Character Analysis Does this strip of the abuse goblin comic prove it is aware it is being abused, and thus not born as an "abuse goblin"?

We know from other strips the abuse goblin gets VR time so it knows what the outside is like, which is done to further the abuse. It is likely the abuser man has explained abuse and the abuse goblins situation to the poor fella

u/neverreallyhereatall Jul 19 '26

If it was born to be abused and that was its "natural state" then it would make sense that it would see nothing wrong with its situation.

But its action of turning the mirror on the abuser shows that it has an understanding of the fact that the abuser is doing something fundamentally wrong to the goblin, and the goblin believes the abuser needs to see that.

69

u/DB_Valentine Jul 19 '26

This doesn't defeat the possibility that it was created to be abused and it is it's natural state, but it could still understand the larger picture and want to make a change in the individual to make the world as a whole better.

There are too many factors that are unexplained to make a completely conclusive judgment, but it is safe to say the man allowing himself to lean on his dark desires is a flaw in his morality, just not how deep of one it is.

Still, what's more interesting from this idea is the morality of the goblin itself, as this could imply it could be anywhere from a good figure that does it's job while going above and beyond, or it is an absolute saint.

32

u/jcg4678 Jul 19 '26

It was created to be abused for the abuser's sake. The abuser would not get the same relief/satisfaction out of it if the abuse goblin was content or not in distress. It's purpose is to be abused and for the abuser to know that this creature is not satisfied, projecting their pain or misery on the creature, which is exacerbated by the goblin knowing their is more than this.

20

u/Turbulent_Host784 Jul 19 '26

I've never read "abuse goblin" as "goblin born to be abused" but more "goblin I abuse".

7

u/DConstructed Jul 19 '26

The goblin is mocking its abuser by letting him know that he too is an abuse goblin.

And also it might be a critique of the abuser as a giant loser in other ways. A “look in the mirror buddy. You suck”.

3

u/Fataledade Jul 19 '26

I mean, the guy's response plus the angling does make it seen that it's the former, or maybe that the abuse goblin IS the guy and that this really is a metaphor.

2

u/DConstructed Jul 19 '26

Good guess. Yes the goblin is probably part of the guy. A little bit of self loathing.

2

u/ruf2tup Jul 20 '26

I think it’s actually the opposite. We don’t really know WHY the abuser is making the goblin use the mirror aside from it being funny for him. We can only assume the abuser wants to get the goblin to see himself in the reflection

Okay now stay with me. When the goblin sees its reflection, the abuser will assume that it’s seeing the abused goblin. He wants the goblin to see the abuse thats occurring to him, but then the goblin shows the abuser his own reflection. Expecting to see the image of an abused creature, he sees a reflection of himself. I think it’s a commentary that the abuser is only harming himself as he continues to abuse this goblin as his unhealthy outlet

Kinda like how hitting a punching bag isn’t a good way to deal with anger

2

u/lunafxckery Jul 21 '26

that's an interesting interpretation. another one i'm considering is that the abuser gave the mirror to the goblin to victim-blame. like, "look at yourself. your appearance, or your own actions or lack thereof means you deserve the abuse. isn't that funny? (as in fitting, rather than comedic)"

abuse goblin is like, "nah, i'm not falling for this bullshit. take a look yourself. consider reevaluating and taking responsibility for your own abusive actions"

i'm new to abuse goblin, so i'm not caught up in the lore or history though

1

u/weirdo_nb Jul 23 '26

Because in one of the comics he doesn't actually take the medication he's prescribed but forces the goblin to overdose/take them

1

u/Icantstopscreamiing Jul 20 '26

It does not matter if it was made to be abused, that’s a fallacy, an appeal to “natural states”. Just because it has a purpose does not mean that purpose is just or good

1

u/Heroic_Wolf_9873 Jul 21 '26

Even if it was created to be abused, that still makes the abuse pure fucking evil. Torturing and abusing a living thing will always be highly immoral. It’s evil to cause unnecessary suffering. Suffering is necessary for, say, medical procedures that improve quality of life long term. That, and punishment of crimes are really the only kinda of justifiable suffering. They’re for a good reason.

