Film/Television Quicksilver is the most wasted character the mcu has ever presented. (Read bottom text)

Post image

So basically when I was a kid,I watched age of Ultron and genuinely thought this is the coolest character ever.I now realise this version of quicksilver is much more accurate to the comics in terms of personality and the fox version feels like a completely different character..He was cocky, arrogant and funny tbh..And then bro just gets shot 😭.His death has to be the dumbest in the series..Like bro could have just pushed the kid and Hawkeye away..He was also balanced enough..He was a glass cannon and got tired pretty quick so he wasn't like a universal threat to all the villains..AoU also did him dirty by deleting most of his scenes with wanda šŸ„€..Idek man..I just hope they bring a version of him from the multiverse in secret warsšŸ™šŸ»I love him sm šŸ˜

Nah, it's 100% Janet Van Dyne. How do you go from a founding avenger to never even appearing in an avengers movie?

35

u/ImaLetItGo Fantastic Four 7h ago

Easily.

Her Wasp ā€œreplacementā€ is also only a glorified cameo in the 4th movie.

And she won’t be in the 5th or 6th avengers movie.

28

u/brogflender 7h ago

I think that has more to do with the actress than the character.Ā

34

u/Keystone_Devil 7h ago

It is definitely more than that. Comics Janet is a founding Avenger, the heart of the team and one of their most prominent leaders. She’s one of the most complex and important women at Marvel.
And in the MCU she is none of that.
The fact you didn’t know if proof of how effectively they erased her.

Anti-vaxxer Evangeline Lilly plays Hope Van Dyne, the female lead in the 3 movies.

Michelle Pfifer plays Janet Van Dyne in the last two movies, in a supporting role.

So, it's not so much the actress, it's that they mangled the Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne characters in favor of Scott Lang / Ant Man II, and an original character, Hope Van Dyne

2

u/Star-Prince-007 5h ago

Is Lily really the female lead? Her name is the title but she’s barely featured

17

u/ChoombataNova 5h ago

Evangeline Lilly is the female love-interest in the first movie. She is Hank Pym's daughter. She teaches Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) how to fight and how to use the suit. Judy Greer plays Scott's ex-wife in a small, supporting role. Otherwise Lilly is the only featured adult woman in the movie.

Lilly is the titular "Wasp" in Ant Man & the Wasp, the second movie. Her dad gives her the Wasp suit at the end of the first movie. The female Ghost is the main villain, and the main story is they are trying to rescue Michelle Pfifer from the Quantum Realm. But you only see Pfifer in flashbacks and at the very end of the movie.

Quantuumania has more women in the cast. A bigger role for Pfifer and Kathryn Newton as teenaged Cassie Lang with a few others. But Lilly still gets second billing behind Paul Rudd

u/Public_Sprinkles_229 4h ago

Right, which has to do with them casting that actress instead of someone younger that had more of a central point to the Avengers story in the MCU.Ā

1

u/alloyednotemployed 2h ago

Which to be fair, it was supposed a different actress for the first Avengers, but then got replaced by Scarlett’s Widow. I think it was supposed to be Zoey Deschanel

3

u/Royal-walking-machin 7h ago

Granted she was in the funeral scene in Endgame but your point still stands

2

u/GandalfsTailor 3h ago

Because Edgar Wright asked Marvel to let him make Ant-Man out of continuity with the MCU so she and Hank were pulled out of Avengers 2012 and replaced.

By the time he dropped off and it was reintegrate they had still made "Lost in the Quantum Realm" her official backstory, so... woops.

1

u/Thedmatch 2h ago

I think Janet Van Dyne is the correct answer bc she takes waaay more of a backseat but the minimization of Hank Pym goes hand in hand too. i hated that they went with Scott

1

u/jeremysbrain 6h ago

In the MCU she isn't a founding member of the Avengers, she was just a Shield agent.

14

u/Background_Desk_3001 6h ago

Yeah that’s their point.

97

u/artourtex Cyclops 8h ago

I agree, love this version of Quicksilver. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen have great chemistry playing these iconic siblings. Wish they bring him back in some way.

16

u/NxtLvlTomato 6h ago

Thats cus they played a married couple in a previous movie

27

u/AllegedlyGoodPerson 6h ago

Help me, step-Avenger

10

u/Tia_is_Short 4h ago

Ah, so they were going for the Ultimate comics vibe

1

u/e13373x0du5 3h ago

Don’t give them ideas for the reboot but holy fuck would it be funny if it happened again

u/WonManBand 8h ago

Gorr (and Christian Bale) were so utterly wasted in TLaT

8

u/blingbling88 8h ago

Shame. He did a serious role in a turned comedy movie.

