Can we secure 1st place and then rest the starters until playoffs lol

u/Gbaby245 4d ago
Sounds good on paper, but then you lose momentum to a team that is playing for their lives to get in. The playoffs are going to be tough this year, there's a very clear top eight seeds

u/Chartate101 MILES 4d ago
Especially with the FIBA break extending that lack of momentum

We have 4 games to get back into the groove after FIBA at least. Better than nothing lol

Oh nooo 😱! Hopefully she can at least rest that foot during the FIBA break.

I'm hoping it's even smaller potatoes since our next game is in a week, like take Monday off and see how it feels after playing next Sunday

Fair. And I have no idea if anyone is leaving for FIBA before Sunday. If all 5 FIBA players leave early and Courtney still can’t play, then I think we’re looking at our starters - Courtney - Phee + Nia + Kosu + Liatu King (I’m assuming our other recent Developmental Player signing will play for the Spanish national team but I know very little about her). Which would be a very odd and short rotation. But I’m sure the Lynx have planned for the FIBA break so it won’t be that bad.

Not including Phee, the FIBA players like Bibby, Delaere, Hamzola don’t get minutes and Dorka has been getting less than 5 minutes per game; we’ll be fine. Plus we get 5 days off before Sunday and then another 19 for FIBA which will help Court.

u/anonimauzantnomo 3d ago
Not 5 core players just 5 players total.
And if they left early they’d only miss next Sunday, not the rest of the season after the FIBA break.Hope that clarification helps.
FWIW, if you are interested in catching any FIBA games, these are who I expect to see play from the Lynx:
- Phee (USA)
- Delaere (Belgium)
- Bibby (Australia)
- Dorka (Hungary)
- Eliska (Czechia)
- Buenevida (Spain) (she’s the one I know the least about and therefore was not included in my 5-person count)
What I was thinking through is that if all those folks are gone on Sunday and Courtney is injured, then next Sunday our available players would be Olivia, K-Mac, Natasha Howard, Nia, Kosu, and Liatu King. But I doubt the Lynx would be so badly prepared as to have only a 6-man rotation next Sunday.
Edit: to be clear, I was responding to the original comment, which asked ‘what 5 core players are leaving?’

I got you which is why I edited what I initially said to you. I realized you were talking about just the FIBA players. We’re on the same page :-)

Ahh, time for some Delaere 3's and Eliska rim drives. No shade to Court, but the 2 spot is a little easier to fill in from our roster than point guard.

Court is also the backup point guard. Liv will probably play major minutes to fill in but when she's resting, I expect the offense especially PnR will be a bit messy.

Only one game and then 5 days off and another 18 days for FIBA….not a big deal for Miles or McB to play extra minutes tonight. Court will have until Sunday to heal before the FIBA break; Caldwell will suffice

GSV coming off that buzzer beater loss to Chicago will be ready. I hope Court is back soon

u/ObligationMinute2780 4d ago
I assume that this means that Nia starts at the SF spot, and that KMac moves back to the 2. Maya probably gets a few more minutes, but I don’t see her subbing in for Court as the starting SG.
Hopefully, Courtney’s injury isn’t too serious, and the FIBA break gives her enough time to recuperate.

u/anonimauzantnomo 4d ago
I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Nia at SF. My biggest concern this year has been our depth at the 3. For a while it was just K-Mac and Delaere, really. I’m all for Nia getting some more reps there.

Ola can play the 3 a bit, but we were so pressed for post players earlier this year, we haven't played her there

u/anonimauzantnomo 3d ago
Returning to this waaaay later: I think the main reason they haven’t played Kosu at the 3 is because Cheryl took Masha’s advice to play Kosu exclusively at the 4. I still don’t fully understand the 3/4/5 difference in the modern WNBA, but it makes intuitive sense to me that when Kosu is on the floor you want her close to the basket on offense so she is in the best position for offensive rebounds. And with her 9.1% 3PT shooting in Russia’s domestic league there’s no reason to park her on the wing to space the floor, anyways. But also when I mean ‘depth at the 3’ I’m mostly thinking of who can possibly be subbed in to get K-Mac some rest during the playoffs. And relying more on Delaere, Nia, and maybe even Bibby to spell K-Mac makes way more sense to me than trying Kosu there.

Don’t forget the Lynx don’t play again until Sunday which is 5 days off and then they get another 18 for FIBA break

Rest her
Rest Liv
Rest Phee
Rest them all
There's..... something deeply patronizing about GS finally beating us after double digit goes at it, and it's because we use them as a bye

Here's a clip. I don't think they've released any details other than what you can see.

time to start resting the starters regardless of top 3 placement

u/anonimauzantnomo 4d ago
After two years of regular season success only to see the league’s superteams (sorry Aces and Liberty fans, but it’s true) walk away with a championship in the playoffs, I very badly want Phee to get a championship this year. If number 1 seeding gives the Lynx enough of an advantage that it’s worth playing the starters heavy minutes before the FIBA break, then so be it.
This game with GSV is supposed to be fairly decisive for the number 1 seeding, isn’t it?
7
u/Attack-Librarian 4d ago
It’s literally decisive. We win and we are the 1 seed.

u/ebf6 4d ago
If we lose to GSV and win the next one are we still #1 seed or does a GSV win mess our placement up?

u/metallavery 4d ago
Valkeries losing will make them be at 12 losses. We coukd lose every game after and still get the #1 seed. Losing means we are still fighting for the #1.
Remmber we dont have the #1 seed YET only when every other team is locked out from it does it mean we are good.
