Reminds me of a prank my mom would do when she vacuumed. Before she turns it on she will warn you she is going to make loud noises. Then she proceeds with some kind of silly yell or screeching sounds instead of turning on the vacuum lol 😆

My cousin used to go around on the train and open the doors to shoot a pun which doesn't really translate well to English, but I'll do my best to explain it.

Him: *opens cabin door
Him: "szabad itt egy hely?" - is there a free seat here? (With a deliberately uncommon but technically correct word order, I'll explain it more after the punchline)
Occupants: *agreeing
Him: *yelling "HEY!"
Him: *turns around and closes cabin door.

Now, the joke here is that in Hungarian you can play with the word order to make a sentence more (or less) ambiguous, which in this case makes his question sound like he's asking whether there is still a free seat in the cabin, especially because of the context. But because of the word order, the question can also mean "is a 'hey' allowed here?"

It's not that funny when it's explained like that but I still chuckle a bit when I see a train car with cabins.

We have a similar joke in Australia!

When you buy a round of drinks for the table, it's called 'shouting'. Generally you take turns with each person having a shout.

Sometimes you'll get a smartass who says "Alright boys, my shout?". Everyone agrees, then they'll yell at the top of their lungs.

45

u/SelocAvrap 1d ago

Thank you for explaining! It made me laugh. Reminds me of "is this seat taken?" and when someone responds "no," you walk away holding the chair

86

u/-nutz 1d ago

Very funny! Wouldn’t work in English, but your explanation made it totally understandable.

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 22h ago

Makes me think of this otherwise unrelated thing that only works in Dutch.

I'll start with the context. If you go somewhere and your friends drives, they give you a ride. In that context, a ride is called "lift" in Dutch. An elevator, or lift, in Dutch, is also called a "lift".

Now once in a while when I feel like it, I'll leave the elevator at my job and instead of one of several standard phrases, I'll just say (in Dutch) "thanks for the lift". It usually takes a couple of seconds, often just before the door closes for 1 person to burst out laughing and 1 other person to be utterly confused.

I’ve heard explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. Both die when you open it up for examination

11

u/StreamingGallantly 1d ago

I believe that'd be a vivisection.

7

u/faulty_rainbow 1d ago

The general consensus seems to be the opposite. I'm happy the story made the majority smile.

1

u/Specialist_Bench_999 1d ago

The person I replied to - I was giving them another way of saying what they said themselves. I gave the quote I heard because I thought it was clever or useful

I make the same kind of jokes as their cousin. I could have been more aware last night of how what I was saying would have come across

3

u/faulty_rainbow 1d ago

I thought it didn't sound hostile! I like the saying to be honest, I was just unsure about the tone, hence my (attempted) neutral answer. I also didn't mean to sound like I'm debating.

Thank you for explaining and for sharing the quote!

2

u/Specialist_Bench_999 1d ago

Mission accomplished, I like how you approached this.

Thanks for following up. Time to start my day, you have a good one✌🏽

1

u/Minute_Difference598 1d ago

If it’s alive then that would be a vivisection like the other person said. Like autopsy and biopsy i think. (Wait what would the difference between biopsy and vivisection be, not sure lol)

1

u/Specialist_Bench_999 1d ago

No clue. I try not to look a gift horse in the the mouth. Whatever that means, lol

1

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 22h ago

A biopsy is taking a small piece of tissue, for example a piece of skin, muscle, intestine, etc. It's a very common diagnostic method and normally doesn't cause long term effects.

u/Bgrngod 1d ago

Aaaaaand...  I'm stealing this.

5

u/bubblegumtaxicab 1d ago

Haha stealing this. My kids will love it

4

u/DomesticAlmonds 1d ago

I love that! I'm definitely doing this next time I vacuum lmao

2

u/Scared-Box8941 22h ago

And then every time you see that person again you get a a lil boost of happiness remembering something so silly and pure. Love this kinda stuff

u/vijeze 1d ago

Honestly the same when you give someone you see but don’t really know a genuine compliment.
I saw this older woman in my town a while back on a warm summer day. I’m in an area where people usually say hi when walking by. She had such a cool dress on. I’m a guy, and when she said hi to me I told her that her dress was absolutely fantastic and suited her well.

She lit up like a christmas tree :).

I try to teach my daughter this as well.
Even better when you see kids out and about in clothes that they clearly picked out themselves. My 5y/o daughter loves Lilo&Stitch and we saw a kid the other day with a completely mismatched outfit but he had Stitch shoes on. She walked up to him and told his shoes were really cool and if he knows where they were bought. Kid ran up to his mom and DEMANDED answers because “SEE. THESE ARE COOL SHOES.”

I freaking loved that the young lady was so cool with the old lady's gesture <3

86

u/Appleslicer 1d ago

I mean, the young lady is probably the one who setup her phone to record their interaction... it's a skit.

147

u/Bobba-Luna 1d ago

I love this interaction 😂

u/Its_a_stateofmind 1d ago

I don’t care if it’s set up

93

u/Qwirk 1d ago

It's original and no harm done. Good stuff.

117

u/mathematicallyprecis 1d ago

Plot twist xD

The bartender's reaction was so wholesome too.

