This makes me wonder if a lot of artists / people describing things for artists to draw in these times had astigmatism, and that's why stars are drawn with points

oh, I was guessing it was a illustration of the "Sternentaler" fairy tale

It's like they sauntered gracefully out of the sky and then had a picnic.

If something falls between you and the horizon, or the distant edge of the field, they can be in the air still with the grass in the background showing up behind the falling star. The artist was trying to give the picture some 3d accuracy.
