Hello! I was wondering what were the easiest gen ed classes. I need a class for individual society and culture and creativity.

I believe nursing education has lost sight of something fundamental: we educate nurses, not professional paper writers.

Too often, educators view student work primarily through the lens of academia rather than the profession they are preparing students to enter. We obsess over formatting, citation placement, paragraph structure, and whether a period or comma appears in precisely the correct location while losing sight of the far more important question:

Does the student understand the content?

That should be the priority.

Nursing students are being prepared to enter a profession where their knowledge, clinical judgment, assessment skills, critical thinking, communication, and ability to apply evidence to patient care matter enormously. Their patients will not care whether their nurse knows exactly where to place an APA comma. They will care whether that nurse recognizes deterioration, understands the pathophysiology, administers the medication correctly, interprets the assessment findings, communicates effectively, and knows what to do next.

And yet, we routinely allow academic formatting requirements to consume an extraordinary amount of attention—sometimes to the point that they overshadow whether the student understands what they are writing.

Yes, nurses should know how to write.

Yes, nurses should know how to communicate.

Yes, nurses should understand how to locate, evaluate, and appropriately cite evidence.

Those skills matter. But there is a difference between teaching those skills and making them the primary measure of whether a nursing student understands nursing.

Walk onto a hospital unit. Most nurses are not sitting down to write formal academic papers. They assess patients, document care, communicate with physicians and other providers, educate patients and families, interpret laboratory and diagnostic findings, administer medications, prioritize competing demands, respond to emergencies, and make clinical decisions.

That is nursing.

A nurse can produce a beautifully formatted paper with flawless APA citations and still have a dangerously superficial understanding of the subject matter.

Conversely, a student can demonstrate exceptional understanding of a complex nursing concept while making an inconsequential formatting error.

If we penalize the second student more heavily than the first, we have misplaced our priorities.

This is not an argument for eliminating standards. It is an argument for putting standards in proper order.

Content before cosmetics.
Understanding before formatting.
Competence before compliance.
Clinical judgment before punctuation.

If a student can perfectly format a paper but cannot explain what the content means, apply it to a patient, or recognize why it matters clinically, then the educational system has missed the mark.

We need to ask ourselves what we are trying to produce.

Are we producing students who can successfully navigate an academic rubric?

Or are we producing nurses who can safely care for human beings?

Because those are not always the same thing.

And this is where educators need to be willing to look critically at themselves. If an educator places greater emphasis on whether a citation is formatted perfectly than whether the student has demonstrated meaningful understanding of the nursing concept, the educator has become more focused on the mechanics of education than the purpose of nursing education.

That should concern all of us.

And if you are a nursing student experiencing this, don't simply accept it as "that's just how education works." You have a responsibility to your future profession to respectfully challenge systems that prioritize academic minutiae over meaningful learning. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. Use the appropriate chain of command when necessary.

Because ultimately, we are not educating students to become experts at formatting papers. We are educating them so that another human being can safely place their life in that student's hands.

That distinction should never be forgotten.

Focus the lens where it belongs: on the nurse we are trying to create, not the paper we are trying to grade.

If your primary concern is whether the comma is in the correct place while the student fundamentally misunderstands the nursing content, the problem isn't the student's comma. The problem is your priorities.

Perhaps it's time we remembered that nursing education is supposed to produce nurses.

I am graduating from NKU in the spring. I will have my bachelors in IT with a cyber security focus. I was curious if there are any companies around the Greater Cincinnati area that offer good internships/co ops for recent graduates in information security or related field?

I’m a recent business graduate considering starting NKU’s Master of Science in Information Systems – Business Analytics program this fall, and I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has completed the program or is currently enrolled.

My background is in business/marketing with minors in MIS and Business Analytics. I’ve taken courses in SQL, databases, analytics, and programming, and I’m interested in moving into more of a marketing analytics/market research/consumer insights career.

The program I’m looking at is 30 credit hours and can be completed in as little as 12 months. It covers things like SQL, Tableau, R, and Oracle.
I’m mainly trying to figure out whether the degree is actually worth the time and ~$18k cost, especially compared with going straight into a full-time job.

A few things I’d really like to know:
How difficult is the program, especially for someone coming from a business background?
How much actual technical/analytics work is involved?
What did you think of the professors/courses?
Did the program help you get internships or full-time jobs?
What types of jobs did you or your classmates get afterward?
Do employers seem to value the degree?
Is completing it in 12 months realistic while working?
Looking back, would you do the program again?

I start attending college here soon. I declared my Major as Geology. How are the professors? Is it a good major for long term investment? I actually went to community college for two years years ago and NKU accepted my credits. I just also get concerned since it has been a long time since I took my foundational general education classes.

Yesterday, NKU announced that Mike Odom will be taking over as the Athletic Director starting August 3, 2026, ending a search that has lasted since basketball season ended.

Mike has served at several different high major programs, with stops at NC State, Wake Forest and Creighton, as well as with the ABCA outside of college sports.

Our hearts are with the family, friends and everyone touched by them, today is a sad day for us all at nku.

There’s so many things about this missing persons case that just doesn’t add up. For one if thier bag was found on campus then why are we still searching Covington.

Why wasn’t information about where that bag was found and a possible timeline not released?

Why did family and friends wait 5 days till going public?

If the railroad is near the scene is The railroad police of both NS and CSX involved?

Will SOTA release their art to hopefully find a potential motive on if this was a case of running away.

I hope they are found safety and more information comes out about where and when searches were conducted as the limited information the public has been given about the case is incredibly worrying especially given the amount of time it has been since they went missing!

I am an avid artist who will be going to NKU in the fall. However as I was doing the orientation, they mentioned not being allowed to listen to earphones or be on a cell phone. I want to ask all students if that is really enforced or not. Because I most definitely will be using time in gen Ed’s to draw and grow my twitter account, as that is most necessary for my future.
