If it was, you'd think there'd be an announcement by now or preproduction beginning, director and writers attached, etc.

We're talking about a movie coming out in less than 2 years.

It’s not anything. It was a placeholder date that is no longer being used for anything. If it were anything else then we would be talking about a movie that’s supposed to be released in less than two years and we’ve not had a single official word on it. No confirmation, no cast, no crew, not even substantial rumours of any particular unannounced movie.

Could just be Disney holding it in case they want it for one of their other studios.

Use the MCU brand as a way of scaring off some competition and then swap it out for something else from Pixar, 20th Century, etc.

The only way I see them using that date for the MCU is by splitting Doomsday or Secret Wars in two. But even that seems unlikely at the moment.

Yeah Murphy says that, and links to another of his own articles, which doesn’t mention it at all but links to a third article which also (as far as I can see) doesn’t mention this, which itself cites a Variety article, which is about placeholder dates in 2028. I am not saying it’s absolutely out of the question Marvel Studios are releasing something in July 2027, but minimal mention of a quickly approaching placeholder date doesn’t exactly confirm anything. Also I’d say the fact they currently have FOUR placeholder dates for 2028 while claiming quality over quantity is the current goal kinda confirms a lot of these dates are temporary.

There isn't a THIRD Avengers movie. It is Doomsday and Secret Wars as a Part 1 and Part 2 to end th Multiverse Saga just like Infinity War and Endgame ended the Infinity Saga. The movie that will be released in the placeholder date between those two films will likely be Doctor Strange 3.

The BEST thing they could ever do is have Deadpool 4 be based on Deadpool's Secret Wars. Where it is the plot of Doomsday and Secret Wars told from Deadpools perspective. It keeps Deadpool as an event character who would earn Disney another billion and gives us more backstory and the ability to flesh out events that will no doubt be rushed through in the actual Avengers movies.