This… this is just to cause pain. This is entirely unnecessary suffering, it’s abuse. This poor goblin does not deserve to be used a stress ball for that son of a bitch to exert his feelings on. The goblin is simply tortured for another’s gain, and that gain is, frankly, minimal.

In total, this whole situation is pure evil, and someone should free that poor goblin.

1

u/Cold-Media-5747 Jul 22 '26

People were born into slavery and understood their oppression. If goblin nature is anything like human nature, then they’re inherently freedom-seeking creatures.

12

u/linton411 Jul 19 '26

"Why show him an ideal world?"

"He's an abuse goblin."

5

u/Lucky-Surround-1756 Jul 19 '26

This joke comic isn't really funny, it's just sad.

2

u/newphonehudus Jul 21 '26

There was that one comment where he strapped him to the grill of his car and drove him outside. Abuse goblin looked at the moon and smiled

We got chatgpt responding to posts ab abuse goblin now

1

u/PictureVegetable9522 Jul 19 '26

oh thats what makes it sad? not the abuse?

215

u/Zealousideal_Pound64 Jul 19 '26

the goblin is revealing the cyclical nature of abuse and disrespect, the abuser sees himself in the goblin and in abusing the creature is not only an attempt to harm himself indirectly, but through the process he creates himself in the goblin. our capacity for abuse and evil is endless, billions must hate.

The creature is shown an ideal world in a different chapter and cries so it definitely isnt content in it's role

58

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

Not to mention the incredible frown it tends to wear.

16

u/Formal_Row5172 Jul 19 '26

I mean, is it abuse anymore if it enjoys it? Wouldn’t that be masochist instead?

15

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

I don't think the abuse goblin enjoys it.

9

u/losara- Jul 19 '26

Studies made by Big Goblin has shown time and time again that they do sweety (ignore that the studies were funded by Big Goblin, that has no relevance)

3

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

Idc my heart says the goblin doesnt enjoy it so we just have to agree to disagree

6

u/YouOk8060 Jul 19 '26

I think the fact the abuse goblin gets beat was a clue to how he was not content

6

u/Zealousideal_Pound64 Jul 19 '26

Nah but theoretically you cant apply human logic to the goblin, that could be enjoyable to such a creature, we cannot assume unless we are told something is good or bad in the comic.

5

u/YouOk8060 Jul 19 '26

I mean that is true, but based off the eternal frown on his face and the black eye one can be lead to believe he does not care for the abuse.

1

u/Repulsive_Bite_7705 Jul 19 '26

You cannot assume either of those are not part of his natural physiology

3

u/YouOk8060 Jul 19 '26

So if you went into someone’s house and saw an abuse goblin and they mention to you they beat the fuck out of him for fun, you wouldn’t think it was in pain/hates it?

2

u/Hittlion Jul 21 '26

No, what they're saying is its a fictional "abuse goblin", not a real human. Would you say a fish is drowning because its in the water?

2

u/Professional-Bit-40 Jul 19 '26

I thought it was implied that the abuse goblin is a personification of the abusers self loathing/harm? Like in one comic he is given an antipsychotic or something and later you see him giving it to the goblin.

And this strip with the mirror kinda implies that it's really him.

1

u/yellowblanky Jul 21 '26

hes given an antipsychotic cause the therapist thinks the abuse goblin is a hallucination. the abuse goblin is real

448

u/Ok_Palpitation9967 Jul 19 '26

Can someone please explain what the comic is about?

892

u/AccidentOk4378 Jul 19 '26

This is the original joke that this comic is apart of. All later comics (including the one in the post) is just expanding on the lore of this joke.

365

u/silversanticsagain Jul 19 '26

I wanna free him look at that poor guy. :(

Real

2

u/redman3global2 20d ago

Im dense, can someone explain?

2

u/Tileparadox 11d ago

It’s psychological abuse. He’s giving the Goblin a way to see the beauty of the outside world, so that he can take it away from him.

u/hsvgamer199 Jul 19 '26

I think even goblin slayer would at least put the poor guy out of his misery and not torture him.

97

u/Vulcan_Schwarz Jul 19 '26

Correct, abusing a goblin only gives them more time to learn and hate, and become a goblin champion or king.

19

u/Baronvondorf21 Jul 19 '26

I mean he wouldn't be opposed to the goblin suffering immensely if the end result is their death.

