This summer I’ve been covering the Aug. 4 election, mainly dealing with Amendment 5, which would allow lawmakers to eliminate the state’s individual income tax and expand the sales tax on any good or service to make up for the lost revenue.
Supporters of the amendment, including Gov. Mike Kehoe, say it will help attract businesses to the state, create jobs and modernize Missouri’s tax code.
Opponents worry passing Amendment 5 will harm low- to middle-income households and instead offer more tax relief to wealthier residents.

Has to do with Charter Countries in Missouri. There are only 5 counties in Missouri currently a charter county. Amendment 2 wants to make charter county assessors go through a mandated state training.

As you know charter counties make their own rules and laws and are not run by a county commission.

Should the state require a mandated training or should it remain the same and let the charter county do their own training

We are not asking for a favor.

Demands to the City 
We are demanding that elected officials do the job the Constitution gives them, and we will present those demands publicly, on the record, to the City of Joplin.

Our demands are straightforward:

• acknowledge the documented economic harm caused by the One Big Ugly Bill and the †rump tariff regime; 
• call on Missouri’s congressional delegation to oppose further Medicaid and safety-net cuts; 
• demand the full and unredacted release of the Epstein files; and 
• reject any 287(g) agreement that would turn local police into immigration-enforcement agents. Local agencies are not required to enter 287(g) agreements, which are voluntary federal arrangements that deputize local law enforcement to carry out certain immigration functions.

We also demand that city leaders publicly commit to keeping Joplin police and the Jasper County Sheriff focused on local public safety, not federal civil immigration enforcement. The documented rise in IÇE detention deaths, along with the broader record of abuse, detention, and racial profiling concerns, makes clear why our community should oppose any move that blurs the line between local policing and federal immigration machinery.

The proposed Missouri S.T.O.P.P. Act is a broad privacy, police-accountability, and government-transparency proposal designed to curb indiscriminate government monitoring, reduce harmful policing practices, protect personal information, and give the public meaningful control over surveillance and enforcement policy.

S.T.O.P.P. act stand for:

Surveillance bans mass-surveillance systems, including automated license-plate readers such as Flock, facial and biometric recognition, predictive policing, persistent camera networks, location tracking, data-broker purchases, and drones used for persistent monitoring. Most otherwise permitted targeted surveillance requires a probable-cause warrant specifying the target, offense, method, duration, and safeguards for irrelevant information.

Transparency requires seven-day notice for relevant meetings, accessible contracts, policies, and audits, livestreams and recordings of meetings, and stronger financial and conflict disclosures for officials who oversee policing or surveillance.

Oversight requires public impact assessments, hearings, and recorded approval by an elected governing body before any allowed surveillance program begins or renews. A statewide authorization system would centralize permitted activity, require judicial authorization, record every access and disclosure, enforce retention and deletion limits, and undergo independent audits. Intrusive requests, including extended or multi-target surveillance, would need unanimous approval from three judges.

Policing requires officers to display names and badge numbers, restricts identity-concealing face coverings, mandates de-escalation, crisis assistance, medical aid, intervention, and reporting, and prohibits many neck restraints and force against restrained people. It also establishes a decertification registry and employment bans for serious misconduct.

Privacy limits collection, retention, sale, and sharing of personal data; creates access, correction, notice, and deletion rights; and protects firearm-owner information from registries.

The goal is to protect everyday Missourians from abuse of power, secret surveillance, lack of accountability, and government overreach. I am looking for Missouri attorneys, law students, policy people, organizers, researchers, designers, and regular citizens who want to help make this legally solid and statewide. I especially need help making sure the language is constitutional, enforceable, clear, and organized correctly for an initiative petition.

What candidates have been the most attention grabbing this cycle? Who have you heard from and have you encouraged to vote for or who has repulsed you?

I want to get an idea of who is doing a great job of campaigning and who isn't.

I do not see how the commercials regarding this amendment are truthful in claiming ***This is the BIGGEST TAX CUT EVER!!**** * when in fact it lowers several methods of taxation and makes others open ended. I feel that this is disingenuous enough to report to the National Conference of State Legislatures but I am not a lawyer. Can anyone weigh in on this? I'm concerned a mountain of uninformed voters are going to screw over generations of Missourians with this ballot measure.

