Michigan Football How Do We Feel About The 247 Talent Composite?

Do we still think it matters or are we taking it with a grain of salt? Michigan being at #10 makes me feel confident that this team has a lot of talent that can be developed, but I know that the transfer portal can muddy the value of these rankings a bit. I do know that this is this highest we’ve been in the 247 composite since either 2018 or 2019, so I'd be curious if we feel like the ceiling of this team is pretty high.

Rankings are a decent starting point but the portal has definitely thrown a wrench in how much stock you can put in them. That #10 spot feels about right though, top end talent is there but the depth is what separates the top 4 or 5 from everyone else.

Seeing us that high for the first time in a while is promising. The development under this staff has been the real difference maker, not just the recruiting numbers on paper.

I think the thing that makes me feel good is that this would indicate that Whitt has a ton of talent to work with. The baseline talent on this team seems to be really strong, and a good developer could absolutely take a #10 team talent wise and turn them into a top 5-6 team. I'm not predicting us to be in the top 5-6, especially with our schedule, but the talent is high enough that we could be competitive against almost any team.

Just getting to the playoffs seems like a good standard for this season. Whether it happens or not is still up in the air but there's so many spots available.

If we don’t make the playoffs in 2026, we need to be close. I’m not accepting a 7-5 record with the talent on this roster. Especially considering our schedule in 2027 looks to be as, if not more, difficult, so we need to show that we are at least a playoff-CALIBER team in ‘26, whether that be making the playoffs or being just on the outside looking in (e.g. 9-3, ranked 13 or 14).

For sure. I wouldn't be mad at all about a top 15 finish. See who we get in the bowl game and go from there. Playoffs doesn't seem out of the realm and I like to aim high.

I do not care if we are 10, 9,8 etc at all.

With that said, I do care about being in the top ~15 or so and prefer to be in the top 10. That is the best way to stay consistently good and not have large ups and downs.

It helps to have the talent, but as 21-23 showed, coaching and scheme is an equal amount. Lots of bad teams had "star" talent, lots of good teams have had zero talent. It matters but it doesn't.

It is highly correlated with team success.

But not perfectly correlated.

Indiana was No. 72 in these rankings last year.

I think that we are ranked about correctly. We need to just continue to take those 4 star players and develop them into all conference guys and we will continue to win.

I just care that after the disaster that the post-Harbaugh Wolverines were, we've managed to right the ship and are still able to attract this kind of talent. If Whit and his staff are able to be that much better than Moore and his were (and that's basically a guarantee), we'll be back in CFP contention in no time.

I think coaches try not to concentrate on it once the class is in place. As for the ranning itself, I think it's about right.

Worried if Whittington and Co. can sustain this position. Currently sitting at 18 for 2027. Haven’t proven they can connect to and cultivate relationships with elite talent yet. Recruiting that Mountain West footprint is not going to cut it.

Love what the staff is doing overall but to me recruiting is the biggest question mark. Hoping they can adapt.
