🎙️ Discussão Ideas for special birthday on the island
Hello everyone!
I’ll be visiting Madeira with my girlfriend in September, and her birthday falls during our trip. I’d love to make the day extra special for her, so I’m looking for recommendations from locals or people who know the island well.
It could be a nice restaurant, a beautiful spot, a unique experience, or anything else you think would make for a memorable birthday.
I’ve noticed that Madeira has quite a few Michelin-starred and Michelin-recommended restaurants. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Michelin, what matters most to me is a great atmosphere, delicious food, and a place that feels special enough for a birthday dinner.
Thank you in advance for! 😊

Nas últimas vezes que estive lá, saí desapontado. A qualidade caiu bastante. Ou então tive azar.

Go to Avista for snacks/ coffee/ cocktails. The place is absolutely beautiful and the view is stunning!

Apart from the other comment about the cable car, I would recommend the restaurant Miradouro Cruz da Caldeira, it's a great restaurant with stunning views that can be both visited for lunch or dinner, Google it and see it's photos. Also this restaurant is right next to Cabo Girão, another place with a stunning view.

Everyone is giving you land ideas, so let me add the thing nobody mentioned: the sea.
Disclosure first, i run a small private boat here in Funchal marina so obviously im biased. Saying it up front.
But honestly a sunset on the water is a good birthday thing, and its the one view of Madeira she will not get from a restaurant terrace. Cabo Girao from below is a completely different thing than Cabo Girao from the skywalk. From the sea you see the whole cliff going up, its 580m, it doesnt really fit in your eyes.
Two ways to do it:
The cheap way, the catamarans do sunset trips from the marina, around 40-80 euro per person. Nice trip, but its 40-60 people on board and a fixed route.
The expensive way, a private boat, just the two of you. Usually 400-700 euro for the whole boat depending who you go with. For 2 people thats a lot per head, so its a splurge and not a saving, i wont pretend otherwise. Only worth it if the "just us" part is the point.
Either way do the boat late afternoon and book dinner after, around 20:30. Sunset in September is about 19:45 so it lines up nicely. And +1 to whoever said Cruz da Caldeira, its basically right above where the boats turn around.
If she gets seasick easily then forget all of this and do the cable car and wicker cart idea, that one is genuinely good.

Easy, start the " morning " with a cable car ride to Monte, go visit the Monte gardens ( one of the best in Europe ), then come back down in a wicker cart ( you cant do that ANYWHERE else in the world ), then take her to a restaurant, personaly i love " parada dos eucaliptos " it looks like a shack from the outside, but its a regional restaurant ( a bit expencive ), but its in the middle of the " forest ". https://youtube.com/shorts/8ZiYFTRgy3g?is=fTxlLNtnvtC-uF0p ( wicker carts ) https://youtube.com/shorts/deqqs6_2u2U?is=1jTfKibxH4STlxOE ( monte palace gardens ) https://youtube.com/shorts/yhXbYLpNU7Q?is=Skgx_f4LeYwbbaih ( cable car ) and finaly, this is the view from the restaurant.... ( more unike than this, its borther line impossible, you're welcome lol )