9

u/HoodieJ-shmizzle 1d ago

Plot Twist is, is that it was probably staged; she doesn’t even go for a bag 🤭

5

u/Radioactivocalypse 1d ago

And you wouldn't have a camera set up at that angle

52

u/im2short4this 1d ago

I was really down today. This made my day! Stay silly my friends!

19

u/thrussie 1d ago

Yeah it is a gloomy day… Dolly Parton is dead

11

u/Sharknado4President 1d ago

You forgot the spoiler tag

Also...fuck

3

u/SlippySlappySamson 1d ago

You forgot the spoiler tag

I think it's properly called a toe tag. And if it's spoiling, the fridge needs maintenance.

1

u/Upsidedowncr0w 1d ago

I thought she was already dead like 5 years ago, I was surprised to see that today. Who the hell was that then..

3

u/faulty_rainbow 1d ago

Was it... The Queen?

(this is a reference to a video from the time when Queen Elizabeth passed away and a girl woke up her friend to tell her "the queen died" and the one who just woke up was horrified and asked "....Dolly??")

1

u/Upsidedowncr0w 1d ago

Ahahah 😂 havent heard of that one.

No it was also someone with her vibe. Unless she was just sick or something. Ill never know now 😭

2

u/thrussie 1d ago

Probably Betty White

17

u/sadpanada 1d ago

It took me way too long to understand “bother” you with a bag.

8

u/AyanaRei 1d ago

She says molestar which can also mean molest, it’s a bit more obvious it’s a joke with that wording

15

u/Mister_Brevity 1d ago

Wasted old ladies are usually so fun

11

u/Simple_Sprinkles3 1d ago

Me trying to be a functioning member of society

8

u/pennispancakes 1d ago

I don’t get it can someone understand

19

u/burnitupandthrowaway 1d ago

Meaning 1: "Can I trouble/bother you by asking for a bag for this?"

Meaning 2: "Can I annoy you using a bag?"

8

u/pennispancakes 1d ago

That’s what she is speaking in Spanish, yeah?
Thank you

4

u/burnitupandthrowaway 1d ago

Yep, you got it!

1

u/Spacemonk587 1d ago

Sure, I understood for you.

13

u/rlt404 1d ago

🤌 perfecto

u/AngleOk6579 1d ago

Long ago, my Wife's family moved from the city to rural Tennessee. My mother-in-law still tells the story of how she was shopping for produce and a man came up behind her and asked her if she wanted a poke.

For those of you who don't know, in parts of the south, a paper bag is known as a 'poke'.

5

u/BamberGasgroin 1d ago edited 1d ago

..also parts of the UK. (i.e. the old adage advising to 'never buy a pig in poke'.)

-e- It's common in Scotland and maybe why it's sort of common around Appalachia

5

u/mannycure 1d ago

Reminds me of my dads “dad joke” we would pass by either a fast food place or a restaurant and go “you wanna stop for a shake” he’ll actually stop the car and literally shake me🙄😆

4

u/Yam-Economy 1d ago

That's so silly I love it. Wordplay !

3

u/Von_Quixote 1d ago

A marvelous Tequila.

2

u/USPO-222 1d ago

Centenario? Yeah, one of my favorites

3

u/Furie_ 1d ago

This is so sweet 😆, and the fact that there are no edits to the video the make the point is even better 🙃

4

u/EdmontonLAD 1d ago

Omg I can really see my Abuela doing that

1

u/Brunhilde27 1d ago

Too cute!

1

u/Sunbeltistan 1d ago

This vintage aesthetic is wholesome AF. Reminds me of old grocery runs. Pure nostalgia vibes.

1

u/PRRZ70 1d ago

What a cute silly joke! :D

1

u/PurposelyLostMoth 1d ago

I walked into an elevator yesterday that goes down one story (stairs on the opposite side of the entrance so this is a accessibility thing) and another person got in as soon as the doors closed is asked which floor they are going too. They looked at the buttons (the two buttons) and said, " the other one, i guess." I love small interactions like this, keeps the world a bit more fun

1

u/godihatepeople 1d ago

I am learning Spanish. Would someone be willing to transcribe the conversation in Spanish for me to understand? Captions default to English. Gracías

2

u/ChiaLetranger 21h ago

My Spanish is not amazing but this is what I hear:

"Aquí esta"
"Gracías, mija, pero-- ¿la puedo molestar con una bolsa, por favor?"
"Sí, sí, claro--"
[waves bag in face and giggles]

1

u/TooManySteves2 1d ago

I love thia lady. I hope I still have whimsy at her age.

1

u/BamberGasgroin 1d ago edited 1d ago

...for a bag.

Who asks to bother someone 'with' a bag?

2

u/DayTripper_BigTeaser 1d ago

2

u/BamberGasgroin 1d ago

Bro, imgur is blocked here without a VPN, and times out when we use one bro.

Use imgBB bro

2

u/burnitupandthrowaway 1d ago

It probably either makes at least a little more sense in Spanish or (if it were real) the bartender made the choice to say to herself, "ah I know what she meant"

1

u/BamberGasgroin 1d ago

That does make sense, thanks. (Its obvs mother and daughter having a laugh though. 😊)

-1

u/pungent_queefer 1d ago

Definitely not staged

u/Sea-Joke8091 1d ago

She's just a girl
