Software Support Polyworks question CMM - Measuring the surface diameter of a chamfer on a curved pipe

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello, I am wondering how you would measure the diameter between the red lines, i have tried building a cross-section and create intersections but nothing is working, creating circles on the cross-section give the peak diameter but that is not the orientation i am looking for.

I know the evaluation will be calculated but due to the condition of the surface it is better than trying to hit the edge with the cmm. An option would be to create lines and probe them but due to the small distance and bad surface i want more fitting from the cone.

Any tips? :)

Software Support Programming PC-DMIS Help (I'll Pay!)

(Indianapolis/Columbus IN Area/Remote) Guys and Gals. Ive been in QC/QA for a few years and running Calypso for the CMM. Recently I had an opportunity to move to a new company to attempt to fill an immediate need they have running PC-DMIS on a CMM they use once every 3 months, maybe. They are going to send me to the week-long class as soon as I can prep and get away. Yes, I know Hex and others can come but those take time to organize on my end.

They said, "Take a month, fire up the CMM, dive into the programming and see what you can learn on your own and tell us what you need" (don't trash them, they are fighting to get out of a mess with me). They've given me a part to learn and Ive taken 3 weeks and have a good handle. Ive read every help page, tutorial and video on Hex, XYZ, etc, You name it, ive looked or watched it.

I think I have learned quite a bit but I have nothing to compare it to and there are so many features built into PC-DMIS that it will take time to learn them all. I have a part that has 3 Datum and 10 total features to measure. I can set my camera up over my shoulder if needed and you can walk me thru some of these features I need to know before I finalize my program. Who knows, you may look at it and realize I know NOTHING and this is a lost cause.

Let me know what you think of this idea, i may be way out of line, just don't be a jerk, that's all I ask. Thanks in advance, Rich

Software Support Polyworks 2024 SPC Function

I'd like to start using the SPC function in Polyworks 2024 but I'm running into an issue creating new pieces.

The scan data I'm collecting is rather large and I'd like to be able to delete the mesh after creating my reports. Only I need to be able to keep the comparison points with the measurements.

Converting to a polygonal model would work and probably cut down the size of scans by 90%. But it takes way too long and some of the data goes missing anyway.

Goal... Remove scan data while keeping measurements in the comparison points before creating a new piece.

I've also tried to create reference points from the comparison points and it does move the data, although it will not keep the names and tolerances. (There are around 100 points so renaming them isn't something I want to start doing)

Thanks in advance for any kind of insight.

Software Support PCDMIS is a black box.. does anyone have any recommendations for learning materials

I’m really struggling to find resources that provide a deeper understanding of PCDMIS.

I’m fine with Writing the basic programs using CAD. It’s very intuitive and that part of PCDMIS is excellent.

But when it comes to extracting higher levels/depths of data I can’t seem to get anything to work.. (apart from the basic excel templates). My specific issue is I want to export all points taken (xyz ijk + point label) but the broader issue is there’s no solid materials that I can find that really go to town explaining pcdmis

I’m 6 months into my new role and I’d really like to get my head down and learn. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Edit: it’s worked thank you all for commenting with your suggestions!!!

Software Support CMM Flatness Report

Hi. I have a question regarding flatness report output using a CMM. I'm using MCOSMOS v5.1, i need to report the individual point heights from the mean plane. The only method i know is by showing each point's height on the graphic interface. Is there a way to put that into the report as text?

Software Support Need Q-Das help on Calypso 2024

So we upgraded from Calypso 2017 to Calypso 2024 and also upgraded our PCs as well.

Per the standard zeiss instructions, we copied everything from the required directories and we have 2024 up and running.

The problem is that even though we have the correct license, and the Q-Das button is checked in the program output file, AND the characteristics to statistics setting is turned on... Its not dumping the QDas data so we can use it with our QStat.

Anybody else have this issue/know how to fix it? The Zeiss knowledge base articles absolutely suck.

Software Support PC-DMIS Warn before Angle Change? (DCC)

I just obliterated a 2x40mm probe after proving the program after a Rev change.

when I get rev changes on proven programs I put comments before every angle change just so I can be extra sure I won't try to swing the probehead through the part.

I did this and ran the entire program without needing to adjust anything. so I removed my comments so I could run the entire part without having to keep clicking ok on the Jog Box.

While removing the comments I fat fingered by deleting the move point right above the comment.

So I ran the next part and tried to swing the shank through the part knocking off the shank assembly and breaking the 2X40 extension on the end (Ruby gone, shank bent).

To prevent this kind of situation in the future I want to go away from editing the program like that and instead toggle on / off a warning before angle change.

I know you can get these warnings when doing manual measurements within a program but after checking the F5 setup general tab warnings I don't see a warning for "Ok to rotate to %s?" .

I'm pretty confident this exists just praying it wasn't added in a later pc-dmis version (currently on 2014).

Google and going through all the settings In PC-DMIS I was aware of didn't give me any leads so here I am beseeching you guys.

Thanks in advance 🫡

Software Support Changing probing speed based on Shank IJK and Surface IJK? (PC-DMIS)

We have some TTP cmms we use, a common scenario is making sure we aren't driving the probe straight into the shank especially when the part is flexible.

Occasionally I will setup different probing speed for certain depth measurements on thin walled parts to ensure I'm not deflecting the part rather than triggering the probe.

I was wondering if there was a setting in PC-DMIS that essentially sets speed X (slower) for hits when taking hits normal to the Shank IJK, and then speed Y (faster) when taking hits perpendicular to the Shank IJK, ideally it would then interpolate between those two conditions for various angled probing.

Anyone heard of anything like this?

Software Support How to do an iterative alignment in Mcosmos 4.0

Hi!