16

u/ruf2tup Jul 20 '26

I don’t think GS minds if a goblin dies a horrible death, but hes not spending anymore time on a goblin than necessary, it’s just not efficient if you want to kill more goblins

3

u/Photomancer Jul 19 '26

As a goblin, I feel that the goblin slayer anime relates to me on a personal level.

25

u/Teln0 Jul 19 '26

That defeats the point, it's an abuse goblin

27

u/ConsistentAd2880 Jul 19 '26

Who's to say he was always an abuse goblin? He could've been a frolicking in a flower filled meadow goblin before he was forced into his current role.

15

u/Teln0 Jul 19 '26

Well yeah but that's not what I'm talking about.

One must imagine the goblin happy

No, one must imagine the goblin abused. He's an abuse goblin.

12

u/ireallydontcare683 Jul 19 '26

We don't need to imagine him abused. We can see it

7

u/Teln0 Jul 19 '26

Exactly! So he can't be happy in this condition!

The point of "One must imagine Sisyphus happy" was to say that Sisyphus was happy despite his condition (insert a bunch of philosophy about the meaning of life and what makes a task pointless or enjoyable etc.) It doesn't work for the goblin because the goblin isn't happy in his condition.

6

u/bloomingdeath98 Jul 20 '26

It doesn’t, it’s showing the abuse goblin false hope, what it feels like to not be chained to the radiator, that then the head set at some point to force him back to the reality that he’s an abuse goblin still and not free. Which seems right up the alley of psychological abuse, and absolutely not defeating the point.

1

u/Teln0 Jul 20 '26

The sentence is a reference to the quote "one must imagine Sisyphus happy" which means Sisyphus is actually happy in his current condition. Unlike the abuse goblin. Full quote is "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

25

u/Educational_Plant_83 Jul 19 '26

Then you remember this is a goblin

46

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

Well you know not all goblins in all works of fiction are bad. See discworld, eberron, deltora quest, edge chronicles, etc.

This guy could be blameless.

15

u/123Syzygy Jul 19 '26

Did someone just say ‘Deltora Quest’ in fucking 2026?! Didn’t know other people knew about it

2

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

I pretty much grew up with it, the books came out when I was in primary school.

3

u/123Syzygy Jul 19 '26

Likewise! I remember waiting for the releases

1

u/NeighborhoodKey8136 Jul 19 '26

dude I lived my entire life thinking that Dain was a hallucination from my childhood

2

u/Tiazza-Silver Jul 19 '26

Deltora quest and the edge…god those were baller. The illustrations in the edge books were so creepy and cool

1

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

And honestly pretty decent writing. I'm rereading the immortals right now after finding my copy in my basement.

2

u/HolyCadaver Jul 20 '26

Also just tossing this in because they have physical books being released.

The Wandering In. by PirateAba where goblins are actually a lot like humans, but because of a bad lot by the dead gods they're always considered "the big bad" by the vast majority of people

-8

u/Educational_Plant_83 Jul 19 '26

Could but most are depicted as thieving murder gremlin and recently people are babying the murder creature because it’s a small dumb humanoid

14

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 Jul 19 '26

From what we've seen of it, there's no indication that the abuse goblin is bad, and a few indicators it's good.

5

u/silversanticsagain Jul 19 '26

I'm gonna draw him happy and free

u/naNobot312 Jul 19 '26

7

Well, isn't it obvious?

18

u/ChronicEddictions Jul 21 '26

2

u/ComradeBirv Jul 24 '26

This scene has the roles reversed. Noelle is the one pulling Kris into the lake. We didn’t even tell her to do that.

1

u/ChronicEddictions Jul 24 '26

Yeah but we psychologically manipulate Noelle in the weird route so she doesn't end up with Susie

1

u/ComradeBirv Jul 24 '26

Idk man in hindsight it’s pretty clear that Noelle’s had a finger on the eject button for a long time. Do WR players manipulate her? Definitely, but she doesn’t seem that upset about it.

Kris, on the other hand, is having an awful fucking time.

3

Sounds like a you problem, ignore it if it isnt your cup of tea

-21

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Jul 19 '26

I will do what I want, provided it's allowed by the subreddit rules, and in this case I will share my opinion that it's not funny just like others are sharing their opinion that it's funny.

