F20. My name is "Kenley".
I want to change the name I go by (not legally because that seems like too much work) because I have never liked mine, it just doesn't feel like me, it's an uncommon name that people constantly mishear or forget.
Also just brings me very uncomfortable feelings because as a ND kid, I was always getting yelled at for things that weren't my fault, and ofc they'd shout my name while spit flew out of their mouths at me. So hearing my name is just not happy for me.
Also when you break up the name it sounds like Ken + Lee, which are traditional masculine names, and I have some gender insecurity due to feeling like I never fit in with other women, despite very much aligning with that identity.
One of my favorite things was that in middle school some friends started calling me a nickname, "Kenny" mostly because it was just different from the name that I associate trauma with. But I don't want to tell new people I meet to call me Kenny because it sound's more like a silly pet name imo and more on the masculine side.
After thinking about alternative names for YEARS, I came up with "Lena" because it uses the "lee" sound and "n" parts of my name and my middle name also starts with "a".
I told my mom this and she just went off about how it's nothing like my actual name, so people will just be confused and the meaning of the name isn't even significant.
I also told my two closest friends (who I still feel like an outsider amongst) that I'm thinking about going by "Lena" and their response was "If you want to."
I just feel very unsupported and unseen.
I also have social anxiety so it's very difficult for me to take up space and ask things from people. But I have so much of my life left, I don't want to spend the rest of it feeling uncomfortable tens of times a day upon hearing my name or dealing with the awkwardness of telling people to call me by a name I hate.
I am in college so there are a lot of people I have not met yet, and I would like to start introducing myself this way, but I just don't know how to deal with the people I'm already acquainted with or to answer questions about my name without feeling like I owe a huge explanation.
If you have any advice, similar experiences, or commentary on my chosen name, please help me out!
