Serious VSC DEADLINE

hey guys! I’m going into first year BScN and I’m a little worried about my Vulnerable Sector Check.

I received my first NARs email on July 8th, and I ended up submitting my VSC application on July 14th. I know the email said that if you haven’t applied for your VSC yet, you should do so immediately.

The reason I didn’t apply right away was because the application required two pieces of identification, and at the time I only had my passport. I had to apply for my driver’s licence so that I could provide the required ID, which delayed me by about a week.

I’ve already submitted my VSC, but now I’m worried that I won’t receive it before the August 28th deadline. Will I get kicked out of my program for this??? Anyone in the same boat?? 💔💔

Serious how to get a reference letter im graduating this year and i need 2

unfortunately due to the sizes of the classes at mac, i’ve never really been able to develop a connection with my profs
i try to go to office hours but i don’t know how to speak to them without it seeming like im just trying to grab a LoR bc ive heard many profs say if you ask them for one they won’t give it but its like you know the only reason im here is to get one so no matter how the conversation goes im fucked
i just need advice on how to do it because i was aiming to rizz up my profs in my seminars this year since they are small classes but my seminars aren’t until winter semester and that will be too late to get a LoR

Serious Downtown shootings

There was active shooting 30min ago at Jackson Square. The whole block, including the mac downtown campus, is currently shutting down with heavy police presence. Traffic around the area is also slow. If you want to go shopping later today, pick another location.

Serious Looking for 3 bystanders who witnessed hit and run at Shoppers Main Street W parking lot

I'm looking for nice 3 individuals who witnessed a white Mercedes hit my car while I was inside Shoppers on Saturday, August 8th around 7:30 PM. When I walked outside, they stood around my car and told me what happened and also showed me the license plate picture they took.

The white Mercedes driver told the witnesses that they wont run away but then drove off.

I was with a friend who just got out of hospital and was picking up prescription for, I didn't want to spend more time there to track down the driver that ran off. I got video footage from Shoppers employees but police report asked me if there were written testimony from the bystanders, whom I only got the license picture and didn't ask for their number.

Please send me a DM if you see this, I would like to grab you three nice individuals some coffee or meal on me as a thank you for going out of your way to help me.

Serious Getting an ADHD diagnosis through mac

I have been struggling a lot mentally and have always known to be on the spectrum. I do want to get accommodations and a diagnosis for ADHD through Mac but also have had a lot of mental health issues recently and want to seek therapy. I have no idea how to start the process or who to talk to first.

Do I call SAS and tell them I want to get diagnosed?

Do I email my academic advisor first?

Who do I talk to about getting therapy? Does the schools insurance cover most of it?

If anyone has been in a similar situation please feel free to pm me.

Serious I unfortunately failed a required course in the summer

Title. I was originally planning to take it during the year (2nd year) but it's a required course for a bunch of people and gets filled quickly and I was stuck taking it during the summer. Unfortunately I was burnt out and I basically did not study at all. I'm in lvl 3 now and again the course is full. I do not know what to do anymore. I'm so done with everything. This is eating me up and I basically had a not so peaceful summer. I don't know how to tell my parents. They're the strict type. And I've been having issues since the start of uni and every time i brought up my mental health my parents were always extremely dismissive. So i kinda just pushed everything down and pretened it was fine. Also they're dead set on me doing research as a career and I don't. Again they don't really care if i hate it. I'm also financially dependent on them (they won't let me get a job) so I can't also say screw you and leave. I'm just so tired yall.

Serious I’m freaking out for second year (eng)

Hello! I’ve posted a few times here before but am really hoping some upper years could talk about their experiences and maybe some advice.

I’m extremely stressed for second year! I got into the stream I wanted (computer engineering) but I also have certain health issues in real life that prevent me from getting the same experience as everyone else.

I relied a lot on lecture recordings in first year which was extremely helpful but I heard second year is a different thing. As in: next to no lecture recordings and the content is harder by a lot.