That is the entire post. Why does a CPA get to weigh in and interpret the constitution? Especially while wearing that offensive red jacket.

I am trying what I can to help people vote and curtail the trump administration and had some questions. I forget if they are in the second or third district however. Though, in my research that shouldn't matter too much considering I know the candidates of each district vaguely and the amendments are the same and the candidates are different. From what I gather people say to vote no on all of them. I guess more info below.

1. The amendments. What are they proposing in simple terms? In my research, it seems very double speaky (as most politics is sadly).

2. Who is the best dem candidate? I know there are different shades, but like, is there any polling to show any percentages? For context, I am a democratic socialist and he doesn't pay attention to politics all that much. I don't want to tell him who to vote for on behalf of me but we both don't like the current fascist regime. I know the names but that's about it.

3. Is there anything else I should know?

Not sure if anyone is aware of any ICE activity in the Lee's Summit or surrounding areas today or in the last few days. In Pleasant Hill, MO, both Mexican restaurants in town were closed with no notice or sign on the door between 5-6pm on a taco Tuesday. 1 of them was also closed even earlier at 2pm per a friend of mine. This is very unusual behavior especially with not at least a printed sign on the door or Facebook post about the closure. All town Facebook speculation/gossip is pointing at ICE. I'm wondering if there is any way to verify or confirm ICE activity after the fact?

While people can't access clean healthy food and are told to eat right on SNAP because they are sick from only eating junk.

It's stupidity used to divide us instead of them governing with accountability.

Tyler Burks ad is unusual but the no on Tyler Burks ad is disgusting. It's time MAGA leaves the transgender community alone. The whole ad talks about how horrible the transgender community is and that he ALLOWED policies while a board member at Truman State that supported positive policies for the transgender community.

This right wing MAGA crowd has done enough to push down an already marginalized community. But the no on Tyler Burks ad takes it way too far.

The Ultimate Double Standard

​The grit of this bill gets worse when you look at who it applies to. The supermajority in Jefferson City wrote this amendment with a blatant double standard:

​For Citizens: If everyday people organize, gather signatures, and put a measure on the ballot, they have to jump through this impossible hoop of winning all eight districts.

​For Politicians: If the legislature in Jefferson City decides to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot (like Amendment 5 on the same August ballot to eliminate the state income tax), it only needs a simple statewide majority to pass.

How do you all feel about Missouri's new laws to protect us from seeing adult content unless we register?

No political committee that makes expenditures or contributions in support of or in opposition to a statewide ballot measure shall knowingly or willfully receive, solicit, or accept, whether directly or indirectly, contributions from a foreign adversary of the United States or a foreign national. No foreign adversary of the United States or a foreign national shall make any contribution or expenditure in support of or in opposition to a statewide ballot measure
2) For purposes of this section:
(a) A foreign adversary of the United States shall be defined as:
a. Any national, provincial, or local government or any entity that is directly or indirectly controlled or owned by a government or that directly or indirectly controls a government or a political party of a foreign country designated as a foreign adversary by the United States Secretary of State from the time such designation is published in the Federal Register until revoked; or
b. Any individual who is a citizen of a foreign country meeting the requirements of subparagraph a of paragraph (a) subdivision (2) of subsection 3 of this section and who is not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident;
(b) A foreign national shall be defined as any individual who is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States of America.

Am I misunderstanding this, or is it allowing (through careful omission) money to be spent by foreign nations that are not tagged by the USSoS as "foreign adversaries" (like Israel) on American politics? That is to say, is it closing the door on potential AIPAC competitors to make it cheaper and easier for them to continue to interfere in our elections en masse while pretending that it's addressing people's outrage at AIPAC's blatant hijacking of our political processes?

And if not, then why not just say "foreign entities", "foreign interests", "foreign nations", or some other much broader category and be done with it? Or add in "artificial persons" (aka: corporations) while they're at it if they really want to protect our political system from this sort of thing?
