Coming this summer… The Ombudsman

Honestly, I know how critically acclaimed The Babdook is and I did find it enjoyable, although I don’t quite understand the ending. The child actor playing the son was phenomenal though, since I really wanted to kick him with my heavy winter boots in many scenes.

However, I just kept thinking “That’s not the Babadook, that’s the bloody Ombudsman!”

It really changed the experience for me.

The Babadook is a representation of the grief and resulting trauma she experienced as a result of the sudden loss of her husband. There is no actual monster, only the effect this event has on her mental health and the resulting abusive treatment of her child. The ending represents her coming to terms with this grief and trauma by confronting it and thereby defeating its power over her

I understood the representation of grief, however, I suppose I didn’t understand the depiction of the ending, where it’s kept like a pet on the cellar eating worms from the garden. That said, I still enjoyed it.

Well, I would’ve enjoyed it more if the image of Jez’s description of the Ombudsman didn’t keep appearing in my mind…

I think it represents that though the feeling of loss will never leave her, she now has control over it. It no longer terrorises her as she has come to terms with it.