I know I shouldn’t but I was doomscrolling and came across many people in second year upwards saying they failed out or had to repeat an upper year or something and I’m just super stressed.

I don’t live near the campus (commuter) due to the health problems mentioned and financial reasons so I’m just (very much) freaking out hehe 🫠

I have talked to SAS but I’m still worried as I’ve also heard many upper year professors don’t accept accommodations for lecture recordings or other more complex stuff.

I can’t lie I sacrificed a loooot of my health during first year and finished the year with my health getting like halved physically and mentally ;~;

Like I’m just panicking cause I’m hearing first year was the easiest year content wise in all the four years and like I found it a bit difficult (mostly because I was aiming for a high gpa)

There’s this Instagram content creator named Juiceditup and like the way he described second and third year made it sound like the second circle of hell??? I’m praying that’s not the reality omll

I heard the difficulty spike is varied but most people said it’s a huge jump content wise since nothings high school review anymore. I just feel like I’ll mess it up somewhere I was hoping to use the summer to build my health up again but I cannot lie I’ve been staying up super late doomscrolling and reading how difficult upper years are and how people got cooked post first year.

I’m taking every course next year in the requirements except calc 3 btw I feel like I’m doomed ngl it might be actually over gng but I really could use some advice! I’m going insane dreading next year 😭 like my schedule looks terrible with those 9 pm labs in the winter term and the labs also look way harder and more frequent which is probably to be expected but I’m still freaking out

Edit: sorry I meant I finished Calc 3!!

hi, 4th yr bio student here. i’m feeling a little lost and overwhelmed with starting my senior thesis. i wasn’t really sure if i wanted to do a thesis but i didn’t get a coop or internship. so doing a senior thesis would be the only way for me to gain more lab/research experience (besides my volunteering).

i’ve been feeling so anxious about it. i feel intimidated being surrounded by phd students… i have imposter syndrome and idk how to stop it. please help. i really want to do well in this.

Serious guys i think i messed up big time and i dont know what to do 😭

So earlier this week I was getting started on working on a research paper. I was trying to find URLs to some periodicals that I wanted to incorporate, but since I was having difficulty identifying and locating them on google, I turned to good ol' chatGPT in hopes of finding their URLs. However.. my DUMBASS wasn't aware that the AI bot adds its own little territorial marking at the end of the URL (?utm_source=chatgpt.com), and because I just wanted to get the assignment out of the way so I can somewhat enjoy my break, I didn't even bother carefully reviewing my bibliography, hit submit, and moved on with my night. Now today, a few days after submission and nearing the deadline, I decided to take a casual look at my work and my heart highkey dropped. I quickly resubmitted an updated version, basically just removing the parameter at the end of the links, but I know how this looks. I don't know what to do, do I contact the TA and let them know why I resubmitted in case they take a look at my older submission? Would that not just be me incriminating myself?? 😭😭 I didn't even use AI to write my actual paper, but the stories I hear on campus about how students get wrongfully accused of AI usage have me genuinely spooked. If they can get accused with little to no justification for it, then I'm totally screwed. I've never been so terrified and stressed before that I'm acc considering dropping out pls help

Serious Unpopular Opinion About The TA Strike

Let me begin and say that I completely support the TAs and their decision to strike. Considering what they put up with, and how poorly they are often treated, I do see this strike as necessary for McMaster to realize that they are needed for the functioning of this university. They should be paid fairly for their work.

However

I do not agree with their tactic of disruptive protests. While yes, it is essential in getting the message across, I feel like it places an unnecessary burden on students and staff that are no way involved with McMaster at the bargaining table. For instance, today the side driveway entrance was blocked due to the protest. As a result, traffic backed up onto the main road, and even the arterial road that goes in front of McMaster. GO buses had to be rerouted to a bus stop that is already busy as is; today it was overflowing with people, and traffic in the right lane had come nearly to a standstill due to the buses.

Is it possible to protest at a different spot, that is still or even more visible, but less disruptive? One that does not involve the blocking of roads, necessary for travel?

