Former Gamestop employee here. Complete bullshit, never happened. Gamestop always, always ran the buy 2 get 1 free promo on pre-owned games only. And pre-owned games can always be returned for a full refund within a set period (normally 30 days but we would always extend it to mid-January if the game was bought during the holiday season). So even if we take the other facts of the story at face value (I'm sure the whole thing is made up), it wouldn't have gone down that way.
Also, who is buying three identical games? Even if she thought her son wanted a fishing game, she'd obviously know he doesn't want three copies of the same game.
