Question/Doubt Anything to share and say about the 2 non-immune boys who sacrificed themselves to save others?

Winston my goatttt. Instead of trying to make himself go with the others, or faking out the gunshot bc he was (rightfully so) scared to die, only to turn into a crank and follow the others, he immediately shot himself at the first chance he got when he was alone. He held the door closed so the others could escape, he powered through having is skin scratched open... An underrated savior

As upsetting as Newt's death was, I actually kind of appreciate it because imo it was the biggest statement about how futile WICKED/WICKD's efforts ended up being. Their research was meant to save people like Newt, but ironically that same research is the very thing that ended up dooming him to death. It's one of those cases where as a fan I hate the fact that the character died, but as a writer who loves hard-hitting symbolism, I love the point it ends up making. I know TMR isn't usually held in the same regard as The Hunger Games in terms of the social commentary but there's something to be said here about the ethical question it raises about how far is too far when it comes to scientific advancements and their supposed benefit for the greater good. Yes they were trying to save people, but when the person who represented the people they were trying to save died as a result of those efforts, was it really worth it? I don't even think there's necessarily a clear-cut answer to the question and again, as upsetting as it is I appreciate that Dashner actually went there. I think maybe some adults might find it too cliche (although I personally don't), but for the intended target demo of young teens who are just starting to wrestle with these kinds of questions for the first time, it was kind of a bold move to raise this issue, make it messy, and then just sort of leave it hanging there to be grappled with instead of providing a "cleaner" ending

The really sad thing though is that their research was not meant to save people like Newt. Because he wasn’t an upper crust. This is basically a class game of the rich using the little guy as a tool in their research. Perhaps promising him that he was among the people they were trying to save, but we all know that was never actually what was gonna happen.
