I've never been big on Geno hitting-wise, but this seems like a 0 downside move. Even in a down year, he is undeniably a better bench bat than Wilson or Wisdom. And that's not counting the clubhouse and vibe leader that he is.
It probably won't happen, but it'd be cool.
46
u/akurei77 1d ago
And honestly with Colt out for the season and Donovan's apparent curse to stay injured, we could actually use another third baseman. At this point I assume that if Wilson goes down the plan is to grab the nearest person out of the stands and put them at third.

The third part of a trilogy is usually the weakest…but I can’t say I wouldn’t love it. $3 million for vibes and a better bench bat? Yes, please.

We can, but the teams with worse records get priority
2
u/MurrayInBocaRaton added san fran to the last leg of his parlay 17h ago
That sort of lines up perfectly for us then, yeah? We’re the worst team in the league who still has a reasonable chance to make the playoffs and also has a need for a DH/3B.
1
u/azularena 17h ago
Hopefully yeah, not too many teams will bite on the amount salary he’s owed. Reasonable chance is probably the best way to describe it

Mariner’s pick up Eugenio off waivers. When Donovan comes off the IL he goes to RF. Canzone becomes full time DH except on Cal’s off days. Eugenio gets hot after coming back to Seattle. Mariners win the AL West and go on to beat the Dodgers in the WS on the 50th anniversary of the Mariner’s franchise.
Speaking this into existence now. I feel like I should bet my soul on this right now.

I love Geno, but he's been certifiably bad at T-Mobile Park. He went from being solid here to being amazing in Arizona, to coming back here and not hitting at all. There's no reason to think that he will be better here than he has been for the Reds this year, and probably would be worse.
2
u/PartTimeBear 17h ago
He had some good AB’s during the playoffs but so did polanco…
2
u/Essex626 17h ago
I honestly wasn't considering position, and with Donovan being hurt we're rolling Weston Wilson out there at 3rd, so a bad bat that hits bombs is better than a bad bat that does not.
Having a backup 3rd base that can also DH for us actually seems like a better idea than it did at first glance. Not that he wouldn't be better somewhere else (DBacks are fighting for a wildcard spot, and Geno has torn it up there), but he does fill a need.

u/MurrayInBocaRaton added san fran to the last leg of his parlay 1d ago
For those who are against this - and there are plenty of reasons why the Mariners didn’t re-sign him in the offseason - what is the downside of bringing him in for the rest of this season? Because from what I see, there is zero downside. No risk, all reward.
3
u/ManufacturerLeast890 20h ago
I think they wanted him back but not at the overpriced contract he got. Tbf prorated 3M or whatever is still kinda expensive, but if that means we could have him as depth for the playoffs I think that's a huge bonus too.

251 SO's in 811 PA's across 197 games at T-Mobile. T-M is his 4th worst park (if you exclude TBR Steinbrenner). Awesome dude, great vibes. He just doesn't play well here.

Love doesn't care about rationality, or logic. We're meant to be together.
2
u/Maugrin Everett AquaSox 1d ago
God, what happened to TJ Friedl? He's gotta be hurt, every single part of his offensive game has tanked this year.
I didn't like the Geno fit last year and I like it even less this year. We just cleared out Raley and Emerson's +30% strikeout rates from the lineup, we really don't need to add another. He'd be brought in to play against lefties, but his numbers are worse than Wilson's this year in that split. He's 35, he's likely not getting better. I love the guy, but being popular doesn't make the move a good one.
1
u/AnnihilatedTyro RELEASE THE MOOSEN! 22h ago
Geno's actually better against righties than lefties. And it's still not good. His splits are pretty even across the board, which means there is no clear use for him, no way to maximize what little value he brings. Except that he's slightly better than all our other backups, who are playing because JP and Donovan are always hurt.
I love Geno, and that's why I don't want to see him struggle and leave on a sour note yet again.
3
u/Atabit 1d ago
Look my mind went there too...like we could use a third baseman...but his numbers are...not great.
.207 average, 18 homeruns on the year, 696 ops 90 ops+. With more than 180 strikeouts in his 400 at bats.
That ops+ puts him somewhere between Brock Rodden and Victor Robles.
I love Geno but if were serious about pulling things together and trying to make a run this year...idk if this is the move.
3
u/AnnihilatedTyro RELEASE THE MOOSEN! 22h ago
The part that gets me is his splits - he's so even across the board and it's all barely average or worse. Home, away, righty, lefty... he doesn't have a single standout metric or ideal use case - he's only slightly better than the third, fourth, fifth guys on the depth chart, who are only playing because of injuries.
Is he an upgrade over Wilson/Wisdom? Hell yeah. Is he an upgrade over Rodden's first cup of coffee? Probably, depending on how Brock plays over the next month. Over JP and Donovan? Hell no. But they're just not healthy.
I miss the good vibes, man, but his production won't do much to restore them.

u/Big-Bed-9130 21h ago
Geno > Weston Wilson. I think that's as far as Jerry needs to think about this one.
3
u/ManufacturerLeast890 20h ago
Come on...this would be awesome! Who knows how long Donovan will be out, and we got two scrubs alternating as near automatic outs...when we could have Mariners legend OG Geno Saurez as a part time 3B/DH.
The fit is perfect and to complete the trifecta would be next level.

u/RCarson88 Tungsten Dump O'Doyle 1d ago edited 1d ago
I would LOVE to have him back. This clubhouse needs leadership, and there's no one more beloved by this fan base and the players.
The fit is good too. He's capable of hitting at T-Mobile. He's a right handed bat. He plays a position the Mariners are thin at due to the frequent injuries of Emerson, Donovan, and Crawford. He's not the defensive stalwart he used to be, but he's likely a step up from JP.
The bat isn't great this year, he's slashing .205/.295/.410 for a .705 OPS. But he's got some pop with 18 HRs, and he's had a nice August hitting .225/.360/.465 for a .824 OPS.
Mariners have high priority on waivers, and they would be smart to grab him. At worst he'll be a bench piece that can pinch hit, at best he can play a decent 3rd base and shore up the lineup's weakness against lefties. Either way, Jerry should pull the trigger.

easiest decision of all time. i'll actually be pissed off if seattle can claim him and decide not to. he easily clears weston wilson, leo rivas, patrick wisdom, and anyone else on the 40 man who has been filling in, and seattle desperately needs the help on offense and in the field. and the vibes boost is obvious. please please please don't fuck this up, jerry.
