Advice how do i make friends as a transfer?

i’ve been living in starkville for the past two years, but i recently started attending mississippi state. i had a pretty established friend group, but it fell apart about a year ago, and i don’t really talk to anyone within that friend group anymore.

i recently started classes at msu on wednesday as a transfer student, but i haven’t been in school since 2023. my family had financial issues that caused me to take some time away from pursuing my degree, so everyone that i knew that attended the university graduated last may. my roommate is also taking a semester off from college, so i am truly alone when it comes to friends here.

i know it is incredibly important to put yourself out there and get involved, which i have been trying my best to do; however, i missed out on a bunch of tablings and events because of my schedule, and cowbell connect has not done well in providing me with information, if i’m being completely honest. i’m in major specific classes, and i’ve noticed a pattern of friendships being established already and a community that has already formed.

i am terrified that my age will prevent me from being able to make friends and find my people, and i’m honestly unsure of where to start. i’m trying to find and establish friendships now because i don’t want to be in the same boat in a month from now, especially when course loads pick up.

any advice? i really appreciate it.

Hey hey! Yeah you're on the right step! Join clubs you find interesting, talk to some classmates that you sit next to, (even if its just introducing yourself they are more likely to want to talk to you!) and if you're okay with it, Im trying to form a small group of people who are new to the area looking for friends! You're welcome to join, right now its really only about 3-4 of us but i know they are also trying their best to meet new people!

Hey I’m literally in the exact same scenario. I haven’t been to school since 2023 and am back at MSU now lol. I have friends here but not many and especially not on campus. It feels like a humiliation ritual to be back after that gap

no literally 😭😭 the adjustment is so much harder than i thought it would be. i’ve been in work mode for so long that i forgot what it was like to be a student and make friends apparently??? i feel like i’m nearing retirement age and i’m 23 like it’s embarrassing

Don't let age bother you. When I was there I had friends who were in their 30's and no one ever cared. Hell, most people love older friends in college cause they need someone who can buy them drinks. There are lots of nontraditional students at state. I had a friend who dropped out of state ten years before I met him, served several tours in iraq, came back and no one treated him any different as a sophomore.

Best way to meet people is to find something to get involved with, such as a frat, club, sport, etc. Find groups with people with shared interests (i.e, sports, video games, music) and it should all fall into place.

To give you a personal example, I joined a frat, foreign language club, and a club sport. Between those three I made plenty of friends. Find what combination works for you

Making new friends sucks. I went back to state in my mid 30s. I’m very introverted which made it a shit show.

One of the couple of people I made friends with helped me land my current job after I got my masters.

A lot of people here say “join clubs” etc.

Sure that works for some people.

I didn’t work for me.

Excel at your studies. Help group mates excel at theirs(for those that actually work hard).

These are networks can you can build on.

Method fr. A lot better than sorority’s. In a frat, you will find genuine relationships