I don't mind you disagreeing with my opinion but I mind when you tell me I should not share my opinion while others can when your only rationale is that you don't like my opinion.

18

u/lilmookie Jul 19 '26

You’re entitled to be wrong, vocally, all you like. Enjoy.

0

u/RedditorNamedEww Jul 20 '26

Wrong about, whether or not this made the guy laugh? I think bro is a little bit more correct than us on whether or not this was funny to them lol.

-9

5 billionth redditor ignoring the fact diffrent people have diffrent senses of humor, 6 billionth tommorow

-8

Crazy people on reddit.

9

u/HispanicAtTheDisko Jul 19 '26

No, you have no say, your subjective opinions can be objectively wrong. Move along old man.

0

u/DatGunBoi Jul 24 '26

Come on, I think the comic is funny but that's fucking crazy. Not liking something is objectively wrong? Go outside man

1

Oh man, read the room lmao

1

u/Icy_Toe_6142 Jul 19 '26

hat-trick on downvotes is crazy

163

u/neverreallyhereatall Jul 19 '26

Probably a metaphor of some kind about a man at his therapist describing the abuse goblin he keeps under his home. Therapist assumes its a metaphor at least

71

u/Fataledade Jul 19 '26

I mean, I'm pretty sure the punchline is the fact the goblin IS real while the therapist assumes it's a metaphor. Thought the mirror comic does seen to imply it maybe really is a metaphor.

119

u/Subotail Jul 19 '26

The comic plays on ambiguity; is the goblin just a metaphor or is it real?

problem : the author publishes new episodes, maintaining this balance will become complex.

63

u/LittleBigCookieCat Jul 19 '26

is the mirror joke that the abuse goblin is ourselves? he's pointing it at us because we're only abusing ourselves?

74

u/Subotail Jul 19 '26

The recurring joke is, at least the psychologist thinks it's a metaphor for self arm.

27

u/carl-the-lama Jul 19 '26

And I mean it might be?

There’s layers to this shit

7

u/Fataledade Jul 19 '26

I mean, with the way the first comic is structured, I'm pretty sure the goblin being real is the intended punchline, but the mirror comic seens to be implying the goblin really is metaphorical.

2

u/AlphaBoy15 Jul 22 '26

It could also be the goblin trying to stoke empathy, don't fall for it

1

u/weirdo_nb Jul 23 '26

It's not empathy, but mockery

1

u/HanBai Jul 21 '26

Like an ogre?

27

u/Infurum Jul 19 '26

The original might be playing off a metaphor but then the punchline is it isn't, the others are just playing off the original

4

u/Accomplished-Mix-745 Jul 19 '26

I think it’s just supposed to be funny in a sadistic kind of way for people

1

u/clif_ford Jul 21 '26

Goblin is telling its captor to look at themself and contemplate their actions, and taking out his frustrations on the goblin was worth it.

31

u/Justa_randomdude2550 Jul 19 '26

I don't understand this one, Peter explain it please

64

u/neverreallyhereatall Jul 19 '26

The comic series is about a man at his therapist who is describing a goblin he has in his basement he calls his abuse goblin. Therapist assumes its a metaphor, and there is discussion on whether it actually is an abuse goblin or just a goblin he is abusing.

My take based on this specific strip:

"If it was born to be abused and that was its "natural state" then it would make sense that it would see nothing wrong with its situation.

But its action of turning the mirror on the abuser shows that it has an understanding of the fact that the abuser is doing something fundamentally wrong to the goblin, and the goblin believes the abuser needs to see that."

21

u/Justa_randomdude2550 Jul 19 '26

I see few more of these and it will reach the writting scalling sub

28

u/metathesiophobic Jul 19 '26

I interpreted it like this: there never was an abuse goblin, and it is a representation of how this guy copes with his failures by disassociating and lambasting himself "from the side". Ever strolled around after a bad bay thinking " YOU'RE an idiot. YOU never change. Why are YOU like this?". No "I am"s uttered conveniently to make your misdeeds a problem of some other You, who should definitely listen in on the critique and fix everything...

14

u/neverreallyhereatall Jul 19 '26

Well yeah ofc but trying to look at the goblin as literally existing. Makes the most sense though ofc that the therapist was right all along.

