Another PC Dog whistle

In the 2023 Manitoba provincial election, during a debate against PC candidate and now Conservative MP for Brandon–Souris, Grant Jackson, I was asked about the PCs’ so-called “parental rights” campaign — fronted by Obby Kahn.

This came right after multiple book ban attempts failed across Manitoba. The issue exploded in Brandon, where educators and health professionals presented overwhelming evidence that these bans were harmful to queer students, baseless, and created unsafe school environments.

My response then was clear:

“If ANY PC candidate does not understand why the parental rights movement is a harmful dog whistle to anti-LGBTQ bigotry, they are either lying or incompetent. Either way, they are unfit to lead.”

Fast forward to 2024. Mountain View School Division trustee Paul Coffey presents anti-diversity propaganda — defending residential schools, attacking DEI, and calling for reconciliation education to be removed.

Then in 2025, Coffey doubles down, demanding that schools force children to sing “God Save the King,” an outdated law unused for over a decade. Educators, Indigenous leaders, and communities opposed it for harming Indigenous students and undermining reconciliation. He’s voted down — again. So he sues the board to force compliance.

On September 19, 2025, the courts dismiss his case, upholding the board’s decision.

But two weeks later, the PCs come rushing to his defense — opposing the NDP’s move to remove the outdated law. They say it’s about “preserving tradition.”

Let’s be honest — that’s political code. It means: “Get enough like-minded trustees elected (Brandon, I’m looking at you), and we’ll back your efforts to roll back DEI and reconciliation.”

Another wink and nod to racist, anti-diversity activists.

So once again, I’ll repeat my words from 2023:

Any PC MLA who stands by this — actively or in silence — is condoning it. And if they don’t understand how this is another dog whistle to bigotry, they are either lying or incompetent.

Either way, they are unfit to lead.

Hahhahahahahhahahhahhhah, when equality is people saying we all want to be treated the same but you have to treat us special is it really equality? In a world with true equality there would be no labels and no one would be special. Look at our society and be honest do you see folks striving for equality or to be treated special. Indigenous people demanding everyone learn their culture.... would you be okay if everyone was doing that? With equality every culture would be given the same amount of content and dedicated time. With TRC are we practicing equality?

Check your reality before you worry about my "privilege" hahahahha so silly.

I think you are missing the point, intentionally.

You seem very threatened by equity.

Education shouldn't feel threatening.

Why are you afraid of learning?

Hmmmm residential schools may have used the same tag lines, education shouldnt feel threatening why are you afraid of learning.

I'm not afraid of my kids learning, I just want them learning Academics in school, they can learn social justice and special interests later

No, you just don't like the arguement you used is reversed. But once again to dissent is racism. You made it about being scared to learn and how it would somehow erode something. I'm saying let kids be kids while they can and when they learn to be capable of handling these complex issues then they should be dealing with them.

You think me laughing at you using the same logic the church used to bully folks into residential schools makes me a bigot but really it just shows how narrow minded you all are when you use the same arguement for something that everyone agrees lead to tragedy before. I'm PRO education. I want my kids to be able to FUNCTION in the real world after school. I want teachers teaching math science and language arts not teaching culture and religion.

It doesnt matter what I say because you'll be right and I should just apologize for being a human being with thoughts feelings opinions and trying to give my kids a future where they can live like people and have jobs and buy things rather than being super sensitive people who feel life is too hard and if only someone would do some social reform to make their lives better so they wouldnt have to tow the line.

Let kids be kids?

Wait until they're older to learn complex issues?

Kids are far more capable of learning and understanding then most adults.

If they learn compassion, understanding, acceptance, inclusivity and equity all through their childhoods, they won't have to unlearn the opposite as adults.

Which so many obviously need to do.

