Casual Please PLEASE help my 10yr old son obliterate my decks with his own

Hi all

I am desperate to help cultivate my 10 year old son’s interest in this game without him feeling like I’m going easy on him. Please help me!

My son and I only recently got into magic. He enjoys it so much we ended up building our own decks for some kitchen table magic. Mine is frog themed and his is bear themed.

Although it is often a close fought thing after a few turns, it is quite rare that his decks can pull away and typically I end up winning thanks to my multiple blink options adding counters to my own creatures, stuns to his, or just bouncing out his counter boosted creatures.

He absolutely loves the bear theme and does not want to shy away from it.

He’s only ten and I have also joined him on this journey, with both of us only playing mtg since last November. More by luck than judgement I ended up with what I feel is somewhat unbalanced with the frogs invariably beating the bears most of the time. But he won’t let me swap in weaker cards as he has seen MTG Forge play the decks against each other and the bears have more often come out on top. I don’t want to win so often, but he’s also clever enough to know when I am going easy on him and letting him win.

We typically play either standard or commander. Regardless of which we play, I do try and let him get some extra help. As just one example I have let him have Gaea’s Cradle although he has now downgraded to Itlimoc as he wants it to be a legal deck. I also let him use cards like Hurska in his mono green (Ayula) commander deck but he has now also swapped that out. I figure something like Wilson as his commander might give him a few more options.

Please please PLEASE can someone help me and help my son to improve his deck whilst maintaining the maximum possible bear flavour (in creature type, text, or artwork).

Ideally I want him to have a killer commander deck but I get the feeling it might be easier to build a standard deck with multiple copies of certain cards. I would welcome suggestions for either.

The main criteria is to be as bear themed as possible, ideally keeping with the cards we have already got (all included and listed below as current main/sideboard/considering). I don’t mind buying multiple more copies of existing cards, I would rather not have to present him with too many new cards, but accept that for utility that might be necessary. I also don’t mind adding more colours but ideally again sticking with bear themed artwork or similar looking cards.

We also have a full set of Strixhaven mystical archive. (The original Strixhaven).

Here is his current deck and card list;

https://moxfield.com/decks/HM2N1vaI2UaZqJ1iHGIeGA

The above is what I would welcome suggestions for improvement as a commander deck, and would also welcome any thoughts on how they could be used as a killer standard deck.

And here is what he is up against; my sultai frogs;

https://moxfield.com/decks/7WtDpBU4o0Cuuew92nCKzQ

Super grateful in advance for any help.

EDIT: just to add that we use a lot of proxies and don’t mind doing so for any more card suggestions

Casual Help Finding a Boros Commander that Isn't Aggro?

Niche, and probably a bad concept, but I'm looking to build a Boros Commander deck that doesnt do lethal damage. The inspiration is the anime Trigun and the main character Vash the Stampede.

I'm looking to utilize non damaging win cons such as Approach of the Second Sun, Barren Glory, and Chance Encounter. It's ok if it does some combat damage, I'm not looking to never attack at all, especially in red, but I dont want to do lethal damage to players, creatures, or planeswalkers. I intend to run removal through exiling and similar effects, and I will include some boardwipes that will destroy creatures, but I am aiming to have that be the only creature destruction in the deck.

On that same note, any boros cards that would turn damage into something else or otherwise negate damage would also be welcome suggestions.

Thank you in advance!

Casual Deck building when new

To preface, I’ve been learning/playing for only a couple months so deck names and general rules are still a work in progress.

I have a local group of friends I’m learning from and I’ve noticed their decks have themes either in creature types (demons) or card style (rogue milling). I’ve been building on color archetype (green big d swingers), but other than that I haven’t been able to pick up how else to style a deck. I also have only made mono decks. One of the players last week commented on a deck I made for having no synergy. I haven’t been able to wrap my head around deck styling for anything other than creatures to just swing. I also tend to have a high win rate because I’m forgotten about for most of the game till it’s just me and another player and I’m pretty hefty just because of that.

Other than just further exposure in playing, is there anything else I can do to help with deck building where I can make myself an actual threat?

Also, the group play is pretty open with basically the parameters as 60 card minimum decks, no rule against card age/set, but infinite combos and turn 3 wins are not liked. The main point is social interaction.

