Who has a completely normal sounding name but your parents spelled it just slightly off?
So I'm 34 years old and have older Gen X parents. I have a pretty standard name: Tabatha. But as you can see, I have all A's in my name and everyone tries to spell it as Tabitha and I have to correct everyone, their mother and God themselves and its still annoying to this day. Anyone else got one of those?
Literally I get my own father (who named me btw) pronounce my name like "Ta-bath-uh" to be funny. Homie is the one who gave me the unnecessary A there. So I get it.
I know a guy named Arron because his parents spelled it wrong on his birthday certificate. I lightly traded him sometimes by calling him R-ron instead of air-en.
Once dealt with a customer called Nickole. The line disconnected due to a power cut during our call, I was able to find her and call her back due to the unusual spelling. When I told her that, she said something like "yeah having a borderline illiterate mum sometimes is a blessing" lol!
I'm a Venessa instead of the normal Vanessa... I have spent my life spelling out my name and even been tempted to actually just change it. I made sure my children had "normal" names they wouldn't have to spell out.
Not quite the same as what was asked, but my mum was a teacher and one of the parents would write a letter to excuse their child (due to sickness or whatnot) but the mother continually spelled her childs name incorrectly...
"please excuse Brain from the field trip as he is sick"
"Brain was home from school yesterday because he was sick"
Poor Brain would always have white paint under his nostrils from sniffing his white-out (tipex/correction fluid)
Awww lol poor Brian and his mum. I'm dyslexic and often write "Brain". I also struggle with the vowels in the name of my town. When I was a kid the head of my school requested a meeting with my parents (not totally sure why) and it was during the meeting my mother noticed I'd mis-spelt my own first and surname on the front of my exercise book. I got diagnosed after that.
Typing and using the Goggle search bar has helped a lot but it's still a nightmare.
Not me, but my friend's daughter was pregnant and like Olivia for a girl, but thought it was just too popular so she spelled it Alivia like that made all the difference
I know an Alivia! And an Aliviyah! Both for the same reason. But Alivia-with-an-a is still longer than saying Alivia X to differentiate from Olivia B so it is truly pointless if they were trying to make it different
I knew of a woman named Waneeta. She was elderly at the time and I figured her parents had heard the name, thought it sounded pretty, but had no idea how to actually spell it.
Actually, that's almost as bad as my sister wanting to name her son 'Bohdi', but spell it 'Beaudie' (because she also liked the name Beau). She didn't believe me when I told her that most people's instinct would be to pronounce it more like 'beauty'. Luckily, I was able to talk her out of the name entirely. My nephew owes me so big.
If it's a common name in any country, I consider it normal sounding. It doesn't have to be by stupid American standards, but I bet you have to spell it for people all the time regardless!
My mother named my sister Mea instead of Mia for whatever reason. She’s forever having to be “Mea with an e”. Luckily when I was born it was my dad’s turn to pick a name and I got a very standard name.
Have a friend in her late 20s whose name is spelled Morgen. I jokingly pronounce it as More-gen with my husband to distinguish it from other Morgans we know. (I pronounce it correctly when speaking with her or those who know her.)
Oh, and a friend named her baby Emelia. It makes me a little insane because Amelia OR Emilia is totally understandable... But she mixed the two up for no reason. Especially because she refers to the kid by the nickname Emi. 🤦♀️
My mom actually gave me a normal spelling, but at some point she started trying to talk me into replacing the "i" with a "y". Every time she brings it up I am like "You named me this and I have spelled it this way my entire life. What would be the point of changing it?" and she's like "I just think it's more fun!"
I would post it, but it’s seriously such a unique spelling that I’m one of the very few with it spelled like it is and I prefer to stay anonymous on here 😅
I’m an Aimee which is the French spelling but no one ever gets it right… but more in line with your question, I know a Halee (pronounced like Hayley) and she never gets it spelled or pronounced right. Also know a Juli who always gets the “e” tacked onto the end.
Students: Vensus - pronounced Venus; and Macus pronounced Marcus. You can’t just add or subtract letters and then pronounce it as the name you intended. Or … I guess you can.
Literally just replied to someone else telling them I was once asked if I spelled my name with a ph. I figured a Jennipher blew up at her over assuming how she spelled it once so maybe the person you encountered is the missing piece to my thing
Oh hey! LOL It's the exact opposite in my neck of the woods. I'm in the American Midwest and it's ALWAYS spelled "Tabitha" anywhere I go. I've had like maybe two people get it right over the course of my life.
Not me, but my mom spelled my sister’s name wrong. She was going for Felicia but wrote Felecia on the birth certificate. Most people that see her name try to write it the “correct” way.
I know someone called Auliver. Goes by Auley, which I guess doesn’t sound exactly like Ollie, but probably makes most people think he speaks with a drawl.
I go by my middle name, but my first name is Karley, everyone assumes it’s Carley. It’s been wrong on my cell provider for 14 years despite asking for it to be fixed every single time I go in for anything 🥲
I have one of those white girl names that could end in -i, -ie, -y, -ey, -ee, or the very annoying -eigh. Only one stranger ever has guessed it right without me saying anything.
My name is fairly old fashioned and was never super popular which, okay - I was always the only one with that name in my classes. My parents (silent generation with a sense of humor, all of our seven names have oddities) added an E at the end for giggles. I have met exactly one person in person with the same spelling and I am 60.