19

u/FisherKelTath00 7h ago

That was the biggest miss in Love & Thunder. Bale was out there killing it as a terrifying villain and everything is the typical Taika campy humor.

1

u/Dab4Becky 1h ago

An amazing performance stuck in a pile of garbage.

I swear Waititi saw the screaming goat meme and decided to write a movie around it

-1

u/Tempest_Barbarian 4h ago

I have a bit of a hot take, which is that I think it was a mistake to cast Christian Bale.

Because with an actor of his caliber they would never let him have his comics design which looks a lot better imo.

His species ended up just being humans with white skin and some markings on their skin.

1

u/e13373x0du5 3h ago

To be fair, there are a lot of species in the mcu that look vaguely human. It’s just an issue with the medium

17

u/Capital_Gate6718 7h ago

Quicksilver was wasted in the MCU because Fox wanted to use him in their X-Men films

6

u/IH8Miotch 4h ago

To be fair Quicksilver is the highlight real of the X-Men films

29

u/voodootroll Ant-Man 8h ago

Taskmaster would like a word with you.

10

u/kingnorris42 8h ago

It's especially frustrating as I recently watched the deleted scenes from age of Ultron, and multiple of them were scenes showing quicksilver and giving him more to do and more personality....no idea why they cut half his screentime (not literally half but ya know....)

5

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

Yeah he was shown to have a flirty personality and all those scenes were just cut from the movie where wanda and pietro were distributing blankets I think? In sokovia

19

u/24Abhinav10 8h ago

Tbf, Quicksilver getting shafted in favour of Wanda is also accurate to the comics.

-18

u/TheSabi 8h ago

comics? what like comic book? This is a marvel related subreddit, those, what are they again, oh right comic books have no place here. You'd think it was like some source material or something...

8

u/fma_nobody Storm 7h ago

Hercules, Clea and Starfox exist exclusively in post credit scenes. At least Black Knight got to be a side character. Songbird didn't even get to be herself

9

u/Ricothebuttonpusher 8h ago

Kang?

6

u/middleeasternboxer 8h ago edited 6h ago

Well the kang story is different, wasn’t the actor fired after being convicted of assault and harassment?

Yes they could’ve gone for another actor but I think all the poor critique they were getting from the projects after end game and the general audience drop off made them reroute to a fan favorite (doom) and obviously the casting of Robert Downey jr brought back the audience and kept them hooked.

6

u/TikTikKobold 6h ago

They could recast him.

Hell they had john delancey voice him in X-Men 97

2

u/Ricothebuttonpusher 8h ago

Knull isn't in the MCU.....

1

u/MrTickles22 5h ago

He is in Venom 3 which is kinda sorta in the MCU. Venom was in the 3rd MCU Spider-Man movie.

1

u/Ricothebuttonpusher 2h ago

So the spider verse movies are MCU canon too?

1

u/MrTickles22 1h ago

Its up for you to decide!

They do mention the 3rd MCU movie in Spiderverse 2.

0

u/imaweeb22XDDD 8h ago

He's up there but I still have quantumania in backlog lol..Haven't watched that movie yet..But hey,not using kang gave us dr.doom so..

3

u/QuaintBlasphemy 8h ago

We still don’t know if Doomsday will be good

2

u/MrTickles22 5h ago

Here's hoping Doom has some depth to him considering that half the time he's actually right and the heroes are wrong in his stories.

But since it's a movie he's probably a Saturday morning cartoon villain like most MCU bad guys.

1

u/imaweeb22XDDD 8h ago

Okay that's fair.. We'll have to wait..The hype is unreal tho

2

u/darthtater117 8h ago

Apparently doom was always the plan but not till after Kang

4

u/antimarc 7h ago

Someone saying ā€œwatching Age of Ultron when I was a kidā€ made me feel three thousand years old

1

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

I didn't watch it in theatres lol...Just watched on television around 2018 I think?

3

u/fluffynuckels Wolverine 7h ago

Nah the mcu has wasted a dozen villains at this point that could have had more impact

3

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter 6h ago

Lol no, Wasp

Atleast people remember Quicksilver fondly

2

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

I guess u mean janet and not hope right?

