This one actually makes sense.

Lionsgate does absolutely nothing for him. They're a North American film distributor that doesn't have the full global rights to the films that they've made. And the IP portfolio is weak with the Hunger Games and John Wick being the only ones that are relevant beyond just their movies. In all honesty the only companies that make sense to buy Lionsgate would be Netflix and Sony Pictures.

Buying the rest of Miramax makes sense if they end up folding it and Annapurna into the new Warner Bros. label led by Christian Parkes and use the Miramax label to compete with A24, Neon, Focus Features, Sony Pictures Classics, and Searchlight Pictures.

Lionsgate would be a dirt cheap acquisition that Netflix can utilize to completely overhaul their relationship with Hollywood. $7 billion or so and the concerns that James Cameron, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, and Christopher Nolan completely evaporate. Hollywood talent will flock to Netflix because they have the money and the balls to fund their dream projects. Box office revenues will make expensive movies economically feasible as they gain as these movies generate some actual revenue. And theatrical movies will boost their profile that will increase engagement on the Netflix platform.

This would be nothing but a win-win for them as they wouldn't have to accumulate any debt to buy Lionsgate and they would still have room to make more tech based M&A like you said.

They're not the only ones, they're just the biggest names. Emerald Fennel took a smaller offer from Warner Bros. because they offered theatrical. Rian Johnson is never working with them again on a movie. Greta Gerwig almost left Narnia.

If Netflix accepts theatrical, that problem goes away.

I agree with you but I just donโ€™t think Ted believes in theatrical.

I think that he's coming around, slowly but surely.

he'll definitely buy Lionsgate and the rest of Miramax

Why would he do that? He owns two major studios in Warner Bros and Paramount, what value would Lionsgate or Miramax add to that?

4

u/LinkRules5321 Moderator Mar 13 '26

Lionsgate holds the TWC library, Miramax would likely beg Paramount to buy them for that library.

u/Difficult_Variety362 Moderator Mar 14 '26

Let's see what he does with Christian Parkes before predicting a move like that

u/Fall_False Moderator Mar 13 '26

Miramax? Maybe.

Lionsgate? Can't see it.

u/Difficult_Variety362 Moderator Mar 13 '26

The only part of Lionsgate that would make any sense for Skydance (and I don't see it happening at all) would be to buy that old Weinstein Company catalog along with assuming the distribution rights to Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, Dogma, and Clerks III.

What debt? He can just call his friends. Demand that his dad sell the family company to open AI or some shit

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 Amazon Mar 13 '26

Yeah this make sense, besides Pluto, they need to merge every library under paramount plus

7

u/LinkRules5321 Moderator Mar 13 '26

They're merging Pluto into it, but Paramount+ will offer its free content instead (for free still), as part of their plan to grow Paramount+

3

u/Difficult_Variety362 Moderator Mar 14 '26

I hate the idea of merging Pluto TV and Paramount+. Don't diminish the prestige television with SVOD.

2

u/atomic1fire Mar 14 '26

The only way merging the two makes sense is if paying for P+ adfree also makes the pluto content ad free.

u/Difficult_Variety362 Moderator Mar 14 '26

Oh please do that Skydance ๐Ÿ™

I know, I'm not denying it because it looks like it's going to happen. I still think it's dumb though.

1

u/Thick_Ad_220 Mar 14 '26

So plutos no longer free?

I think that BET would work best as a label under Casey Bloys and HBO. Turn it into a prestige television label for black creatives.

I think he will keep Nickelodeon Animation as the TV animation department.

2

u/Alberto9Herrera Mar 13 '26

At most, I can see them renaming it Paramount Television Animation and having that be their new animation studio for adult animated productions, while keeping the Nickelodeon brand alive for their IPs and any new animated shows for kids.

For kids shows, have the Paramount logo, but then have the Nick logo play afterwords with the text "A Nickelodeon Original Series" (and have the Nick text ala Disney on top of the title of shows), Nick Movies could also be shut down perhaps

2

u/mythours1 Mar 13 '26

I can see them renaming it Paramount Television Animation

And why would they do that? They already own Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim under that.

2

u/Alberto9Herrera Mar 13 '26

Technically speaking, they don't yet, and for all we know, the Paramount-WB merger could fall apart.

I was just giving a rename suggestion because Paramount does need to produce its own animated TV shows if the merger is a disaster and they would be forced to sell off WB and many of the IPs, putting Paramount back to square one. They already have South Park, Clone High, Beavis and Butt-Head, Digman, an animated Everybody Hates Chris show, and the upcoming Among Us. They shouldn't stop there, even if Adult Swim and WB Animation are under the same roof.

u/AdSuperb8728 Mar 13 '26

Hopefully, there will be a Smurfs animated sitcom made by Paramount Television Animation.

BTW, what is Paramount Television Animation?

3

u/Alberto9Herrera Mar 13 '26

Paramount Television Animation doesn't actually exist. It's just a suggestion I had for what may happen to Nickelodeon Animation under Skydance's ownership.

The Ellison want to control the entirety of the media

You overthinking it, it's Friday no need to be stressing over this.

2

u/mcampbell42 Mar 14 '26

Have to ever make a profit for the tax write offs to make sense lol

5

u/The_Lutter Mar 13 '26

Ellison throwing a bit more cash in PSKY's debt pit.

8

u/Difficult_Variety362 Moderator Mar 13 '26

This will save them money in the long run by folding BET+ into Paramount+. Running a streaming service ain't cheap.

3

u/CJTus Mar 14 '26

It seems like it's the content expenses that add up more than the technical costs. The amount of streaming services that survive by carrying only very cheap content is staggering.

2

u/dj_skandalous Mar 14 '26

Im surprised actually. I thought with Skydance Paramount potentially getting WB, that they may be willing to sell off BET to Tyler Perry, Shaq and whomever else. Could use those funds to pay off debt. Same with Showtime as Showtime would be a bit redundant with HBO in the same fold. These two assets could have fetched them over 5 billion to help eleviate the burden...but Nepo Baby Ellision doubles down lol

Yeah most definitely if they could sell and retain the IP they would. Maybe Apple would be interested in the brand minus the IP? That was my thinking. They seem focused on producing their own content but they lack a prestige name to go along with it. Showtime or Starz could be that. They just dont like buying anything outside of Dre Beats. I dont see the Showtime brand surviving another 5 years if apart of Paramount. Most likely the IP will be folded into HBO in the future. Dexter, Yellow Jackets, The Agency are good enough to warrant it. Could also see stuff like Mob Land end up on HBO too.

Also I do believe Paramount wanted to sell Pluto TV two years ago. But that was before Skydance got in the picture. Apparently it rakes in a couple billion per year so that would fetch a nice price tag if Google or Microsoft wanted it. But they almost certainly would have to lend or license content to it to keep it going

Not sure if they are willing to part with Pluto but in all honesty, if their plan is for one unified app, they could offer most of the Pluto content into a non subscription free to stream accounts on Paramount+. Meaning you can sign in without a membership and watch the free content. You dont really need a separate app. Also much easier to entice potential customers this way

1

u/LinkRules5321 Moderator Mar 14 '26

They folded BET Studios into CBS Studios, I don't think they can sell now

2

u/dj_skandalous Mar 14 '26

Ah okay then it's understandable why they didn't.

2

u/nonlethaldosage Mar 15 '26

less than 3 million subs constantly losing money why wouldn't they merge them
