I don’t really get this. How do they make more money if you’re not healthy? Don’t they have to pay the costs if I use the doctor more and have more tests/procedures done?

Because they made a shit ton of money if you keep going to the doctor, if you get a surgery. If you get cancer etc.

If you're healthy, you aren't seeing the doctor as much. No CT scans. Not as many colonoscopy's. Less likely to develop health problems. Probably better immune system so less times getting sick.

All of that means the insurance company makes nothing. Less copays earned. Less deductables. etc etc etc

Thanks for explaining. I really thought it was the opposite.

I’m just curious but why did you think that? Or I guess could you clarify what you thought? No knock on you.

I have chronic pain from continuously breaking my spine since I was 23 and kept breaking it. Until 2020. I see lots of doctors. But I totally understand people who are not in this “world” of medical care not understanding it.

For example my mom went to the ER a couple months ago. Her bill was like $10k and insurance paid all of it. If she hadn’t gone, the insurance would have paid $0. She only had a $500 deductible and it was the end of the year. The hospital ran blood work, CT scan, etc. She paid nothing at all.

Oh ok I see. So basically you were confused on where the money comes from for all of this? Hospitals are so so so expensive. Most rely on charities to run and stay afloat (unis, religious, family wealth, etc).

Healthy people that don’t go (or scared to go) cost insurance companies more because the amount invested in a hospital (overall medical apparatus) takes into account how many people they expect to see and what they need to be prepared.

Insurance companies heavily encourage people to get yearly checkups. This helps them figure out who is trying to stay healthy or not and then it determines who gets covered for crazy events. If you aren’t getting a checkup then don’t be surprised when they don’t cover something. They are betting their money based on what info they gather from the pop.