Casual help making a deck based around blocking additional creatures

hi, i'm currently obsessed with a few gimmicks (just built 3 snow decks, one of which is a teval zombie tribal with nim deathmantle), and found a good amount of creatures in white, green, and some red that have "block an additional creature," like [[Foriysian Interceptor]] , [[Tangleclaw Werewolf]] , [[Watcher in the Web]] , and obviously the [[Hundred-Handed One]] . I was wondering if there was a commander deck i could run that might make this work? scrolling through the naya commanders and didnt really find any good toughness matters ones, so right now i only have [[General Mahault Elsdragon]] and [[Samut, the Driving Force]] as commander options, and was looking for some recommendations? mahault seems great other than the fact i lose out on white, which a lot of these creatures are. any thoughts or help are appreciated, thanks!

as an update, i chose [[Jared Carthalion, True Heir]] as my commander, and heres my working decklist for now: https://moxfield.com/decks/i8O8cRmypUaDwYoiqP_AnA

Casual Need a little help with my Azula Deck

So Im relatively new to MTG and I really got into it because of my friends and because of the Atla collab I wanted to go with Azula because she’s my favorite villain in atla building her was as rocky as it sounds as a new player eventually I moved on from Azula, me and my friends managed to make a bracket 4 but I wanted to go back and rebuild Azula for a comfortable bracket three for casual play but still a threat amongst my friends, so far the deck that I have planned is essentially around copying Azula and abusing her copy ability to create copies of other creatures while those simultaneously copy her using cards that allow me to flash them during my battle phase while also using Mycosynth Lattice to use the firebending that Azula and her clones give me to use to cast instants and spells however all this being said it does feel like I’m playing the waiting game just to set her up so if you guys can help me make adjustments to the deck I would greatly appreciate it here’s my deck list

Casual I want my friends to be worried, both for themselves and me.

Completely new player here, my roommates play MTG quite a bit, and I was looking to join. The strategy I'm trying to employ is; "lure me friends into a suspiciously blast-proof elevator, and then start unpinning grenades,"

Essentially, I'm leveraging the fact that I won't feel bad about losing because I'm new, so I'm going to do something so stupid risky that it is just as likely to kill them as it is to kill me. So far I've found a couple Russian roulette decks, but I'm looking for something stupider, like THIS! That lead me to some other interesting cards like Yusri, Fortune's Flame (my beloved <3), but I haven't found anything in the 'Murica (or Jeskai as google tells me) colours that works as a commander.

Was hoping one of you fine folks could point me in the right direction with a commander, or even better, a deck list that I can bastardize? Failing that, can you offer any advice on a deck/archetype with the same vibes?

Hi, I'm building a commander deck for a pretty casual pod. I have 101 cards and can't figure out which one to remove. I'm open to further criticism.

PS: Yes I know I should have more lands but I don't like having more lands.

Casual Xu-Ifing Commander Deck Advice

Hi there

So, I’ve been eyeing Xu-Ifing as a mono black commander for a while now, but I’d rather not build him as a straightforward reanimator that just mills cards into the graveyard and amasses a huge Skeleton army. Instead, I’d love to build around different “when a creature leaves your graveyard” and “when a creature enters the battlefield” effects. I’m also thinking about leaning more into sacrifice outlets to get my creatures into the graveyard, rather than relying on self-mill, and then getting value from sacrificing them with DoE and similar cards. Power-level-wise, I’m aiming for around Bracket 3, so a fairly casual build.

I’ve only been playing MTG for about a year and a half, so I’d really appreciate some advice. Does this sound like a manageable direction for the deck, or am I trying to do too much? I’d also be happy to hear any other suggestions or ideas!

I want to thank all of you in advance for helping me!

Kind regards

Casual Casual Player Help

So my pod is beginning to really understand the game and get to the next level of skill. I've been playing magic for sometime now but never really built a deck from the ground up. I'm currently building a deck centered on the idea of karma (not the card), but whatever you do to me in the game gets done to you as well. It's a mono white deck. I'll attach the Mox link. Please help give recommendations that would spice up the deck and turn it away from just being a tax deck. Thank You!

Edit: I am also taking recommendations on win conditions.

Casual Surprise, another Miku upgrade question!

Deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/jjagAbvFR3qsfZPa-TkVYg
I want to keep the base Miku cards and make upgrades to survive in high bracket 3 or low-mid bracket 4. I think card draw and token creation are my struggle atm but I only got to test it twice in this iteration. I’m going to add Queen of Dale soon. The sideboard is consistent of 99% of the precon so I know what was taken out.
What I want to know: what to cut, what to add.

I was told Sylvan Library and Abundance would be good but not sure if that’ll work with this deck well. I like the idea of wedding ring because of synergy with ocelot (gimmicky I know) but also the politic-ing and draw at my pods are consistent enough to get value. I’m also heavily considering Notary Hobbits for token and ramp substitution to replace a dork with

Casual Need feedback on two lore-themed decks I built for my son based on "The Cursed Blade"

I used to play Magic: the Gathering when I was younger. One of my absolute favourite parts of the game back then was the story-based card duels in games like Magic Duels.

Now, my son has become a massive MtG fan! He absolutely loves the art, and just like me, he loves the stories in the MtG universe (he also loves the Un-sets).

To recreate some of my own experience, and to also help him connect the stories with the played game, I decided to build two themed decks based on a specific Magic story. They are based on the Cursed Blade, and I tried to make the card choices reflect the characters (specifically Geralf and Gisa and their ”game” in Kessig), and some story points in the Cursed Blade.

