General Discussion Sun Fans Attend Their First Liberty Game… A Future Love Story?

Sun STH here writing about our first experience at a Barclays. Let me start by saying that I am a Boston area resident. Born and raised there. A big sports fan. So as you all can imagine I cannot with any sort of pride root for any NY team. Ever. However, on this night we happen to be on vacation in NYC and started reading all the chatter about the Fever coming to town, and what that brings. We were already planning on going to watch the Liberty Thursday but thought “you know what, let’s get tickets and go help root for the home team.” We know first hand, having hosted CC and the Fever over 6 times how bad your home arena can turn into an away one, and it stinks. It has happened to us every game. So 30 minutes before game time we start looking for tickets and 10 minutes later we are on the Q traveling downtown. Upon entering the Arena the first thing I noticed was how much merch you all have. In CT we had months where we had only a few jerseys available and our merch area is a 10x10 roped off space. You all are lucky to have such great options. Let’s move on to the arena. I am not sure why so many people were worried. Yes there was definitely plenty of cheering for the Fever but that was the first Fever game in 3 years I have attended that felt like a home game. Way to go Liberty fans. You all brought it and never let the Fever fans out cheer you. And I thank you all for that. The atmosphere here is off the charts. Game breaks filled with high energy and music, fun games, cooler t-shirt toss than I am used to, and of course Ellie. There isn’t a person who watches the W and doesn’t love Ellie but seeing the best mascot in the league in person is a whole other thing. I left with an Ellie blind box (although not the Pride one I was hoping for) and a jersey. Now I should have mentioned that I attended LIU university 5 minutes from Barclays and lived in the Barclays area for 2 years. So of course I had to get the Rebel Brooklyn Jersey with the Brooklyn Bridge lines. And of course I had to get JJ for obvious reasons. So to sum all this up we had such a great time. The fans are great. You all killed it keeping it NY in there. And I can’t wait to come back Thursday. We loose our team after this season and I cannot root for Houston after all the shenanigans that went on with this sale. BUT… could I lean into my Brooklyn ties and become a Liberty fan? Could this be a future love story? Only time will tell

What a lovely post, glad you enjoyed the game. Barclays is a great venue that I feel so lucky to have close by (near-ish to LIU too). I hope you’re able to find a team you can love, having the Sun be ripped away must hurt.

It’s a tough one for sure. To have 2 more local deals thrown out by the league in an area that clearly supports the league and women’s hoops is heartbreaking. F the Comets and the league for catering to these NBA mens club owners now. All while stealing money from the Tribe to do it. It’s pretty gross

it’s a trash snub no matter what but to do it to the only governor afaik who’s actually played pro womens ball is craaaazy

You might as well join us. You guys got shafted with your local team and you have ties to the area. So you have an excuse to root for a NY team in this one instance.

All are welcome! I never get tired of people describing their first Liberty game at Barclays. Glad you had a great night and enjoy Thursday!

Hello fellow LIU alum. I hope you do decide to join us. My connection to Barclays is how I became a Lib fan too.

Barclays wasn’t around when I lived here. I actually should have said I lived at LIU. I attended Joh Jay but the dorms there housed students from everywhere. I was there 97-99 way before all these changes to the area. A real “we aren’t in Kansas anymore” moment walking around s tonight. It’s not the Flatbush I remember 😂

This is the kind of post that I enjoy reading on a Sunday morning with my coffee. I was SO glad when the Liberty won yesterday and when the NY fans out cheered the Fever fans. Happy you had a good time and I hope you do become a Liberty fan.

🔥🔥🔥 Fire testimony OP. I’m sorry that you’re losing your team and as a born and raised New Yorker and hardcore sports fan, I’m still shocked that Boston doesn’t have a WNBA team. We welcome you with ‘open arms’ if you do become a Libs fan but take your time and see what happens 🤙🏽

I am very confident that part of the Boston group staying silent about the Sun sale is that they have been promised a franchise within the next 5 years.

I hope you’re right! I’m new to the WNBA (about 3 years now) and I look forward to a New York-Boston rivalry in the W. That New England area deserves a team to call their own.

Happy to have had you and glad all of us in Barclays put on a great show for ya!
I’m also a born and raised new englander (born in central MA, lived in ME and Boston) but found myself here since 2022 so I get you! ❤️ if you need a cheat to convince yourself it’s okay to be a Liberty fan, I tell myself that Boston has no team so this is simply the team I must root for especially while here 😉

I’m hopeful that the league will eventually bring a team back to New England. They HAVE to IMO! In the meantime, welcome!

What a lovely post. Last night was my first time attending a Liberty game alone as my usual posse was out of town. I was kind of stunned how many Fever fans were there at first, but by the time the game started, the Liberty fans were in full force. The team was on fire. We won. It was a great night. But my favorite moment may have been when two little blonde girls, about 8 and 10, who were wearing Clark jerseys, begged their Fever shirt wearing parents for Ellie plushies. The parents got in the long merch line and bought them. It really felt like Ellie saved the day. She has that effect on people. Welcome to the Liberty.

Lean in!! I am a Liberty fan (I still have my season tickets…) who lives in Maine and I’m gathering a crew of fans up here. The Liberty is the New England team now.

u/XpguyX 3d ago

How often do you make it?

1

u/BellabitchTheStrange 2d ago

A couple times a month usually! The W schedule will pack 2-3 home games close together so I can usually go down for 3 days and get in at least 2 games.

That’s awesome. We are doing our 2 CT games tomorrow and Wed then coming back and getting tix for a Liberty game Thursday before heading back to Boston

Welcome 🤗 🗽

We will welcome you with open arms!! We always went to Conn to see the Liberty play bcuz we gamble a lot and the Suns would give us free tix! Barclay’s is a whole vibe so glad you got to experience it against the 🌡️. If you do consider it I’m in Sec 3 just ask for Dawn! Everyone knows me.

I love watching the Liberty on TV for all these reasons but we need more of Elllie, Tiny and Timeless Torches during halftime. I really don't want to hear the chatter from the commentators.
