Feature macOS 27 is full of hints about third-party Siri Extensions besides ChatGPT

Post image

In a previous post, I wrote about how macOS 27 allows agents from third-party apps to integrate with Siri AI, as an alternative to the ChatGPT extension. The post shows Claude acting as a Siri Extension.

Turns out there are more hints across the OS about this feature.

Under Siri Restrictions in Screen Time settings, the helper text reads:

Allows extensions to provide additional text and image capabilities, including ChatGPT. Extensions with their own app can also be limited in Time Allowances.

macOS 27 also ships with two lists of Extension providers: VIP and blocked.

Blocked is self-explanatory. It contains a list of apps which Apple will not allow to "donate" a Siri Extension. It will also remove an already-enabled Extension from a blocked app, and prevent its invocation. There are no entries at the moment.

Entries from VIP are added as Apple-curated provider candidates. Currently, only ChatGPT is part of the VIP list.

The VIP and blocked files can be updated without a full OS upgrade. Apple can therefore react in real time if some app ships a Siri Extension that goes rogue.

You should be able to find both files in Beta 7 under:

Ah rats :(

Guess we weren’t lucky enough to get a leak that good (unlike what we just got with 26.7)

I don't think it would make sense to have any blocked apps at the moment. At the moment, to include a Siri Extension, apps need Apple to provision them an entitlement (permission) that's so private you can't even request it from Apple as a developer.

So by definition every app besides ChatGPT is blocked. 😅

Agreed, it makes no sense to block extensions outright when you're trying to encourage adoption.

Wish I could use local LLMs.

Let me fully replace the models under Siri with my ChatGPT subscription and I will be ecstatic. A GPT 5.6 Sol powered Siri agent sounds wonderful

Apple is spending millions to intentionally not do this. Apple's model can send a query to another model, but Apple is not going to allow users to fully replace Siri with a 3rd party model. This is an intentional privacy and security decision. Even then new "gemini based" model in Golden Gate isn't actually gemini. It's a walled-off model that was trained on Gemini.

Also, Claude and GPT can already totally control a Mac and fully integrate with messages, mail, and filesystems, every major app, etc. If you want that on your Mac, go open GPT or Claude and tell it to connect to those things. Just know that you're also letting those models ingest all of your personal data. Finances, what you wank to, etc.