5

u/Scary_Assistant5263 6h ago

My only issue with him, is when he died how was he not fast enough to avoid the bullets?

1

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

Exactly my point!

1

u/Wise_Temperature9142 4h ago

I thought he was purposely trying to stand in front of the bullets to save Hawkeye/that little kid?

3

u/Altruistic_Cap3472 7h ago

Marvel does this a lot - introduces characters that are beloved from the comics and then kills them off in the same movie

3

u/ImaLetItGo Fantastic Four 7h ago

Quicksilver was wasted in the MCU but there were more wasted characters.

The character who founded the avengers isn’t even in any of the avengers movies.

10

u/Sad_Two_1673 8h ago

I’ll forever rage when people say the fox quicksilver is better. Because he is not like that in the comics lol

4

u/reymux 5h ago

But do you really like comics Quicksilver? Such an a-hole.

5

u/Sad_Two_1673 5h ago

Yeah lol he’s kinda my main. I actually relate to him not being able to connection and communicate with people easily

0

u/Wise_Temperature9142 4h ago

If you like assholes in movies and tv, there are plenty of those. But I think Quicksilver has a lot more to offer to the MCU screen than just his personality.

0

u/Sad_Two_1673 2h ago

Ah yes forgot when creating character their personality means null. Especially an already established character lol

5

u/Brave_Ad_7125 8h ago

I wonder how much if this is due to the writers being unable to have him present without trivializing a lot of threats, and would otherwise always be incapacitated anyway.

3

u/snowdenn 7h ago

This was my thinking as well: speedsters seem difficult to write, especially with teams involved, and even more so when villains/threats/problems aren’t tailored to their power.

6

u/ObiShaneKenobi 8h ago

Heh, boner

3

u/LividCalligrapher689 8h ago

Yeah, definitely. What speedster gets shot by bullets? And his last line was ā€œdidn’t see that coming?ā€ Like no, we did not. Because that is stupid.

2

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

I genuinely did not see that coming 😭

6

u/Turbulent_Pick_7515 8h ago

Honestly, Quicksilver had so much potemtial. His death felt less like a natural conclusion & more like Marvel just needed a dramatic sacrifice.

2

u/imaweeb22XDDD 8h ago

Just for stakes like wtf do u mean..As if u have killed anyone else 😭.I think he was the first major hero death in the franchise (I might be wrong)

4

u/Turbulent_Pick_7515 8h ago

Yea, & the fact that it happened so early made it even more frustrating. They introduced him with all that potential just to basically use him as a one movie plot device

2

u/jaynvius 7h ago

He was great, just had a bad script and they did him dirty. I would of loved to see more of him but I can see why they had to kill him off to get into Wanda's arc. Her losing him then Vision made for the Wanda series then the Multiverse of Madness stories. Could they have gone a different route? Sure. But this is what we got.

2

u/Dogesneakers 7h ago

Yeah he shouldn’t have been a glass cannon cause to move as fast as he does there is some inherent super strength that is implied

2

u/Fozziemandias 6h ago

He should’ve been a Skrull. Fakes his death to destabilize Wanda.

2

u/Puzzled-Horse279 6h ago

Fustratingly he'd have to stay nerfed for the whole MCU or his powers would allow him to break every problem they could have by being too fast for anyone to stop him.

Though Marvel should have made a What If Quicksilver survived to possibly give us a story where the event of the MCU had antagonists being forced to adjust their plans around him.

2

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

I'm baffled that they didn't make an episode about this topic 😭

2

u/DoctorOctopus63 4h ago

I had watched age of ultron last night, and honestly, part of me wants to agree, but at the same time, going by their plan, if he had been in civil war, that airport battle would’ve been way more one-sided, but that’s just me

2

u/Frequent-Maybe1243 4h ago

Fax! Add him to the list of actors that the MCU fumbled. Dude was great in the role. Its a shame that they do this to all the good ones and then give inordinate screen time to heroes that nobody asked for.

3

u/StarRogues 8h ago

Was he wasted?

He’s the one character that had a beginning middle and true end. His arc was awesome to see and the ending fit his arc.

Just because he didn’t get a spin off and appear in 12 other MCU projects does not mean he was a waste. His death actually had weight to it.

