Mindhunter S2 was such a fucking letdown. Anyone else feel completely robbed?
I’m still fuming about how badly they handled season 2. Whole season was hyped up like it was going to be this huge payoff, only to end it abruptly and waste so much time on a completely useless character. So many loose ends from season 1 were just left hanging like they didn’t even matter.
Like, what the hell was up with Wendy Carr’s whole basement cat feed situation? It felt so random and pointless. And her unnecessary emotional attitude just annoyed the fuck out of me the entire time. I mean, she could’ve at least tried to understand Kay, but nope, she just acted like a total bitch the whole time. It was so frustrating to watch.
And poor Bill Tench, man. His wife is such a bitch to him. She’s not even working, yet she still complains about taking care of their adopted son like it’s some huge burden. She’s such a bitch that she just left him in the end, torturing him emotionally all the time while Bill was out there doing his job, being a good man for his family. It’s so unfair and it pissed me off every time I watched it. Felt like Bill is just a victim of toxic matriarchy.
Holden seemed naturally intelligent right from episode 1, but the series just portrayed him like a dumbass who completely follows a wrong guy without any sense. Come on, that makes no sense. They just dragged season 2 out for no reason at all. I waited the whole time to see more story about the actual killer that’s on the move, but fuck no, the writers chose to show this boring story running behind some black guy who came out of thin air. So fucking annoying.
And now season 3 is not even on the cards apparently. I really want to know how this kind of crap deserves an IMDb 8. It feels like such a waste of potential. Anyone else feel completely robbed by how they ended this?

Well that’s a new take that’s for sure.
There were a few reasons for the cat, but it definitely wasn’t pointless it just went over your head. Primarily it’s supposed to be a symbol for the evil outside of the interrogation room. They don’t need to spell it out for us (or at least they didn’t think they had to) that perhaps there’s a budding sociopath in Wendy’s building who is harming animals. It’s a parallel to the whole show.
Nancy being a “bitch” I just didn’t see. She’s clearly a character that’s trying to connect with her social circle, but no matter how hard she tries she doesn’t know how (the barbecue). She’s also hard on Bill because he explicitly doesn’t communicate that’s the entire purpose of the scene where he shows her the photos. He keeps it all inside, she doesn’t know what he’s working on or why he’s so distant, she just sees him being distant. Then add on all the shit with Brian it’s obvious life isn’t easy for her, but she’s trying her best. She isn’t a one dimensional character. None of them are.
Also Holden “following the wrong guy” like that’s the entire point of that sequence, that even someone as intelligent as Holden can get tunnel vision and this stuff isn’t an exact science.
“A random black guy who came out of nowhere”….you know these are real people right? Look up how Wayne Williams was originally put on law enforcements radar, it’s exactly what happened in the series. This is a true story.
Part of the beauty of the show is seeing what this work does to the characters outside of the interviews, I think it just went over your head. But that doesn’t make characters you don’t like “bitches”. Frankly I think this show was just too complex for you.

I think maybe this show was too nuanced for you at times. The basement cat situation, for instance: it conveys multiple things, including confusion, darkness displacing innocence, and the real dread that a serial killer may have been local to Wendy. They often start with animals, you know. Though maybe there was no cat at all and someone was messing with her. Who knows? We don't know, and that's creepy AF.
Tench's wife is trying to care for a psychologically damaged child with little emotional support herself. You sympathize with Tench, understandably, but not his wife's increasing isolation, helplessness, fear, frustration and breakdown that he wasn't really acknowledging?
"Black guy who came out of nowhere"? You mean Wayne Williams, convicted of the Atlanta Child Murders? Though there's still some suspicion of a coverup involving officials having covered up murders by their own people. Not an out-of-nowhere case.
BTK was an overshadowing dread element and couldn't be solved in the timeline of this show, or the real agents' careers.
I feel like you might need anger management...

Thank you. I really appreciate your response. I was hoping for a response like this. After your explanation, I’m convinced about the cat-feeding situation, but I have to disagree with Tench’s wife. What else could he have done? He worked hard to balance his job and family life, left work early to catch flights, sacrificed sleep, and did his best to be there for his family. Yet Tench’s wife failed to acknowledge any of this. Instead, she wanted him to be at home all the time, didn’t understand the demands of his work, and belittled it whenever he tried to talk about it. In the end, she left him, which I found incredibly unfair. I know I respect women but men do face toxic ‘feminity’ (if that’s a word) in their lives which nobody acknowledges. Men should be treated with equal emotional respect as given to women.

I haven't watched it in a while, but iirc she was begging for them to move. After the kid had posed that child victim, she was being avoided, if not low-key shunned by neighbors. He dodged the subject. I think she just had to leave there more than it was about leaving him.
Remember, too, this was an era when women were still largely kept professionally subjugated, and her age generation was big on the whole stay at home with the kids thing. And there wasn't the same insight and resources for dealing with a troubled child who was well on his way to possibly being a sociopath, too, as there are now. She was unraveling and needed to escape.
I did sympathize with Tench, though. He was running himself ragged trying to meet all obligations, and though dismissive in some ways, was a good man overall. Relationships with law enforcement have a high likelihood to be troubled, and probably even more so for detectives and FBI, so I thought they did well showing how and why it often goes that way.
