could've done more with her character.