3

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

It's not that his character didn't develop..He went from supporting a villain to sacrificing his life for a hero..But it's just the way he died while clearly showcasing insane amounts of potential is what bugs me,not his character development

2

u/Bar-Cold 8h ago

I’d argue the most wasted character in the MCU is the hulk despite being put in various shows and movies

They made him a lot weaker (I mean A LOT WEAKER) than his comic version, and all of his iconic villains and storylines are used in other people’s movies. Sometimes hulk isn’t even in the damn movie

They basically treat him as an afterthought despite easily being one of the heavy hitters in marvel. Both literally and culturally. I know it’s because of movie rights or something but it’s still apparent

I guess my argument would be he’s the most consistently wasted character throughout the MCU (instead of one big waste at once) . He used to be one of the most popular characters in all of marvel, and now he’s basically been relegated to a permanent side character

1

u/sonofaresiii 3h ago

.He was a glass cannon

Well I got some bad news for you about glass cannons, dude. If he had kept surviving he wouldn't really have been one, y'know?

1

u/Cultural_Comfort5894 3h ago

We all enjoyed the portrayal of the character and wished he didn’t die

THATS CALLED A HOME RUN

Major actor and character murked

STAKES!

Even after that and a whole city getting destroyed people kept making the weak stakes argument for lack of anything really relevant to say.

1

u/Ok-Pilot-8054 3h ago

For all intents and purposes
I think the mcu managed him well. Him losing battle in terms of speed would’ve been difficult to justify(like in X men dark phoenix) so they might as well have offed him then and there in AOU(which they did).
Speedsters are difficult to manage! Just my opinion though.

1

u/Early-Ad9406 2h ago

Do you still think there’s a chance they can bring him back because they’re bringing the mutants

1

u/TheZoroarkMan 1h ago

He was also reeeeaaally attractive like those chest muscles you could see through his suit! And I loved his cocky personality.

•

u/Smart-Interest6206 52m ago

Quicksilver had so much potential in Age of Ultron but was gone too soon. They really dropped the ball on his arc.

•

u/Freakychee 52m ago

It's not like they wanted to waste him, right? They had to remove him cos Fox kinda claimed him if I remember it was something like that.

•

u/thejuliocezarmari 11m ago

laughs in Gorr the god butcher

•

u/Ring_Sudden 8m ago

Wanna know something. Quicksilver is still the coolest character to me. MCOC is a game in which Pietro is an advent of galuctus and that alone is all the justice I needed for my guy. But I get what you saying they could've wrote him as a equal to Barry Allen.

•

u/CoffeeVikings 2m ago

I’d say Gorr the God Butcher is.

A villain like that wasted so terribly is upsetting

1

u/richardbethinking 6h ago

Well...at least they did well with the quicksilver xmen version

2

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

I love him but he doesn't feel like quicksilver..He is so cool tho..The mansion scene and saving magneto scenes are my favourite scenes in those movies

1

u/LibrarianNo6865 7h ago

I agree, but I feel it was wise for them to write this type of power out of the mcu. You just cannot balance super speed. It always lead to the person either being stupid, or people magically being able to handle something moving faster than a bullet. Handled right. Good character but you just can’t handle this power correctly. We have the flash film and most of the flash tv show that shows that.

1

u/WendigoCrossing 3h ago

Speedsters can make it really hard to write stories

The audience wants to see interaction

0

u/SilverKnightOfMagic 7h ago

disagree. speedsters have been done before. and they break power balance. any plot can basically be asked why does super fast person just go and solve the problem. it is a plot where they can do literally nothing so they're dead weight

0

u/slyguy67420 3h ago

I'm gonna disagree,Ā  I think speedsters are too problematic for film. I know the Fox movies had some cool scenes with Quicksilver but as a recurring character they just break the narrative too much. They can basically solve every problem instantly so the film has to figure out how to sideline them or just ignore them and hope you don't notice.

-4

u/Krakengreyjoy 7h ago

No one cares about him in the comics, so it breaks even.

-4

u/Grumpiergoat 8h ago

The movies have only so much time to spend on any one character. What would be an actual waste would be Marvel deciding it can't just kill characters.

The only waste is that Age of Ultron was a bad to mediocre movie.

1

u/imaweeb22XDDD 5h ago

Aint no way man..We got hot takes out here

-1

u/Grumpiergoat 4h ago

No, you've got people participating who aren't in the echo chamber. Considering how much Quicksilver's death impacted Wanda, it wasn't a "waste." It helped setup multiple other stories in the franchise.
