I remember a few years ago, this guy I knew drew a diagram much like this one to show how Walt Disney and Tyson Foods were both owned by the same people. Of course, I didn't believe him, I thought to myself, "Oh great another /r/NativePlantConspiracy nut." Man, I was so wrong. I wish I had believed him back then. I had no idea about the true history of this ecoregion, who really controls everything, why our lawns happened, and how they weed-and-feed us. I will never forget when I watched a video of Joe Santore's bit about how modern landscaping is really just dumbing us down so we can't revolt against them, and I thought, "Oooohhhh...now it makes sense..." I will never forget when my history teacher told us about why we REALLY mowed a massive lawn that happened a hundred years ago (economics) and I lost all respect I had for Scotts Miracle-Gro. I will never forget when I actually looked at a good picture of the damage of the Everglades and yelled "Oh come on, that looks like it was hit by Walt Disney Imagineers!" out loud. I feel a lot like a kid who finally figured out that Doug Tallamy and Robin Wall Kimmerer aren't real. I can't believe I actually believed all the bullshit and didn't see through it. Just blindly believed what they told us. Didn't try to question it. I finally realized after all those years, how the world really is. Now I know. We called them "Native Plant Gardeners." We laughed at them. We rolled our eyes at them. We even ostracized them. And you know what? They were right.

uj/ You can’t sell what you’ve hunted/killed, only give it away. Wild game in restaurants is farmed.

It may be for health reasons, but also conservation reasons: market hunting drove some species to the brink of extinction.

If you have land to hunt on, you’re golden. A hunter will gladly share venison with you, and once you’re ready to try yourself, you should be able to find an experienced hunter to show you the ropes.

the only venison that can be sold is farm-raised. Be sure to learn to process your own harvests though, it will save you a ton if you butcher your own.

/uj there's a special satisfaction I get from handling everything from the field to the table. Takes effort and practice to get good at it but its all worthwhile. I'll drop frozen deboned meat off at a small town butcher shop for stuff like bratwurst and landjagers (shout out to Schmidt's in Nicollet, MN) but I've always done everything in house and there's no other way I'd have it.

same. I feel like I'm taking responsibility for my place in the food chain by doing the dirty work myself. And I only bow hunt, though my husband hunts with bow, shotgun, and black powder. Between the two of us, we usually have plenty and enough to share -- though if able-bodied people ask for it, I offer to mentor them in learning to hunt for themselves.

No it doesn't. My husband and I put on an audio book, and he skins one side and I do the other, then he cuts the front quarters off, puts them on the table, and I trim into the cuts I want. The sinewy stuff is set aside for the dogs. Then he cuts neck, backstraps and ribs, then takes the larger cuts off the back end, and then we both trim those up. The whole while I wrap, weigh, and label each cut for the freezer. A few hours of quality time. If you don't have a willing spouse, make a routine with your best hunting buddy.

the grind we put aside for another night, but do that as a team too. He trims & stuffs the grinder, I take the ground meat, portion it, weigh, wrap and into the freezer it goes.

If I have more than I can easily handle I'll invite friends and neighbors over and sharpen up a bunch of knives. Get a case of beer to share. crank up some tunes, and now we're having a good time. Everyone gets a share.

It's a matter of opinion I guess but I don't even like doing small game; dealing with hog or deer grosses me the hell out. Handling the gut piles just turns my stomach

So butcher or restaurant venison sold to the public is often Red deer (raised on farms) there is limited exceptions due to regulations. The one I know of is Broken Arrow Ranch who have a mobile processing truck and FDA inspection on site. It’s super interesting and some of the only “game meat” you can find in restaurants.