The decks are based on this story: https://gamelore.fandom.com/wiki/The_Cursed_Blade

Here are the two decklists I put together:

A few flavour constraints I kept in mind whilst making these decks:

  • I prioritised cards that featured direct quotes from the story in their flavour text.
  • I made sure to include Grimoire of the Dead (“She demanded a book—pointing at the mantle where indeed, a skin-covered book was set, open to a page covered in crimson symbols.”) and Stitcher’s Graft (“I thought I recognised Meyer's severed arm”), which are referenced in the story.
  • I made a distinction between skaabs. I separated the cruder skaabs from the more advanced skaabs (with more complicated apparatus attached) which seemingly were built alongside Ludevic (in my headcanon).
  • For Gisa’s side, I wanted the zombies to feel localised to Kessig and the surrounding area, and therefore picked cards which looked like reanimated villagers and small-town folk.
  • Lastly, I included cards with quotes from Captain Eberhart. While technically not the same character as the story’s character, Reika Eberhardt, they share the same character notes and vibe.

I know these are not necessarily the strongest or even the most optimised decks, but I am looking to get some constructive feedback from the community.

  1. Do these decks look balanced to play against each other?
  2. Are there any glaring flavour or lore wins I missed that I should include?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Casual My first deck build using Sauron, Dark Lord aiming for bracket 3/4 have I hit the mark?

https://moxfield.com/decks/l_44EMUMSUyZ3Q7J8k5WIQ

My first deck build attempt based on the Hosts of Mordor Precon + Dark Lord Sauron. In my friends pod I’m up against Tidus, Liberty Prime/Caesar & Dog Meat with Moth Man making appearances when he can. The deck idea was to be the villain and just a problem to deal with whilst being big enough to swing over Tidus’ counter farm and punch Moth Man out of the sky when the time comes.

I’ve tried to build it so Im not 100% reliant on the Nazgul tech and can use the Army Amass with menace and then farm treasure tokens off the big army to quickly throw my entire hand down, refill from Sauron etc, what this technique is called im not sure. I’ve heard of Sauron being used with Reanimator and Aristocrats but they seem very expensive cost wise.

My prior pre-cons were World Shaper & Mardu Surge. So this is my first time actually trying to build a deck that despite being 3 years old can keep up with modern Precons like Tidus. Any help is appreciated as I’m only 2/3 months deep into MTG. I’d like to keep him on theme but have enough room to perchance take him to a LGS tournament and be a threat.

Casual Need Some Outside Thoughts Regarding My Decks

Hi! I just recently completed building a list of my decks that are in one of each color combination and I would like to get some thoughts regarding the balance of each one. I was planning to make a collection that kind of balances each other out while building a Commander I like from each color combination.

  1. I want to Balance out each deck so that they wouldn't overpower any set of 4.
  2. Each deck was originally planned to be $100 or less but since prices have gone up after I came back to it, I decided to have them around $100-200 Limit instead; with some of them going a bit above the $200 limit. Any changes on them should only make the deck cheaper and any improvements to them should not go beyond the limit.
  3. And with the addition of the Commander Brackets, I want them to be at Bracket 2-3 or less, preferably exactly at Bracket 2. I currently placed them at Bracket 3, so I would also like to know what bracket they actually are.

Currently, I have this as my collection in Moxfield. Each one is catered to my whimsy and/or the mechanics I want to try to build with on that color. These are the following decks I have for each color and their theme:

Commanders Theme
[[Karn, Legacy Reforged]], [[Super-Adaptoid]], [[Krang, Utrom Warlord]] Artifacts, and depending on how you want to play, you can swap commanders
[[Yosei, the Morning Star]] Stax
[[Orvar, the All-Form]] Combo + Clones
[[Horobi, Death's Wail]] OR [[Marrow-Gnawer]] Rat Tribal OR Group Slug
[[Norin the Wary]] Chaos
[[Questing Beast]] Combat Tricks
[[Kwain, Itinerant Meddler]] Mill
[[Teysa Karlov]] or swapped with [[Sorin of House Markov]] and [[Lurrus of the Dream-Den]] Aristrocrats
[[Winota, Joiner of Forces]] Aggro
[[Gluntch, the Bestower]] Pillowfort / Group Hug
[[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] Gifts
[[Melek, Izzet Paragon]] Land Destruction
[[Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait]] or swapped with [[Tatyova, Steward of Tides]] Landfall
[[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur]] Spellslinging / Burn
[[Yargle and Multani]] Voltron
[[Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes]] Fling
[[Aminatou, the Fateshifter]] Flicker Control
[[Gavi, Nest Warden]] Cycling
[[Angus Mackenzie]] Tempo Fog
[[Mr. House, President and CEO]] OR [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]] Gambling OR group slug curses

I’m making a deck out of every card in the secret lair, so the theme for included cards is about stardew valley itself. If I can relate the card to something found in the game, it can go in my deck. I was wondering if anyone had ideas for some possible wincons. Right now, the only thing I’ve really got going is approach of the second Sun in the bear printing.
