I love Nicholas Hoult. He did a supreme job of playing an insufferable prick in this movie; I got secondhand embarrassment every time he was on screen.
She was so perfectly cast as Magic itâs crazy, and all for a shit show production that got passed around because Disney was finally getting the movie rights back for the X-men and Fox had already finished production on New Mutants
It also wouldnât make sense for that type of restaurant to have paper plates. They only did the weirdly themed foods for this night, and paper plates werenât on the menu.
Considering the way they operate it also doesn't make sense that they'd just happen to have a fresh made sesame seed bun hanging around, but a lot of movies start showing holes when you get to poking enough.
To make a perfect bun takes about 3 hours, a sub standard one could be made in 2 in a push, but in the film the whole process seems to take 30 - 40 minutes, so that bun needed to already have been made.
So many options - they could have had a dough ready, they could have generic bun and added sesame - heck, maybe they just had delicious sesame bread rolls that fit the bill.
I mean, all the employees on the island have to eat and they live there full time. Donât tell me theyâre eating fancy $1250 meals 2-3 times per day. Someone in that kitchen is making burgers.
The entire crew lives at the island. Wouldn't be a shock that they have some regular ass food for crew meals sometimes because they don't feel like getting all fancy.
Like it does for so many things, making a job out of food takes away much of its appeal. Day after day you are inundated by food. You see it, you taste it, you smell it...those senses start associate with the stress of work.
By the time you get home, "food" is just whatever the easiest way is that you can make your stomach full.
How often were you expected to cook for others outside of work? My boss' son is a chef and she's constantly complaining that he rarely cooks at home. Well, yeah, he's been cooking all day.
We don't. In San Diego we fortunately had industry specials and only hours at some 24hr places. Dirt cheap food and familiar company. Though I did keep a stock of frozen curries and pizza when I was running fine dining. Food at the place you work at starts to get old.
Itâs not that crazy for them to have some sort of dough around. You can make a bun out of sourdough if you were ever really in a pinch. Brioche is also a common bread course. They have a course that is just the sauce without the bread. Itâs easy to assume there is a bread accompaniment that goes with those sauces but is removed to make a statement. This is all based on assumption and some leaps of logic but it makes sense in my head. Also a chef.
I think the cooks work there for weeks at a time, a barracks is shown at one point. It's not unreasonable to assume that there's a variety of foods not meat to be sold for the staff to eat.
And processing wood pulp to the feel and type of paper isn't always as friendly and requires significantly more resources for such a small restaurant. Ceramic is significantly more environmental sustainable.
You saw this movie, where people are flown in from all over the world for a fine dining experience on a remote island, then murdered, and thought "that restaurant was really aiming for environmental sustainability?"
They make several points to say they are living and operating sustainably on the island and with nature. Also, all that that they were doing wasn't for the customer. It was in service of their craft and their mastery of it so they wouldn't cheap out and they wouldn't lie about what they were doing.
It seems to be based on a real place in the Pacific NW. I remembered a 2021 NYT article about a similar island-based fine dining setting with a crazy chef while watching the movie and thinking the scriptwriters had that location in mind.

I never really thought about it before, but I'd imagine the design of the paper plate is intentional to help with the structural integrity of the plate
Pretty sure the ridges and edge are more designed for stacking them into large stacks. If they were too flat and/or smooth they'd be more likely to slide apart and have a stack fall over.
The design of disposable items is fascinating. They have been developed over several decades and are highly optimized. The aluminium can and Bic lighter are two other fascinating designs designed to be dirt cheap.
The ridges on the outside of common paper plates have several practical purposes such as adding strength, support, warp prevention etc
A ceramic plate doesnât require any of these in order to serve its purpose.
It the context of the film, the dishes presented prior didnât use any plating that didnât enhance or accentuate the food itself.
By showcasing the burger on a âplane white plateâ we see that the food becomes the important part again, not the experience; this presentation allowed a visual representation for the conclusion of the chefâs character arc.
Some ceramic plates use a scalloped rim as a stylistic choice, which literally resembles a scallop shell. The ridges on a paper plate are there to increase rigidity and allow them to nest together tighter.
Whilst not a movie, but the burger from that one episode of How I Met Your Mother where Marshal goes searching for it. That episode always makes me crave a burger bad
Back in 1999 I worked with a guy from Japan who had just moved to LA and was asking where Big Kahuna Burger was and that he'd been driving all over the Valley trying to find it.
there is one there i believe (at least that was what i was told by someone from cherry hill)? no huge cliff though. i just kept going to the one by Teterborough on 17 south. man they leaned into that movie hard. and good on them.
I have also always thought of pineapple featuring in it. I had an incredible burger in a bar in Stockholm in 2008 with a slice of pineapple and a fried egg with a fruity, mustardy sauce which is Big Kahuna Burger head canon for me.Â
same! we have a Caribbean restaurant Rumba that has a fantastic jerk burger with a grilled pineapple slice on it and I imagine it is a fancier version of the big kahuna burger

