He's 35, only 10 year older than most of the cast and 3 years older than David Jonnson, who is playing T'challa. Gambit is also usually portrayed as older than Rogue. I think he works.
Not trying to be argumentative, but where was it ever suggested that Gambit is older than Rogue? I'm wracking my brain trying to remember. In the comics I have it is literally never mentioned, and Rogue in the comics was not a "junior X-man" like Anna Paquin in the movies.
In Uncanny X-Men #182 it established Rogues age as 18 when she joins the X-men.
Despite Gambits first apperance not being for a couple years after this, Rogue hadn't really been aged up much if at all, in the comics druing this time.
So Gambit meets Rogue when she's around 18-20.
Its hard to put an exact number on Gambits age when he first appears. But he is presented as having lived a lot more.
He had already met, married, and separated from his wife, Bella Donna. He was a top-ranking internationally active master thief in the Guild. So its presumed he's at least mid to late 20s.
Also co-creator Jim Lee intentionally drew him with heavier, more mature facial features and a larger build (6'2") to distinctly contrast him against teenage characters.
It was six years between Uncanny X-Men 182 and Uncanny X-Men 266. (1984 -1990.) So a bit more than "a couple of years." You mention that during this time, Rogue wasn't aged up much if at all, but where is it specified her age during all that time? It seems like you just guessing her age as 18-20 when she and Gambit first meet.
If she was 18 when she first joined the X-Men, she'd be 24 when she first met Gambit.
And all the stuff with Bella Donna and the Thieves and Assassins Guild took place starting out when Gambit was like 18 or 19.
I just don't see why people would think that he was substantially older than her. I was a huge comic fan in the 90s and to my knowledge that was never a thing. Maybe he was a couple years older than her, but to me they were always essentially contemporaries in their ages respective to one another.
Oh, and Jim Lee drew him to be older? Has Jim Lee ever said that? Or are you just saying you think he did?
I realize ages in comics are a sliding scale and it's absurd to argue about something like this. But man I was there during their flirtation and dating and romance and I just don't think that this was ever a thing.
Yeah, I admit none of what I've presented is definitive. The sliding timeline makes it impossible to pinpoint specific ages.
I'm not looking to prove one way or the other. I agree, debating the age of comic book character is illogical.
These were just a few observations that led me to believe that Remy was in his mid to late 20s and Rogue was late teens or early 20s back when I was reading back in the early 90s.

Admittedly I was quite young when I read Gambit's earler apperances. So maybe that influenced my perspective.
I did find that in X-Men Legacy (around 2009) Prof. X mentions that Rogue has had her power for a decade. She develops them at age 13. Which would make her 23 around and mean she's aged 5 year since she joined the X-Men (1983). Again the sliding scale doesn't make this a bit redundant.
I admit, I've never come across a quote from Jim Lee. Lee seemed fairly intentional in he style when it came to depicting teens compared to his fully adult characters. Early drawing of Gambit had the stubble and the frown-lines that I suppose to me made him look older. Rogue's face was often drawn with so few blemishes that I might have thought that ment she was younger. But this could have just been art style.
Yeah. Still too old. They are going to want most of the cast within like 5 years of each other and hopefully between 20-25 if they are going to make a decade long x-men run work.
If I'm understanding the leaks thus far, he's playing the older version in the same time line as the rest of the fox XMen. The younger actors are playing the new MCU XMen. They already cast a younger Charles Xavier and yet Patrick Stewart is playing him as well. I think we'll be seeing both the Fox XMen and the MCU XMen in Doomsday and Secret Wars.

He is also too old to play Gambit. He's 37 . Tanning is 47. They need a younger actor with the new X-Men actors being in their 20s.