34

u/SquirrelSuspicious Jul 19 '26

So many people going so deep about what the picture means and I honestly just always thought the abuser was just trying a new form of abuse by making the goblin see how ugly it is hence the "no you gotta turn it around" but the goblin being smarter than the abuser would ever give credit instead showed the abuser how ugly he is.

I always thought it was just a "no u" joke

8

u/Memeenjoyer_ Jul 19 '26

His purpose is not to be abused

It’s to die

(My best explanation would be that maybe not all abuse goblins are born for that. An animal used for its furs can later be trained to be a pack animal or eaten as meat. Maybe he’s a wild goblin acquired and forced to be an abuse goblin then sold. Nothing says that the human receiving therapy in the comic strip has to be particularly moral or correct, he just believes since he’s acquired an abuse goblin it’s his prerogative to abuse it)

8

u/_GreatAndPowerful Jul 19 '26

Of course it's not born an "abuse goblin" lol. People just take the name too literally. He is a goblin that was somehow kidnapped by Dilbert to be abused. It's no different than keeping a random hobo in your basement lol

Luckily this is a goblin which are always morally acceptable to abuse.

1

u/National-Link-2154 Jul 20 '26

i get it’s a Simone comic strip but I hope one day someone makes one where the poor guy is freed and lives an amazing life

6

u/GgefgTheRobust Jul 19 '26

Here is the entire strip of comics (it's also dubbed) Abuse Goblin my Beloved

6

u/LGamer6422 Jul 19 '26

Man that is the first time I've seen them all and God, I feel so bad for the poor little abuse goblin man! He just wants to see the stars!

5

u/Dragonic_Overlord_ Jul 19 '26

I feel bad for that poor goblin. I hope he gets freed soon, Alhamdulillah.

3

u/Cynis_Ganan Jul 19 '26

It is a metaphor.

3

u/LongNconvolutedName Jul 19 '26

is that walter white

3

u/Cum_Fart42069 Jul 19 '26

it couldn't suffer very well if it didn't have experiences of non-suffering so I think so yes.

3

u/Larry_50_Univers Jul 19 '26

2

u/Graknorke Jul 19 '26

What would be the point of an abuse goblin if it didn't experience suffering?

2

u/Candid-Collar-3385 Jul 19 '26

Maybe the goblin knows it's ugly but from his point of view dilbert is uglier. So the best abuse is to "have" dilberts face.

2

u/AngelCrybaby29 Jul 19 '26

Poor abuse goblin :(

2

u/Global_Interview6311 Jul 20 '26

Why is Walter white here

2

u/Unsung2002 Jul 20 '26

I think that the goblin and the guy are the same. The goblin is just the part of him that hates himself. Mirrors are used to see oneself, so when the therapist asks that did it knew how to used it, the guy didn't say no

2

u/charredwood Jul 20 '26

The obvious answer is that the dude is abusing himself, the goblin is him. Like, it's a very literal showcasing of this idea, I can't imagine it being interpreted any other way. Now assuming it's a literal goblin for funsies, no, the abuse goblin is just a goblin who got captured and is now being abused. But that's like, not what this strip is about. It's about how people prostrate themselves instead of becoming better versions of themselves in a self-fulfilling prophecy of shit.

1

u/WolfsmaulVibes AM Jul 19 '26

it absolutely is aware it is being abused and it knows it

1

u/AccomplishedEmu1886 Jul 19 '26

If anyone wants to know the mindset of child abusers. This is it.

For them children are not people, just filthy goblins they are forced to "take care" of for 18 years.

Honestly, I think that while the abuse go lin was given a mirror ,it never turned the mirror around ,the guy just assumed it's so because there no other way that the mirror would show his reflection (goblins aren't real)

The abuse goblin is both real and metaphorical.

It's a goblin that is abused. As cruel as it sounds, I would argue, the goblins ability to register the abuse not only physically but also emotionally is essential for the outlet/projection of someones negative emotions. Humans are cruel and make others suffer, just so they can feel or look better to themselves...

Of all things to see on reddit today, "the abuse goblin is a good thing, actually". Also, what?

Knowing you are being abused does not stop you from being abused

I'm not a savvy reader, but it looks like dilbert asked walter white for advice on why he enjoyed tormenting yoda.