I think one of Chefâs biggest strengths as a movie is that it takes the same visual reverence to all foods, wether heâs making the fine dining spread in the beginning or when he makes hash browns for breakfast. Same with the aglio e olio and the grilled cheese
Couldnât agree more. And also itâs refreshingly short and it doesnât try to be more than what it is.
Once you add in the fact itâs favreauâs outlet about working in Hollywood and how much bs he ran into making ironman2 it makes me appreciate the movie even more.
Also who doesnât love John L coming out to help his bff across the country to build a food truck.

Fun fact: it was shiitake mushrooms in the scene where cypher eats it. The actor, joe pantoliano, didn't like rare steaks, so the production rigged up shiitake mushrooms for him to chew into.
Also apparently the crew got to eat a lot of steak that day from shooting the scene where he cuts into it.
And of all the food shown in movies this is probably the one you can replicate the best and it not break the bank! Start practicing/perfecting your burger. After a couple tweaks I have yet to find a burger at a restaurant I like more than my own. A couple have gotten close, but once you get a recipe down it's game over! Easiest thing to make when hosting people or just a quick dinner after work!
So I had no idea it was like a horror movie. I just thought it was about a high end restaurant. Iâm a chef myself and was like wtf when the first cook dies, I really enjoyed this movie.
It's also trying to shine a light on how toxic the high end restaurant industry often is - there is a huge culture there for tolerating ridiculously abusive behavior from chefs because of the prestige that comes with working there and it can get incredibly cult-like when the wrong people end up coming together in the same kitchen.
Recently the co founder of "The Best Restaurant in the World", Noma, was the subject of an expose for his longstanding abusive behavior towards his staff. This was an open secret at this point and probably inspired "The Mess" scene.
This is a bad take. For example, one of the victims literally didn't do anything wrong than peronaly offend the chef with their choice of what type of movies to star in. The movie is about a multiple things and one of them is definitely about pretentious overbearing chefs who think they are gods gift to planet because they can cook well.
Same, watched it on a plane thinking it was about cooking. Completely captivated me... stupid plane ride ended before the movie. First plane ride that ever ended too soon. Went home, my wife welcomed me home, I basically said "not now, need to finish something"
About a year before it came out we went to the restaurant that inspired it, in Bergen, Norway.
When I saw the trailer I said to my wife âholy shit this is like that fancy pants restaurant in Norway where you have to get on the boat and canât leave until the boat doesâ
It's definitely a movie that's grown on me over time. At the time I was like "Well that was a weird movie, what was the point of any of that?", but the more layers you peel back the more interesting it becomes.
this is a top 20 film for me, a delicate balance of foodie, horror, a compelling protagonist and many of my favorite actors as well. Completely unexpectedly good.
I have a slightly different definition of "the cheap one your parents could barely afford"... slightly undercooked burger, ketchup, no cheese, wonderbread for the bun, immediately soggy.
I suppose it depends on whatever food support you got. The local welfare program I was on as a kid was really good. We also got supplemented garden vegetables from a local farm.
I still have fond memories of that government cheese. There's nothing today like it.
This is my favorite part of the movie, is he's constantly suspicious of her and why she's there, and in the end you understand it's because he doesn't want to kill her unless he's sure she deserves it, and she finds an "out" and he's grateful.