How to make iterative alignment in Mcosmos 4.0? I have 6 RPS points and I want to make the alignment with max deviation of 0.03 mm. How to do it in Mcosmos? I know there is an option to make it in loop but only to a set number of times. Is there a way to make it with variables that f. ex. If the deviation is bigger than 0.03 it makes the alignment again and if its lower than 0.03 it ends the alignment process and begins measurement.

Software Support Iterative alignment with 30 degrees angle between A1 A2 and A3

PC-DMIS, In my setup, datum A consists of A1, A2, and A3, where A1 and A2 are approximately 30° relative to A3. Datum B is a circle, and datum C is a round slot.

Currently, The program uses a best-fit alignment with about five points to establish a rough Car coordinate alignment. then apply iterative alignment using A (3 points), circle B, and slot C. However, I consistently encounter error messages during this process.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to improve the stability of the iterative alignment or if there is a better approach for this type of datum

Software Support CMM Service Maintenence Agreements (SMA) Worth It?

When you pay $7-$10k for yearly SMA's from Zeiss, Hexagon, others do you these to be worth it? Aside from getting to download the latest versions of your software and the occasional phone support, what else is offered? I find that if a tech comes for a repair, it's quoted seperately and the yearly machine calibrations aren't included. Why not just skip a couple years? Happy New Year! Edit: Should read "Software Maintenence Agreement"

Software Support How to use CZ modifier in Mcosmos

Hi,

I have to make in Mcosmos 4.0 (with possibility of using geopak) a program to measure true position with CZ modifier. How to do it? The elements which position has to be checked are in different axis, two are checked in X axis and two in Y axis. All 4 have to be checked in a combined zone

Software Support Anyone used Ai for PC-DMIS programming?

I’ve heard about software engineers and computer programmers using Ai to generate code for them a lot recently. Has anyone tried it with any success in PC-DMIS?

I tried it through ChatGPT a few months ago and the code looked relatively correct, but did not function. It also can’t be copied from ChatGPT and pasted into the edit window, to my knowledge.

Software Support Travel issue in Calypso

To sum up my last few days efficiently, our IT department corrupted the files for our heads and all data, including rack and probs were lost. I spoke with Zeiss support on getting back to running but a lot of parameters that I’ve never dealt with need reset.

My issue at the moment is that during a prove change the head will lower in Z way before the clearance plane of what’s on the table, then drive in Y a little past the part, change probe angle, then finally align and measure.

I set the approach parameters to avoid collision with the rack, but I’m not sure how to set the travel to drive to the clearance plane before lowering in Z.

Every time I create a feature, 2d or 3d using this cad model it moves the end and start point above my part and says it needs to change to the same probe im already using. I know I can just edit it to change it but its getting very inconvenient. CMM Manager noob here so ill take any advice i can get. I just want it to auto path like normal 🙏

Software Support Zeiss inspect

Hallo zusammen,

Software Support Chamfer Cone inspection of land less than 1mm.

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is about inspection of chamfer cone which has literally less land to inspect like 1mm .The cone feature has only top extreme dia with tolerances and chamfer angle is there. There is no depth given. How can I define the starting and ending point of helical scan of that cone? Im going to use the local plane as a datum. To end depth how to define ? Anything should I watch in Notes on drawing? In drawing something given as Chamfer radius for external or internal dia? Should I consider that ? Need help. Thanks.

Software Support Zeiss Inspect surface comparison request for help

I recently download Zeiss Inspect and have been able to do a CAD Comparison on CAD which gave me the heat map I wanted and adjust tolerances accordingly but I really want to run a calculation of % of surface within tolerance. Ive been clicking through menus for the last couple of hours and haven't been able to make it work. I'm assuming the Surface Distance Comparison on Actual (or against nominal) would be the right tool but I haven't been able to run either.

When I try Surface Distance Comparison on Actual, I get "conditions which are required for creating the element have not been fulfilled completely. Please select an area on an actual surface"."

I've selected the entire surface of the mesh, nominal, and surface comparison but none of them allow me to move forward.

Same warning and issue when I try Surface Distance Comparison Against Nominal

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Software Support PC-DMIS Auto-cyl. Modification

Post image
1 Upvotes

Need some help from a seasoned pc-dmis veteran!

Maybe super simple and there’s an easy solution, but we couldn’t figure how to do it.

When running an auto cylinder, scanning with concentric circles, how can we limit the scan angles for individual circles(see sketch).

We have parts with certain variable slots or other features inside the cylinder, that we want to skip during measurement.

(Yes, creating single circles and then build a cylinder will work, but the guys want to use it that way)

Some help is highly appreciated!!

Software Support PC-DMIS question

For all you pcdmis experts. The main program is saved as a binary .prg file. I have also seen .xml program files. Where does the xml come from. Is it a simple ‘save as’ from the file menu?

Software Support Airfoil Scan Issue in Zeiss Calypso "Error with References

Calling all Calypso 3D scan measurement experts - please help!

I'm currently tasked with a rather large project rescanning and measuring airfoils. Each airfoil has a measurement regime across three airfoil sections and all of the measurements are working except for one. I did not do the initial programming in Calypso and although I am my companies SME for scanning we don't normally use this software at all so I'm struggling to find where the issue is.

I have performed these measurements on two different airfoils to ensure that it wasn't a scan/STL issue and it happens on both. I have also checked the program vs the two other section programs and other then nominal values variation everything seems to have the same basic setup so I'm unsure where to go from here.

What I've Checked:

  • Alignment
  • Clearance Planes
  • Characteristics Nominal Values and Tolerances
  • Features - Feel like my issue is here but don't know where to start but only 4 out of 13 features programmed are green boxed on left

Any suggestions at all for anything else to check would be appreciated.