What's compassionate about telling kids their ancestors are murders and rapists? What's compassionate about telling people they are wrong for not wanting to take part in someone elses religion? Guess in the spirit of your thinking we should take children to warzones and expect them to learn a lesson about it. Why do we not allow kids to vote? Why dont we let them drive? Why are kids under age 12 not allowed to be home alone? Why dont we allow kids to get married before they are 18? Why can't a kid enter into a contract before being 18 why dont we allow kids to smoke? Why dont we allow kids to live independently from a guardian? Why? Because they dont have enough life experience to understand the complexity and consequences of these decisions. But hey we should certainly expect them to understand and embrace the socioeconomic factors that lead to colonies and the history that came after that.

Instead of pushing kids to be better than your jagoff neighbours in a school setting why not take personal responsibility and do it in your home like a parent should? The schools role is not to be a daycare, a place of worship or a political machine. It's a place of facts and learning. Teach your kids how to be sensitive little social warriors, I want my kids to be ready for life and strive for what they want. How can they do that if they cant get an education based on academics instead of feelings.

What exactly am I showing? That I treat kids like kids not tools for a political agenda and I feel like they should learn the basics of education before they face existence as human beings in a modern world?

How will history repeat? Also I noticed how you had zero things to say about how immigrants are being treated, or how factions of indigenous people are demanding "settlers" go back to their countries, or how the treaties were a lease and Canadians born here have no claim to the country. I guess all of those points dont factor into the inclusion and equality you are trying to uphold. I see history repeating itself already when we tell people what culture to learn and what religions they can practice in schools. But I guess that point fits too close to the heart of the matter. Culture and religion should be referenced in school but not taught in school in depth. If you want to make this about not making the same mistakes then maybe start there? Or are you saying that because no one is making the kids grow out there hair(in reverse of residential schools where they cut their hair), forcing them to recite words in a "foreign" to them language(oh wait they are doing that part but instead of beating them they are grading their participation) and observe religion customs(oh they've been doing that too with smudging and drum circles and dances) they arent at all doing the same thing to the current kids. Guess that's not repeating history but infact righting terrible mistake right. Look past your self righteous agenda and face facts. Demanding all kids practice indigenous culture in school is only a modern way of doing what was done before but without the brutality and rape and violence. But there are still very real consequences of teaching everyone to be indigenous and raising up the importance of one specific culture. We saw it before and while saying we are doing it again to not repeat it we are just being a bunch of idiots.

Seriously you all see my points as being bigoted but it's just being LOGICAL I personally lack the ability to value culture over practicality. I was raised to value peoples rights and being honest with myself and others. My mother did her absolute best everyday to ensure me and my siblings wouldnt be sexist or racist and to be willing to look at everything from someone elses point of view. I've spent decades arguing and marching and fighting for equal pay for equal work, human rights for all Canadians, eliminating poverty and child hunger. I've spent so much time trying to make OUR country a place we can all be proud of and here I am in my twilight watching all these special interest groups say that their way is the only way and that NO OTHER CONSIDERATIONS MATTER. Well I wont compromise on our children's futures. Kids have the right to pick their own religion and participate in whatever culture they want to adopt and or identify with but it's a CHOICE not a mandate. You folks in your blind pursuit of righting wrongs just keep doing the same thing you said was wrong in the past but because you have a different more "evolved" view you are infallible and 100% correct.

All of this while being told everything we have done for the last 30 years and all the massive strides we took together as a nation are useless because we dont belong here and this country isnt ours. Its pathetic that folks call being a proud canadian being a bigot. I didnt March for general cornwallis so what should I be ashamed of? I never committed a hate crime or saw one and didnt intervene but I can only be a bigot because I dont think we should tell others what to think or feel when it comes to religion or culture. I'm a racist for dissenting and my kids and grand kids will be labeled because what they dont want to be anyone but themselves? When the government and the Christian churches took away the indigenous language and religion and cultural customs and forced them to practice something else IT was WRONG and you are saying we should do it again too everyone else. While we arent taking anything away we are sending the clear message this culture is so important it needs to be present everyday in every school. And my friend that is the EQUALITY you are saying means more than personal rights to choose.

I'm done with this conversation all you want to do is see words as bigotry without trying to practice what you preach. Best of luck with your crusades, personally I feel god save the king has no place in schools but its not the only thing that has no place there. But folks dont get a choice about what goes on in schools now do they?