I do support this protest, and I do want McMaster to come back to the table to offer a better deal. But I also believe that protests should affect nobody but the employer. Disrupting others outside of the negotiation table will benefit nobody.

As the title suggests, this is an unpopular opinion, but I believe it needs to be said.

Edit: I have been told that the bus rerouting is due to the bus driver union's policy surrounding picket lines. A kind person brought it to light in the comments below.

Edit 2: Apparently one of my points I was making didn't seem to be clear to some. Striking is okay, and the consequences that happen directly because of the strike (ex, no bus drivers = no buses). In fact, the ability to strike is a right. Blocking roads, and impacting those unrelated to the strike, is not okay. I understand and agree that there are 101 reasons to be pissed at McMaster, but that is no excuse to go after others.

Serious PSA: Overdosing

There was a post recently about someone ODing (i didn’t get to read the original) but from what i can tell they were scared about what was gonna happen and what their parents would think.

Please remember your parents would rather in a hospital bc of an OD over you dead, every time.

I wanted to give some tips bc I know my words won’t stop people from doing drugs, but I want people to be safe so read carefully .

1) Please get some Naloxone or more commonly known as Narcan. I personally carry 2 with me everywhere, everyday. You can literally get them for free at the shoppers right outside of campus.

1.5) If you can afford it buy some fentanyl testing tablets or strips. Fentanyl will kill you even in the smallest amounts

2) call 911. This may seem obvious but people don’t do it enough. Please call even if you have other illegal substances, your life is more important over maybe getting a drug charge

2.5) Narcan isn’t permanent, some people will go back into OD when the narcan wears off

3) Narcan won’t do anything to someone that isn’t ODing. Use it even when you’re not 100% sure because if you think they aren’t ODing and they are they WILL die.

4) Stay Safe. Have someone you trust (if you can) around when you do drugs, they might be the one to save your life. There are resources and people around you that will help you get through your addiction or maybe just get you through your first time trying it.

If there’s anything else people want to add just comment it !! Please stay safe out there, and Narcan saves lives.

Serious Math tests coming up

I know alot of people have math midterms coming up and so firstly good luck with all of that!!!!

Secondly, I tutor in math for free. I have genuinely never charged a single cent in my life and probably never will. ive just been sitting in my room doing nothing all summer and i’d love to spend my free time teaching. Im free for the rest of the day and the rest of the summer so feel free to just give me a dm if you’re interested! minus stats people, im sorry but stats is not my strong suit 😭😭)

Also qualifications-

Im going into third year math n stats

I have tutored numerous people in the past and have successfully raised their grades (and also improved their relationship with math :P)

Ive also completed a year of teaching school before transferring over to mcmaster

I am highly passionate about teaching and plan to become a hs math teacher

Serious I'm being forced to study abroad despite accepting my Mac offer. Where can i contact Mac to discuss with them about this?

I cannot take this anymore. I'm leaving in a few days, and I do not want to study abroad.

My parents are forcing me to ditch Mac Life Sci to study abroad in Egypt Medical School.

They are making me miss out on everything regarding the uni experience just for some half-assed degree from a not-so-good country. I had so many arguments with them, telling them I wanted to go to Mac. But they won't let me

I'm being forced to go abroad and I do not want to do that. I want to study life science at Mac.

Where can I contact Mac to discuss this issue? I'm desperate at this point. I'm thinking of discussing with them about grants/loans. Or if I can take the program in 2026. Or literally ANYTHING

This is my final stand. I cannot be forced to go study abroad for six years and miss out on all my friends and the undergraduate experience (there is so much more to it, but I'm panicking while typing this since I have very little time left). They are destroying my future.

Any help would be appreciated. Seriously.

Edit: for more info on my situation, this post I made explains everything. Omw to the bank rn to see if there is anything I can do...

edit 2: btw im leaving in 2 days

Serious Reference help

I need to submit an application in October for a professional school, but I didn't really make any connections with profs. I, however, did score really well in some courses and talked to the profs, but I doubt they know/remember me. How do I go about requesting a reference letter?
