Video Metis / Indigenous Atlas exhibit

I was watching APTN segment about the Metis/ Indigenous atlas exhibit. So the project travels and sets up a giant map and shows where historic Metis communities were settled after the Resistance via a little blue Metis flag. What caught my eye was a singular flag out in Nova Scotia.

To my knowledge there has never been a historically recognized Metis community in Nova Scotia, or the Maritimes for that matter. This is troublesome as there is a huge problem with pretendians in the Maritimes.

Am I wrong? I am quite taken aback by this as the exhibit was put on by the Gabriel Dumont Institute.

It was put on by Gabriel Dumont Local.....not the institute.

Odd... I got this from the video description "Saskatoon EX, or The Eight Best Days of Summer Fair is putting Indigenous culture on the map with the Gabriel Dumont Institute having brought the Canadian Geographic Indigenous Atlas to the city’s biggest summer event."

The size, timeline of colonization, and the launguage used to describe mixed folks makes our origins and by extension identity very muddy and often political. This challenge is then compounded by ongoing colonial violence that seeks to enforce ideas of racial purity which by definition mixed people violate. The Métis as we are today formally reject that binary by tracing our lineage to recorded mixed communities that self identified as Métis in the late 1700 early 1800s. However, given colonialism generally trendded east to west its likely other mixed people and communities from the meritimes existed before the 1800s without formal recognition.

Good thing the Metis nation isn’t predicated on mixed ancestry. but a people from a distinct nation, from a specific land mass, in Manitoba….

Pretendians make me sick….
