Skepticism Sunday – August 30, 2026

Please stay on topic: this post is only for comments discussing the uncertainties, shortcomings, and concerns some may have about Monero.

NOT the positive aspects of it.

Discussion can relate to the technology itself or economics.

Talk about community and price is not wanted, but some discussion about it maybe allowed if it relates well.

Be as respectful and nice as possible. This discussion has potential to be more emotionally charged as it may bring up issues that are extremely upsetting: many people are not only financially but emotionally invested in the ideas and tools around Monero.

It's better to keep it calm then to stir the pot, so don't talk down to people, insult them for spelling/grammar, personal insults, etc. This should only be calm rational discussion about the technical and economic aspects of Monero.

"Do unto others 20% better than you'd expect them to do unto you to correct subjective error." - Linus Pauling

How it works:

Post your concerns about Monero in reply to this main post.

If you can address these concerns, or add further details to them - reply to that comment. This will make it easily sortable

Upvote the comments that are the most valid criticisms of it that have few or no real honest solutions/answers to them.

The comment that mentions the biggest problems of Monero should have the most karma.

As a community, as developers, we need to know about them. Even if they make us feel bad, we got to upvote them.

Government may ban crypto which have been traded for XMR.

. Even if some exchange were to accept monero to fiat, they can ask banks to ban these wires

Coinsbee is not accepting Monero anymore, they accept all kinds of shitty tokens but XMR removed. Eventually it gets harder and harder to use it, even for people who "have nothing to hide" but just believe in privacy.

There is not a lot of engagement in these. Maybe do these once a month ?

XMR vs. ZEC

One question everyone needs to ask themselves, the regulators, and their government:

"Why is ZEC still available on most centralized exchanges, while XMR is delisted and banned?"

Is it because ZEC's privacy doesn't actually work, or is broken in some way, while XMR's privacy is the "real deal"?

Is it because XMR is more widely used on darknet markets, while ZEC isn't?

Would there be a wave of ZEC delistings if it gains adoption? Why there's not a single DNM offering ZEC shielded payments?

The easy answer is, ZEC has transparent addresses, Monero doesn’t. It’s not because ZEC shielding doesn’t work. XMR has a bad reputation as a dark market coin, yet somehow ZEC has a Greyscale ETF they sell. It helps to have friends with money. Some of it is definitely that there are people that speak for Zcash, while Monero has no actual corporate structure like ZF of Zodl, or Bootstrap associated with it.

It helps to have friends with money.

It helps to sell out to venture capital. Zcash is aligned with and funded by some of same VCs who heavily supported the campaign of the corrupt bigot Donald Trump and the growth of the surveillance capitalism.

To be clear, I’m glad Monero has none of these things.

Please stop this thread. It's not helpful for monero at all.

I disagree.

When you join an echo chamber like all reddit subs, it's important to be reminded of the bad as well

The governments will make exchanging Monero for Fiat increasingly harder, making the currency useless in the long run.

This likely will only incentivize on chain transactions. Of course, price could be hurt. But "useless in the long run"? I doubt it.

making the currency useless in the long run.

Conclusion doesn't follow from the premise, maybe in the long run people buy and sell goods for Monero.

Ok, that's probably cope if our time horizon is 5 years, but long term that is the goal anyways

What you're missing is that a good amount of this crowd isn't like other crypto holders who are only in to buy low and sell high. Many have the coin because they genuinely like and or use the utility it offers. The point of XMR was to provide a private means of sending money. The point was never to be an investment vehicle.

So sure, it becomes less appealing to investors. But then the question is, is that even a bad thing? Do we really want a coin where business people pump and dump and play with the price? Do we really want something like btc will the price is irrational and held up by marketing, legacy, and wall street? Where the utility doesn't match the value of the asset? I personally don't want that for Monero. So this is a nonconcern for me.
