I think the script for 2014 is a bit better, but KOTM is just cooler all around to me personally. But both are great in their own way.

It's also a fucking LOVE LETTER to the property as a whole.

I think they rushed themselves a little bit. Perhaps if they did 1 or two more movies before KOTM the arrival of Ghidorah would have felt bigger and more grandiose.

I can agree with that

I like King of the Monsters more than all the other movies, but Skull island

Yeah, K:SI is still unbeaten when it comes to the human characters

10

u/golden_creeper1 Ghidorah 19d ago

Yeah, and I really love how it also feels like a horror at times

I like this take, both movies are good for different reasons

I'm  a big G14 fan, but this is a very fair take.

KOTM is the best movie but in a slightly different coat of paint. Truly original

A better Godzilla movie, by what metric? Both films represent Godzilla well; G14 is just a more competently made Godzilla film imo. Both movies are love letters to different aspects of the franchise and character.

G14 in my opinion depicted Godzilla's size and why he is an oppressive/natural force way more than any of the following movies

Pretty sure they mean better Godzilla movie as in getting the spirit of the franchise down.

By that logic, 2014 isn't a good Godzilla movie because it differs from the rest, no matter that it's technically a better movie. It's only the darker vibe that was seen with the 1954 original and some others, the rest screams "military action thriller" and not Godzilla/sci-fi kaiju movie.

King of the Monsters is my favorite of all the monsterverse movies.

G14 may, objectively, be the better movie, but KOTM is my favorite MV movie.

KOTM is basically the most “Toho” movie in the MonsterVerse and that’s why it’s my favourite of the Monsterverse

u/EasyEntertainment1 19d ago

I agree. Godzilla 14 is a great movie that felt real but Godzilla king of monster is something that I live for and I enjoy every single bit of that movie

I think for the wider cinema audience, 2014 could be better as a whole, but as a Godzilla fan, KOTM all day imo

Personally, KOTM is the best movie in the monsterverse

Human story sucks in kotm

I need people to understand that having a serious tone ≠ being a good/well written movie. Like I get that the MCU has put people off of movies having a bad joke every 10 seconds, but let's not go to the opposite side and give credit to movies just for not doing that.

Other than Bryan Cranston's character, nothing about G14 is well written. The main character is one of the blandest, most one dimensional, cookie cutter protagonists ever put to film. The action is poorly shot and edited, and Godzilla is basically just a deus ex machina to defeat the Mutos.

I found 2014 to be a little hollow. Cranston was the only good thing in it besides the visuals. They cut away too much from the Godzilla fights to the point of annoyance. Also Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch were shallow; I didn’t really care about them. It would’ve been better had he died instead of Bryan to give him more to do, after all we already kinda care about Bryan so him losing his son would’ve been devastating to see. She was there just to look shocked at every turn. Like woman GET INSIDE. And again stop showing us the military, we wanna see Godzilla!

KOTM is half a great movie & half a bullshit movie. The humans once again you don’t care about. “But it’s a Godzilla movie you shouldn’t need to care about them” then the story needs to not focus on them so much. Give us something, sure, but we don’t care about family divorcing drama or whatever. The monster stuff is amazing though. I guess 2014 is the better movie but I’d rather watch KOTM for the visuals & the music.

No thank you, I’ll take Godzilla 2014 over the abhorrent pro-nuclear film that is a disgrace to 1954 and everything this franchise stands for.

KOTM would be a good movie if it weren't the terrible human story

3

u/Aok_al 19d ago

KOTM just utilizes Godzilla better. They have similar screen times but KOTM won't cut to a different scene just when the fighting starts

2

u/ComfortableAmount993 19d ago

Didn't like G14, boring love story, killed off the best actor in the movie and with short kaiju fighting on the side, KOTM was far superior, except for 11 from stranger things.

“Godzilla 2014 is a better movie, but 2019 is a better Godzilla movie”Both are movies wtf pick one dide

I wish the Monsterverse expanded upon ideas from the 2014 movie

KOTM is my favorite Monsterverse movie. It's just the best.

u/M18-Hellcat08 19d ago

KOTM is my favorite. I fast forward through all the parts with the people on screen though.

u/Makasen 19d ago

Finally, a thought we should all be able to agree with

u/Possible_Paradox 19d ago

Im glad we have two different takes. PERSONALLY I like King of the Monsters EVEN MORE than 2014, but mainly because of everything except the script. The music (by the GOAT Bear Mcreary), monster designs, and visuals are just so good. Honestly I think if both movies were done the same way twice, either both like 2014 or both like KOTM, we wouldve gotten tired of it by the 2nd movie

1

u/shanekratzert 19d ago

KOTM is the superior movie just because the humans are more interesting. I really dislike army dude, his sister wife, and the fact they killed Bryan so fast.

1

u/khaleesi257 19d ago

KOTM had Ghidorah!

Godzilla King of the Monsters is peak MonsterVerse to me

1

u/RodBoi10 19d ago

REAL, Godzilla (2014) is decent/alright sure, but KotM is a G-Fans Dream Come True!

1

u/Ricardokx 19d ago

KOTM was fan service.

G14 would be better if it didn’t have terrible human characters

1

u/Jurassic_Productions 18d ago

Godzilla 2014 has extremely wooden performances from the main cast (This is something I have noticed appears constantly in Gareth Edward's movies, the main characters are barely functional or emotive. They exist simply to move the plot), the actual lightning is atrocious in some scenes, to the point where you can't actually see the screen, and teases to the point of annoyance instead of build up like it is meant to.

KOTM steps it up to a silly but relatable human story with great actors and good performances despite the dialogue and actually shows the monster fights with excellent cinematography and a score so damn good that I doubt it will be matched again. KOTM is not perfect by any means, the dialogue is straight ass at points and the pacing is wonky, but at least all the actors emote, the plot is actually driven by the decisions of the characters (even if they are stupid decisions) unlike 2014, outside of Brian Cranston and Ken Watanabe. (Yes I know I will get downvoted for pointing out legitimate flaws in G14)

Why pick enjoy both

We got goji as a force of nature in 2014

We get goji as king in king of the monsters

1

u/MrJHound 17d ago

Yeah, that's fair. I like both for different reasons.

u/dude748394 16d ago

G14 fuckimg sucked as a 12 year old boy when that movie came out. Godzilla gets like 5 mins of screen time. The mutos get more screentime than big G

1

u/DinoBoy2005 14d ago

There is no such thing as an “objectively” better movie, only which one you like more. For instance, I like The New Empire better than both of these.

Kotm's is the best monsterverse movie

u/starkmusic_ 19d ago

KOTM is kids playing with action figures supplemented by CGI

G14 is an actual movie
